Dabei fliesst mehr und mehr Geld von Nord nach Sud. Heute entfallen uber 30% der weltweiten Direktinvestitionen auf Entwicklungslander und bilden so deren grossten Nettokapitalzufluss . Allein 2005 wurden hier rund 334 Mrd. US-Dollar an auslandischem Kapital investiert. Viele Entwicklungslander erhofften sich aus dieser neuen Kapitalquelle positive Wachstumseffekte und liberalisierten ihre Markte, um so auslandische Direktinvestitionen anzuziehen. In der wissenschaftlichen Diskussion werden jedoch sowohl positive als auch negative Auswirkungen von Direktinvestitionen auf das Wirtschaftswachstum des Empfangerlandes erortert.
