Zwischen Forschungs- und Gleichstellungspolitik gab es auf europaischer Ebene lange Zeit kaum nennenswerte Verbindungen. Mit der Akzeptanz des Gender Mainstreaming in der Europaischen Union wurde ein Prozess eingeleitet, dieses gleichstellungspolitische Konzept forschungspolitisch zu wenden. Gender Mainstreaming wurde bei der Vorbereitung und Umsetzung des Sechsten EU-Forschungsrahmenprogramms (2002 bis 2006) erstmals angewandt und diese Anfangsphase steht im Mittelpunkt des Buches.

Gender relations in post-socialist countries Even more than 20 years after turning away from socialism, Eastern European and Central Asian states are still characterized by the regime change in the fields of work, politics, and culture. What are the effects and implications that this change has produced for gender relations in post-socialist countries? And what does this mean for the situation of women and men living there today? In this context gender relations are especially interesting since gender equality was perceived as a political goal and, moreover, a given reality in socialism. The articles in this volume show the changes as well as the stability of gender relations and power structures during the transformation process and in post-socialist times. They shed light on topics like labour market policies, fertility, political representation of women or male artists concerned with gender issues covering the geographical space from Hungary and Poland over Bulgaria and Romania to Ukraine and Uzbekistan. Beyond that, some of the descriptions and analyses challenge understood certainties about how to create gender equality and about the women and men living in post-soviet regions today.

The Capability Approach founded by Armatya Sen and Martha Nussbaum offers a justicebased analytical framework for human development. The contributions to the present volume show how the Capability Approach can be applied productively in empirical analyses of the life situations of young people and the educationalinstitutions they attend in different parts of the world including Serbia, Kosovo, Kenya, India, Greece, and Germany. Moreover, the volume helps to extend the Capability Approach by relating it to different theoretical and methodological approaches such as the capability concept of Paul Ricoeur, critical materialism, critical discourse analysis, and biographical research. Thus, the volume delivers comprehensive insights into the social (in) justices to be found not only on the level of individual life paths but also in institutions and in educational policy while showing innovative ways of applying the Capability Approach in the social sciences.
