Readings in the Anthropocene brings together scholars from German Studies and beyond to interpret the German tradition of the last two hundred years from a perspective that is mindful of the challenge posed by the concept of the Anthropocene. This new age of man, unofficially pronounced in 2000, holds that humans are becoming a geological force in shaping the Earth's future. Among the biggest challenges facing our future are climate change, accelerated species loss, and a radical transformation of land use. What are the historical, philosophical, cultural, literary, and artistic responses to this new concept? The essays in this volume bring German culture to bear on what it means to live in the Anthropocene from a historical, ethical, and aesthetic perspective.

This volume is a response to a renewed interest in narrative form in contemporary literary studies, taking up the question of literary narratives and their encounters with modernism and postmodernism within the German-language milieu. Original essays written by scholars of German and Comparative Literature approach the issue of narrative form anew, analyzing the ways in which modernist and postmodernist German-language narratives frame and/or deconstruct historical narratives. Beginning with the German-language modernist author par excellence, Franz Kafka, the volume's essays explore the unique perspective on historical change offered by literature. The authors (Kafka, Kappacher, Goll, Schnitzler, Menasse, and Wolf, among others) and works interpreted in the essays included here span the period from before World War I to the post-Holocaust, post-Wall present. Individual essays focus on modernism, postmodernism, narrative theory, and autobiography.

Nahrung und soziale Zugeh rigkeit sind auch heute noch miteinander verbunden. Die Konnotation hat sich jedoch im Laufe der Jahrhunderte gewandelt. Das Individuum, eingebunden in die Gesellschaft, vermag ber Tabus, Verbote und Meidungen in seinem Essverhalten gesteuert zu werden. Den Bereich der Ern hrung durchzieht somit ein System aus Normen und Sanktionen. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, Mechanismen solcher Reglementierungen aufzuzeigen. Genetisch ver nderte Lebensmittel, Di ten und Fast-Food, um nur einige Beispiele zu nennen, sind Bereiche, an denen gezeigt wird, wie Tabus, Verbote und Meidungen unsere heutige Esskultur bestimmen. Die Ausarbeitung verfolgt prim r soziologisch-theoretisches Interesse, indem sie die oben genannte Grundthese anhand von ausgew hlten Beispielen aus der Fachliteratur zu verifizieren versucht.
