Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made

Patriotism has long been an important theme in world literature,
especially during the era of the so-called "nation-state." Millions
of people, motivated by patriotism, have served their countries in
many different ways, including in military service in which
millions have died. What is patriotism? How has it been defined,
embraced, and sometimes rejected? How are various attitudes toward
it reflected in literature? These are the kinds of questions this
volume will explore from deliberately diverse perspectives.
Othello has long been considered (along with Hamlet, King Lear, and
Macbeth) one of Shakespeare's four greatest works of tragedy.
Recently, however, Othello has taken on a special interest, partly
because it deals so intriguingly with such issues as gender, race,
and class --issues particularly engaging to so many readers,
critics, and playgoers. This volume explores Othello from numerous
points of view, paying special attention to such matters as
history, aesthetics, and various important productions, especially
on film.

important works and the influences behind their creation. Common
themes throughout the sisters' works are love, gender, class, and
the intersections of all three, and this volume explores these

various contexts, such as biographical, historical, social,
cultural, and aesthetic.

This updated eight-volume set contains essays that cover the 20th
century's most important events. With its articles arranged in
chronological order, this new edition covers a wide variety of
events from national and world politics, wars, civil disturbances,
disasters, crimes, business, scientific and medical discoveries and
breakthroughs, and other fields. The set's new articles extend the
coverage through September 2001 and include stories such as the
massacre of the Nepalese royal family by its own crown prince; and
the terrorist attacks of September 11 2001 and their aftermath. The
top matter offers a summary description ofthe event and defines its
significance in a brief sentence. Following that description is a
list of the "what", "when", and "where", "who" of the

the articles not only serves as timeline but also casts light on
the social, political, and economic evolution of the world from a
collectopn of individual nations to a global community, in which
developments in one regions have repercussions inothers.

This volume discusses some of Tan's key themes: communication
across generations of a family when those generations have grown up
in different cultures, the immigrant experience, mother/daughter
relationships, the intersection of gender roles and an Asian or
Asian American experience, and depression and the artist, among
others. Amy Tan has called writing "an extreme privilege, but it's
also a gift. It's a gift to yourself and it's a gift of giving a
story to someone." It seems Amy Tan will always be most associated
with her highly successful debut novel, The Joy Luck Club. Yet she
has also published five other bestselling novels, two memoirs, two
children's books, and has participated in adapting her writing into
many other forms of media, including film, television, and opera.
This volume offers insights into the full range of her creative
work.

differences between books and movies, beyond the obvious. Essays

publication) and the film (year released, director, screenwriter
and actors). The body of the essay is divided into detailed
sections --Context, Film Analysis, and Significance --and all
signed essays end with Further Reading and Bibliography lists. Each
detailed essay is made all the more robust with images, including
movie posters, stills from the film, and photographs of actors and
directors at work. The back matter of the volume includes six
significant indexes: Print Works by Title, Print Works by Author,
Print Works by Date of First Publication, Films by Screenwriter,
Films by Director, and Films by Release Date. The expanded coverage
in this new volume will appeal to both book and film lovers alike,
