Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made
available for future generations to enjoy.
Patriotism has long been an important theme in world literature,
especially during the era of the so-called "nation-state." Millions
of people, motivated by patriotism, have served their countries in
many different ways, including in military service in which
millions have died. What is patriotism? How has it been defined,
embraced, and sometimes rejected? How are various attitudes toward
it reflected in literature? These are the kinds of questions this
volume will explore from deliberately diverse perspectives.
Othello has long been considered (along with Hamlet, King Lear, and
Macbeth) one of Shakespeare's four greatest works of tragedy.
Recently, however, Othello has taken on a special interest, partly
because it deals so intriguingly with such issues as gender, race,
and class --issues particularly engaging to so many readers,
critics, and playgoers. This volume explores Othello from numerous
points of view, paying special attention to such matters as
history, aesthetics, and various important productions, especially
on film.

important works and the influences behind their creation. Common
themes throughout the sisters' works are love, gender, class, and
the intersections of all three, and this volume explores these
topics and more, setting the work of the Bronte sisters into
various contexts, such as biographical, historical, social,

This volume discusses some of Tan's key themes: communication
across generations of a family when those generations have grown up
in different cultures, the immigrant experience, mother/daughter
relationships, the intersection of gender roles and an Asian or
Asian American experience, and depression and the artist, among
others. Amy Tan has called writing "an extreme privilege, but it's
also a gift. It's a gift to yourself and it's a gift of giving a
story to someone." It seems Amy Tan will always be most associated
with her highly successful debut novel, The Joy Luck Club. Yet she
has also published five other bestselling novels, two memoirs, two
children's books, and has participated in adapting her writing into
many other forms of media, including film, television, and opera.
This volume offers insights into the full range of her creative
work.
