This edited volume compares the internal dimension, politics and society in Kurdistan-Iraq and Palestine. In particular, it focuses on internal processes in Kurdistan-Iraq and Palestine (Palestinian Territory of the West Bank and Gaza Strip) in their specific shaping, development and transformation. The contributing authors analyze the transformation processes of the internal power structures, the economic basics, and the civil societies and provide an overview of the current political, economic and societal situation and challenges in both regions. The book presents the similarities and differences between both de facto states with regard to a set of guidelines: legitimacy, power relations, transformation of politics and society. It provides empirical explanations and contributes to a better understanding of both de facto states.

Kurz vor Ausbruch des Zweiten Weltkrieges lebten in der ehemaligen deutschen Ostprovinz Ostpreussen etwa 3000 Schweizer, deren Interessen durch das Schweizer Konsulat in Elbing wahrgenommen wurden. Fortschreitende Industrialisierung und die damit einhergehenden negativen Auswirkungen auf die Landwirtschaft sowie wirtschaftliche Krisen veranlassten im 19. Jahrhundert viele Schweizer, ihre Heimat zu verlassen, um sich im fernen Ausland - dazu zhlte mitunter auch Ostpreussen - eine neue Existenz aufzubauen. Als der Krieg Ende 1944 vorbergehend und schliesslich im Januar 1945 mit aller Brutalitt nach Ostpreussen kam, gerieten auch die dort noch immer ansssigen Schweizerbrger in den Strudel des Kriegsgeschehens. Anhand der Akten des Schweizerischen Bundesarchivs wird die damalige Haltung des Bundesrates, insbesondere des Eidgenssischen Politischen Departements, hinsichtlich der in Not geratenen Schweizer in den Jahren 1944 bis 1948 untersucht und ein Einblick in ein bisher wenig erforschtes Stck Schweizergeschichte gegeben.
