A modern Saint Francis, Sundar Singh (1889 1929) left the wealth of his home at sixteen to live as a sadhu, or wandering holy man. His beggar-like existence, his intense devotion, his mystical encounters with Jesus, and his simple yet profound parables became the stuff of legends. No one who met him including the thousands who flocked to hear him during his visits to Europe, the Far East, and the United States remained unaffected. Known in his lifetime as India s most famous convert to Christianity, Sundar Singh would not approve of that characterization. He loved Jesus and devoted his life to knowing and following him, but he never accepted Christianity s cultural conventions, even as he embraced its stark original teachings. Sundar Singh was born into a Sikh family. His mother took him to sit at the feet of a sadhu while also sending him to Ewing Christian High School. Upon her death when he was fourteen he took out his anger on missionaries, persecuted Christian converts, and ridiculed their faith. Sundar resolved to kill himself but had a vision of Jesus and resolved to follow Christ. He was then denounced by his father and his brother attempted to poison him.

There is nothing so perfect in the world as to be quite above objection and criticism. The very sun which gives us light and warmth is not free from spots, yet notwithstanding these defects it does not desist from its regular duty. It behooves us in like manner to carry on to the best of our ability what has been entrusted to us, and strive constantly to make our lives fruitful. In Hinduism, a sadhu is an ascetic who has given up the goals of modern life and instead is dedicated to achieving liberation through meditation and contemplation of God.
