The Battle of the Bulge - The First Eight Days (Hardcover): S.L.A. Marshall The Battle of the Bulge - The First Eight Days (Hardcover)
S.L.A. Marshall; Edited by Bob Carruthers
R872 Discovery Miles 8 720 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"Hold the Bastogne line at all costs." Order to Combat Command B, December 21st 1944 This is the fascinating account, as recorded from the US perspective, of the bitter fighting during the eight days and nights of encirclement at Bastogne. First published in the pages of the Infantry Journal in 1946, this contemporary account by S.L.A. Marshall was rescued from obscurity by the US Army's Center Of Military History. There are few better or more authoritative accounts of the struggle as seen through the eyes of the American soldiers who stood fast at Bastogne. Sent to rest and recuperate, the weary paratroopers and GIs found themselves in the middle of a siege while all hell let loose around them. This is the definitive overview of their conflict as recounted in the year following the battle. This masterful overview is essential reading for anyone with an interest in the Battle of the Bulge.

The 101st Airborne had orders to hold Bastogne, Belgium, as German forces moved in on the offensive during what became known as the Battle of the Bulge. Brigadier General McAuliffe's answer to German envoys requesting surrender was succinct: "Nuts " This is the story of a vital position held under difficult conditions and against tremendous odds.

An on-the-spot history of a fight in the Pacific during World War II, "Island Victory" was the first battle history written by then-Lieutenant Colonel S. L. A. Marshall, a veteran of World War I who would serve in Korea and Vietnam and become a brigadier general in the process. After the Seventh Infantry Division drove across Kwajalein Atoll in the first days of February 1944, successfully wresting control of the strategic southern tip from the Japanese, Marshall was charged with producing an accurate and comprehensive account of the fight. His solution: bring the front-line soldiers together at once and interview them as a group, tapping the collective memory of a platoon fresh from battle. In this book, readers get a rare, firsthand sense of all the emotions that soldiers in combat experience. Numerous maps and photographs help us visualize precisely what took place. A compelling work of military history, and the first book of its kind, "Island Victory" is itself an important chapter in the history of how military exploits are described and recorded.

S.L.A. "Slam" Marshall was a veteran of World War I and a combat historian during World War II. He startled the military and civilian world in 1947 by announcing that, in an average infantry company, no more than one in four soldiers actually fired their weapons while in contact with the enemy. His contention was based on interviews he conducted immediately after combat in both the European and Pacific theaters of World War II.

To remedy the gunfire imbalance he proposed changes to infantry training designed to ensure that American soldiers in future wars brought more fire upon the enemy. His studies during the Korean War showed that the ratio of fire and more than doubled since World War II.

Korea, December 1950. The temperature has plunged to 20-degrees below zero. Cold enough to crack rocket-launcher ammo wide open. But not cold enough to stop a massive Communist assault against U.S. forces. As the 8th Army retreats, the Marines dig in at Chosin Reservoir and are quickly cut off and surrounded. This is the riveting account of what happened next. The brilliant Marine attack that was to become a classic in military operations. The personal heroism, private ordeals, bitter fighting, and final victory. Told in the powerful words of a man who was there, it is a story you will never forget.
