Santa Arias
R2,123 Discovery Miles 21 230 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Retorica, historia y polemica is a study of Bartolome de las Casas' writings, within the context of the European Renaissance intellectual tradition. The book examines the rhetoric and "politics of discourse" to demonstrate how the Dominican advocate of Amerindian rights subverted the relationship between Renaissance Christian humanism and New World experience, thus arriving at the most pervasive antihegemonic perspective of the conquest. The project focuses principally on Las Casas' most ambitious text, Historia de las Indias (1522-1527), although examples are also drawn from De unico vocationis modo (1522-1527). (TEXT IN SPANISH)

The Spatial Turn - Interdisciplinary Perspectives (Paperback): Barney Warf, Santa Arias The Spatial Turn - Interdisciplinary Perspectives (Paperback)
Barney Warf, Santa Arias
R1,823 Discovery Miles 18 230 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Across the disciplines, the study of space has undergone a profound and sustained transformation. Space, place, mapping, and geographical imaginations have become commonplace topics in a variety of analytical fields in part because globalization has accentuated the significance of location. While this transformation has led to a renaissance in human geography, it also has manifested itself in the humanities and other social sciences. The purpose of this book is not to announce that space is significant, which by now is well known, but to explore how space is analyzed by a variety of disciplines, to compare and contrast these approaches, identify commonalities, and explore how and why differences appear.

The volume includes works by 13 scholars from a variety of geographical regions and disciplines. The chapters combine up-to-date literature reviews concerning the role of space in each discipline and several offer original empirical analyses. Some chapters are concerned with Geography while others explore the role of space in contemporary Anthropology, Sociology, Religion, Political Science, Film, and Cultural Studies. The introduction surveys the development of the spatial turn across the fields under consideration.

Despite frequent reference to the spatial turn, this is the first volume to explicitly address how theory and practice concerning space, is used in a variety of fields from diverse conceptual perspectives. This book will appeal to everyone conducting conceptual and theoretical research on space, not simply in Geography, but in related fields as well.

Approaches to Teaching the Writings of Bartolome de Las Casas (Paperback): Santa Arias Approaches to Teaching the Writings of Bartolome de Las Casas (Paperback)
Santa Arias
R1,006 Discovery Miles 10 060 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The work of Bartolome de Las Casas poses a number of challenges in the classroom: students need help seeing the relevance of a sixteenth-century Dominican missionary to their lives, understanding his colonial-imperial context, and negotiating the apparent contradictions among his evangelizing and his varying stances on Indian and black slavery in the New World. The essays gathered in this volume show teachers how to introduce and engage with Las Casas--one of the first voices to criticize European treatment of the native populations of the Americas and crucial today to studies of imperialism, colonialism, and human rights--in a wide range of courses, undergraduate and graduate.

Like all volumes in the Approaches series, this collection includes a convenient survey of original and supplementary materials and a comprehensive array of classroom tactics. The first group of essays incorporates Las Casas into the interdisciplinary classroom, while the next group focuses on teaching the Las Casas text most widely used in literature courses: the Brevisima relacion de la destruccion de las Indias, a dramatic, largely firsthand view of colonial violence. The essays that follow explore the Spanish friar's letters, treatises, and petitions to the Crown; locate his connection to such broader issues as independence movements in Latin America, inter-European politics, abolition, and human rights; and suggest ways of teaching him alongside colonial figures such as Christopher Columbus and within the literary traditions of a variety of nations and languages.
