• Assesses the various meanings attached to calls for police
reform in the public discourse on social media • Suitable for
academic levels ranging from undergraduate to graduate-level
college courses in policing, social media, and research methods •
A unique look at the impact of social media on the public discourse
about policing and crime
In this special edited volume, the editors and invited English
Medium Instruction (EMI) researchers, from different parts of the
world, outline the latest EMI research methods. Providing academic
instruction using English is rapidly spreading in many countries
where English is a second or foreign language, and there is a
growing interest in researching the effectiveness and effects of
EMI across different educational levels. This volume includes
chapters on everything from research into classroom interaction to
teachers' and students' perceptions and motivations to language
challenges and strategies and the pedagogical implications of
translanguaging in EMI classrooms. These specific topics were
chosen to reflect different approaches to researching EMI. Each
chapter focuses on a specific type of research methodology. It
begins with an overview of the literature of the topic under
discussion. Then an example study is provided to illustrate how
this methodology can be used to investigate EMI. Each chapter
identifies the process that the EMI researcher used to conduct
their research and discusses key dilemmas they faced, focusing
particularly on the methodological issues they encountered. By
exploring these issues, this volume hopes to inform theory (or the
lack thereof) underlying research into the phenomenon of EMI. This
volume is indispensable for EMI tutors, curriculum developers,
policymakers, and teachers, as well as students at both
undergraduate and postgraduate levels. It is particularly valuable
for researchers from across the globe working in the fields of
applied linguistics, language education, English for Academic
Purposes (EAP), English Language Teaching (ELT), and Teaching
English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).

Should grandparents have rights in relation to their grandchildren?
If so, what should the content of those rights be, both
procedurally and substantively? And what is the appropriate role of
the law in providing solutions to problems arising in the context
of grandparents' rights? This book considers these questions from
both a public and a private law perspective, and analyses the human
rights implications for parties such as children, parents and
grandparents. It also explores the topic of grandparents' rights in
the context of the European Convention on Human Rights and the
United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, as well as in
other jurisdictions, such as Iran, France and Nepal. The book
argues that grandparents' rights have so far received insufficient
acknowledgement and, consequently, that relationships between
grandparents and grandchildren have received insufficient
protection. However, it is crucial that the protection of
grandparents' rights is balanced with the rights of parents and the
rights and welfare of children; the book considers how best to
achieve this, for example in disputes on child arrangements (i.e.
residence and contact), child protection matters and in adoption
cases. The book is of particular interest to all academics seeking
a clear framework for the protection of grandparents' rights in
private and public law proceedings.

Bringing together the most up-to-date information on congenital
Mullerian anomalies, this comprehensive text explores advances in
understanding the embryological causes of these malformations, the
systems used to classify the many types of malformation that may be
seen, and the field's current diagnosis, evaluation and management
techniques. Surgical strategies, including minimally invasive
techniques, are described in detail, with chapters divided into two
sections: vertical anomalies, such as imperforate hymen, transverse
genital septum, and cervical and Mullerian agenesis; and lateral
anomalies, such as septate, unicornate and bicornate uterus, uterus
didelphys and obstructed hemivagina. Aimed at helping to maintain
the future reproductive needs of the patient utilizing assisted
reproductive technologies, this book is an excellent reference for
OB/GYN surgeons and reproductive medicine specialists treating both
adolescent or adult patients with these congenital malformations.
Religion was as central in the day-to-day lives of prehistoric
southwestern people, just as it is in the lives of their
descendants today. Examining the role of religion can help to
explain architecture, pottery, agriculture, even commerce. But
archaeologists have only recently developed the theoretical and
methodological tools with which to study this topic. Religion in
the Prehispanic Southwest marks the first book-length study of
prehistoric religion in the region. Drawing on a rich array of
empirical approaches, the contributors show the importance of
understanding beliefs and ritual for a range of time periods and
southwestern societies. For professional and avocational
archaeologists, for religion scholars and students, Religion in the
Prehispanic Southwest represents an important contribution.

Counseling Youth: Systemic Issues and Interventions highlights the
nature of counseling youth and implementing interventions from a
systemic perspective. This systemic perspective focuses on the
multitude of issues and systems that impact youth and mental
health, such as academic progress and achievement; emotional and
behavioral problems; and overall behaviors that impact physical and
emotional well-being. As these aforementioned issues are addressed,
highlighted are the roles of various systems, including schools,
mental health facilities, medical facilities, juvenile justice
systems, and refugee services, as well as services geared to
special populations, such as LGBT+ youth and undocumented immigrant
minors. Included in this text is a brief overview of
child-adolescent development that then focuses on issues, policies,
and services for counseling youth in schools, communities, and
clinical settings. Central to this book are the issues that
families, schools, and communities are having difficulty
addressing, such as trauma, abuse, suicide, teen pregnancy, and
antisocial behavior, and the key to addressing these issues by
utilizing a variety of resources within the system and advocating
for systemic change. Utilized is a multidimensional focus on
development, issues, and strategies, providing an integrative
approach so that clinicians (present and future) have an
understanding of the theory, concerns, policies, and approaches for
working youth. This book also utilizes a transtheoretical approach
and attempts to provide an overview of approaches and interventions
regardless of theoretical approach. Unlike books that focus on a
singular model, this approach is to speak to a variety of
individuals training to be clinicians from a variety of backgrounds
(e.g., social work, marriage and family therapy, counseling,
psychology).
This book explores non-consensual adoption - an area of law which
has sparked considerable debate amongst academics, practitioners
and the judiciary nationally and internationally. The emphasis of
this book is on the circumstances in which non-consensual adoption
may be regarded as a proportionate measure and when less severe
forms of intervention, such as long-term foster care or kinship
care, may also meet children's needs while providing protection to
children's rights under the European Convention on Human Rights.
The book builds on existing literature on adoption law but takes
the discussion in new directions, placing an emphasis on the need
to closely scrutinise children's and parents' rights at all stages
of the adoption process, not simply when parents appeal against the
making of an adoption order. A unique feature of this book is its
emphasis on routinely incorporating key provisions from the United
Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child into analysis when
determining whether an adoption order is a proportionate measure.
Municipal solid waste (MSW) is a domestic energy resource with the
potential to provide a significant amount of energy to meet U.S.
liquid fuel requirements. MSW is defined as household waste,
commercial solid waste, non-hazardous sludge, conditionally exempt,
small quantity hazardous waste and industrial solid waste. This
book examines the potential use of MSW to make synthesis gas
(syngas) suitable for production of liquid fuels; the expected
process scale required for favorable economics; the availability of
MSW in quantities sufficient to meet process scale requirements and
state-of-the-art MSW gasification technology.

From the author of The Boy, the Boat, and the Beast comes a "richly
imagined fable" (Susan Fletcher, author of Journey of the Pale
Bear, a Golden Kite Honor Book) about a boy who's grown up as the
only human in an enchanted rainforest and what happens when people
from the outside world discover his home. For the first twelve
years of Arrow's life, he grew up as the only human in a lush,
magical rainforest that's closed off from the rest of the world. He
was raised by the Guardian Tree, the protector of the forest, which
uses the earth's magic to keep it hidden from those who have sought
to exploit and kill it. But now the magic veil is deteriorating,
the forest is dying, and Arrow may be the only one who can save it.
Arrow never saw another human until one day, a man in a small
airplane crash-lands in the forest. Then, a group of children finds
their way in, escaping from their brutal, arid world where the rich
live in luxurious, walled-off cities and the poor struggle for
survival. The Guardian Tree urges Arrow to convince the trespassers
to leave by any means necessary. Arrow is curious about these
newcomers, but their arrival sets off a chain of events that leave
him with a devastating choice: be accepted by his own kind or fight
to save the forest that is his home.

Assimilation, Resilience, and Survival illustrates how settler
colonialism propelled U.S. government programs designed to
assimilate generations of Native children at the Stewart Indian
School (1890–1980). The school opened in Carson City, Nevada, in
1890 and embraced its mission to destroy the connections between
Native children and their lands, isolate them from their families,
and divorce them from their cultures and traditions. Newly enrolled
students were separated from their families, had their appearances
altered, and were forced to speak only English. However, as
Samantha M. Williams uncovers, numerous Indigenous students and
their families subverted school rules, and tensions arose between
federal officials and the local authorities charged with
implementing boarding school policies. The first book on the
history of the Stewart Indian School, Assimilation, Resilience, and
Survival reveals the experiences of generations of Stewart School
alumni and their families, often in their own words. Williams
demonstrates how Indigenous experiences at the school changed over
time and connects these changes with Native American activism and
variations in federal policy. Williams’s research uncovers
numerous instances of abuse at Stewart, and Assimilation,
Resilience, and Survival addresses both the trauma of the boarding
school experience and the resilience of generations of students who
persevered there under the most challenging of circumstances.
