Sport in the City - Cultural Connections (Hardcover): Michael P. Sam, John Hughson Sport in the City - Cultural Connections (Hardcover)
Michael P. Sam, John Hughson
R3,974 Discovery Miles 39 740 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Sport is seen as an increasingly important aspect of urban and regional planning. Related programmes have moved to the forefront of agendas for cities of the present and future. This has occurred as the barriers between so-called 'high' and 'popular' culture continue to disintegrate. Sport is now a key component within strategies for the cultural regeneration of cities and regions, a tendency with mixed outcomes - at times fostering genuinely democratic arrangements, at others pseudo-democratic arrangements, whereby political, business and cultural elites manipulate a sense of sameness and unity among their fellow citizens to smooth the path for the pursuit of what are actually vested interests. Almost any active enactment of a 'sports city of culture' risks divisiveness. Recognizing controversies, with both potentially positive and negative outcomes, this book examines sport within contexts of urban and regional regeneration, via a number of rather different case studies. Within these studies, the role of sport stadium development, franchise expansion and sports-fan (and anti-sport) activism is addressed and articulated with issues concerning, inter alia, public funding, environmental impact, urban infrastructure and citizen identity. The 'sport in the city' project commenced as a research symposium held at the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand and number of the essays originate from this occasion. This book was previously published as a special issue of Sport in Society.

House of Slaughter Vol 4: James Tynion IV House of Slaughter Vol 4
James Tynion IV; Illustrated by Werther Dell’Edera; Sam Johns
R214 Discovery Miles 2 140 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The pack-hunting White Masks take center stage in the thrilling “Alabaster” arc set in the bestselling, award-winning world of Something is Killing the Children! In the ruthless war against monsters, nothing is unthinkable or off-limits for the White Masks. A fan-favorite White Mask named Bait (a mute boy with amputated arms and a tendency to survive suicidal odds), is dispatched with a mission more malicious than imaginable in a group home for children. While Bait does his best to ignore the children’s cruelty toward him, he’s left with more questions than answers after monsters attack. What does a kind, mysterious girl named Nannette have to do with what’s going on? With Bait’s fellow White Masks Paris and Tybalt keeping the pressure on, and Scarlet Mask Gerde’s secret scheming in the shadows, writer Sam Johns (Punchline) and artist Letizia Cadonici (The Neighbors) take House of Slaughter to new emotional depths of terror. Collects House of Slaughter #16-20.

The Good Life (Paperback): Jeremy Sams The Good Life (Paperback)
Jeremy Sams; Originally written by John Esmonde, Bob Larbey
R252 Discovery Miles 2 520 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

When Tom and Barbara Good decide to exchange the pressures of the rat race for an alternative, more sustainable way of living, they set about turning their suburban home in Surbiton into a model of self-sufficiency. They grow their own fruit and veg, keep livestock in the garden, make their own clothes, and even generate their own electricity from manure. It's the good life for them - but not for Margo and Jerry Leadbetter, who live next door, and are desperately trying to maintain the Surbiton status quo. Jeremy Sams' stage play, based on the hugely popular sitcom by John Esmonde and Bob Larbey, reunites the well-loved characters (not forgetting Geraldine the goat) as they get themselves into and out of scrapes - some old, some new, all hilarious. Tapping into issues that resonate now more than ever, The Good Life is a witty reimagining of a television classic, with a wellyful of laughs that's sure to delight audiences everywhere. It was first produced by Fiery Angel on an extensive tour of the UK in 2021, directed by Jeremy Sams and starring Rufus Hound, Preeya Kalidas, Dominic Rowan and Sally Tatum.

Cross-Cultural Psychology (Hardcover): David L. Sam, John W Berry Cross-Cultural Psychology (Hardcover)
David L. Sam, John W Berry
R34,575 Discovery Miles 345 750 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The consequences of globalization and mass migration are such that, it has been estimated, over 200 million people are living in countries other than where they were born. And as formerly homogeneous societies evolve into multicultural entities with traditional social and geographic boundaries giving way to increasingly complex representations of identity, new-and urgent-questions for psychologists, social scientists, and policymakers arise. As research in and around cross-cultural psychology burgeons as never before, this new four-volume collection from Routledge meets the need for an authoritative reference work to make sense of a rapidly growing and ever more complex corpus of literature. Edited by two leading scholars, the collection is organized into four principal sections: Basic Issues; Theory and Method; Substantive Findings in Basic Processes; and Substantive Findings in Applied Issues. Cross-Cultural Psychology provides a one-stop 'mini library' of foundational and canonical work. The collection also includes cutting-edge analyses and discussions of theory and research, alongside major works addressing policy implications.

Revolver One - Salgood Sam's Comics Quaterly (Paperback): Salgood Sam Revolver One - Salgood Sam's Comics Quaterly (Paperback)
Salgood Sam; Text written by John O'Brien, A. J. Duric
R376 Discovery Miles 3 760 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Book one of Revolver is a collection of seven short stories, and assorted words & pictures. Exploring themes of mortality, belonging, identity and place. Some are parts of larger ongoing works but all can be read and enjoyed as stand alone tales.
"Salgood's drifting vision has an incredible sense of space and freedom. Your eye moves across the page continuously, an angel floating through worlds." "Revolver plays with how we perceive things, and where we anchor ourselves." - Sherwin Tjia
Though muted and limited in palette, the art demonstrates a level of skill many comic artists can only aspire to. Perspectives are juxtaposed Escher-like adding to the alter-reality quality of each individual story as well as the collection generally. Revolver One feels like a cohesive whole. - Rachel Fenton
"Throughout this issue, you can feel Max Douglas's joy in experimenting with line, tone and page design, in a way that is simpatico with other big names of the small press like Tomer Hanuka or Farel Dalrymple. This is the kind of comics I unashamedly love, dense work by a creator following his vision and sharing the journey with his readers." - John Martz
