A modern Saint Francis, Sundar Singh (1889 1929) left the wealth of
his home at sixteen to live as a sadhu, or wandering holy man. His
beggar-like existence, his intense devotion, his mystical
encounters with Jesus, and his simple yet profound parables became
the stuff of legends. No one who met him including the thousands
who flocked to hear him during his visits to Europe, the Far East,
and the United States remained unaffected. Known in his lifetime as
India s most famous convert to Christianity, Sundar Singh would not
approve of that characterization. He loved Jesus and devoted his
life to knowing and following him, but he never accepted
Christianity s cultural conventions, even as he embraced its stark
original teachings. Wisdom of the Sadhu, a collection of anecdotes,
sayings, parables, and meditations, brings together the best of
Sundar Singh s teachings. Couched as they are in a distinctly
Indian idiom, they probe the essence of the Gospels with unusual
freshness and offer insights of great depth and value to every
serious seeker."
In this little book the author has put down a few meditations on
various aspects of our spiritual life, and deals with those
difficulties which every man of God will necessarily meet with as
he passes through the different stages of his spiritual life.

When the truths set forth in this book were revealed to me by the
Master they deeply affected my life, and some of them have been
used by me in my sermons and addresses in Europe, America, Africa,
Australia, and Asia. At the request of many friends I have now
gathered them together in this little book, and though it is
possible that there are defects in setting them forth, I am sure
that those who read them with prayer and an unprejudiced mind will
benefit from them as I have. Sundar Singh was born into a Sikh
family. His mother took him to sit at the feet of a sadhu while
also sending him to Ewing Christian High School. Upon her death
when he was fourteen he took out his anger on missionaries,
persecuted Christian converts, and ridiculed their faith. Sundar
resolved to kill himself but had a vision of Jesus and resolved to
follow Christ. He was then denounced by his father and his brother
attempted to poison him.
There is nothing so perfect in the world as to be quite above
objection and criticism. The very sun which gives us light and
warmth is not free from spots, yet notwithstanding these defects it
does not desist from its regular duty. It behooves us in like
manner to carry on to the best of our ability what has been
entrusted to us, and strive constantly to make our lives fruitful.

In Hinduism, a sadhu is an ascetic who has given up the goals of
modern life and instead is dedicated to achieving liberation
through meditation and contemplation of God. Sundar Singh is a
remarkable individual who was born into a Sikh family in India and,
as a teen, had an encounter with the risen Jesus which profoundly
changed his life. However, he saw Christianity brought to India by
foreigners who had little understanding of the local culture and
customs. Sundar Singh thus became a sadhu so that he could dedicate
his life to Christ and bringing the Gospel message of salvation to
his fellow men. At the Master's Feet is Singh's writing on
discipleship, salvation, eternity, and what it means to be a
follower of Christ. His work is truly inspirational to all those
who are seekers.
