This anthology of anthologies contains H. H. Munro's excellent
short stories, derived from a total of six compilations which were
published over the course of twenty years. Containing all of his
best regarded and famous short tales, as well as a sizeable host of
hidden gems and lesser-known treasures, this gigantic compendium is
comprehensive and certain to satisfy any fan of the author. The
sensual, tantalising and distinctly moral nature of the stories
usually rail against the stifling conventions of society - in the
end, the natural world (and people acting naturally) tend to come
out on top. The recognisable style with which Saki tells his tales
make their endings, which are usually surprising and witty, a
keynote feature of every story. Saki's ingrained wit and the
casually biting nature of the topics he chooses often leads certain
characters and the things they represent to ridicule, usually to
the great satisfaction of the reader.
Saki's classic collection of short stories includes "The Toys of
Death," "The Wolves of Cernogratz," "The Phantom Luncheon," and
many more.

Saki was the pseudonym used by H.H. Munro (1870-1916), a British
author and journalist who is best remembered for his short stories,
which The Encyclopedia of Fantasy calls "witty, barbed and
epigramatic." He wandered between the fanciful and the horrific,
the urbane and the uncivilized with a grace that makes his work
memoriable to all who have read it. The Happy Cat: Beasts,
Super-Beasts, and Monsters is an expanded edition of his book of
stories involving animals, and it includes one of his finest works,
"Tobermory," in which a cat who had seen altogether too much
scandal gains the power of speech. Other memoriable tales include
"Laura," involving reincarnation and otters, and "The
Story-Teller," in which the overly moral are devoured by wolves!
Reginald in Russia and Other Sketches is a collection of short
works, written by Saki (H.H. Munro).
Of the many European territorial reconfigurations that followed the
wars of the early nineteenth century, the Ionian State remains
among the least understood. Xenocracy offers a much-needed account
of the region during its half-century as a Protectorate of Great
Britain—a period that embodied all of the contradictions of
British colonialism. A middle class of merchants, lawyers and state
officials embraced and promoted a liberal modernization project.
Yet despite the improvements experienced by many Ionians, the
deterioration of state finances led to divisions along class lines
and presented a significant threat to social stability. As author
Sakis Gekas shows, the ordeal engendered dependency upon and
ambivalence toward Western Europe, anticipating the
“neocolonial” condition with which the Greek nation struggles
even today.

Saki's Cats rounds up the tales about cats, big and small, by the
undisputed master of the short story. 'Tobermory', one of Saki's
most famous pieces, demonstrates the danger that would ensue from
granting cats the power of speech - animals have long lurked
unseen, eavesdropping, in the background. The tom in 'The
Philanthropist and the Happy Cat' is the only one to enjoy his
meal, as is the leopard in 'The Guests'. In 'The Penance' and 'Mrs
Packletide's Tiger', hunters who put cats in their sights are
humiliated and blackmailed. 'The Achievement of the Cat' considers
how cats have come to be served by the human race. In addition to
the short stories about cats, Saki's Cats also collects Saki's
juvenile letters to his sister Ethel about the tiger cub he adopted
while living in Burma. The feisty felines of these tales are the
only clear winners, and, with a characteristic smirk and dash of
his pen, it is Edwardian Society that Saki sends slinking off, tail
between its legs.
Saki: The Blind Spot and Other Stories of the Supernatural Hector
Hugh Munro is perhaps the most graceful spokesman for England's
"golden afternoon" - those slow and peaceful years prior to the
outbreak of World War I. The good wit of bad manners, elegantly
spiced with irony and deftly controlled malice, has made Saki
stories small, perfect gems of the English language. The Blind Spot
and Other Stories of the Supernatural contain all his short stories
about the supernatural.
