Scarcely a week goes by without coverage in the UK and international media about the latest MOOC revelation. Despite some significant initiatives in the dotcom era, online learning has somehow never delivered on its promise to revolutionize education. To MOOC or not to MOOC explores the history of MOOCs and analyses the current MOOC context by describing six institutions and the story of their engagement with MOOCs. Looking at each of the different type of institution in turn, it analyses the processes behind their decision to engage with online learning and MOOCs, how the MOOC project is managed and led, and discusses issues such as quality assurance, governance and partnerships. Chapters draw together and analyse the data and draw out advice for institutions, to help them make choices about how to respond to MOOCs and other high-impact changes in digital education. The book contains checklists and planning tools to support strategy and planning, and concludes with a future look at MOOCs exploring some of the possible trends that may impact upon higher education, such as business models, data and analytics, learning design and competitors in the MOOC marketplace.

Recently widowed Ellen Kirkpatrick, the heart and soul of "Hot Cross Buns," has chucked her job as a high school counselor to follow her deepest passion - pastries - opening a spectacularly successful coffee shop and bakery in Spokane's tony South Hill neighborhood. Attracting a noteworthy group of customers, the unique characters in "Hot Cross Buns" are deeply rich and delicious - Molly, Ellen's resolute, Jesuit-inspired-to save-the world daughter; Liam, a captivating Notre Dame and Harvard-educated lawyer; Jack, an emotionally-iced physician who, despite his best efforts, defrosts at the mere thought of Ellen; Lou, Ellen's forthright, relationship-meddling BFF; Father Joe, Liam's mentor turned friend at Notre Dame University struggling with professional and personal demons; Clare, at the heart of the aforementioned struggle; Lillian Johnson, the shrewd octogenarian who's learned a bit about love over the years; and many other compelling characters. Swept up in a stunning story of complex relationships, readers will travel from Spokane to Chicago and Los Angeles, ultimately rewarded with a charming surprise ending as the capricious fates work their magic on this treasured collection of friends and family.

This work on the theory of education was first published in 1839. The five writers had been chosen as the winners in a competition for an essay on the 'Expediency and Means of Elevating the Profession of the Educator in Society', organised by the Central Society of Education, founded in 1837 to promote state funding of education, at a time when the 'monitor' system, whereby older children taught younger ones, was seen as an effective (and money-saving) method. The journalist John Lalor (1814 56) won first prize with a wide-ranging consideration of all the aspects of education, comparing the status of teachers through history and across several countries, and championing their 'sacred mission'. The runners-up were the writer John A. Heraud, the Unitarian minister Edward Higginson, the lawyer and author James Simpson, and Mrs Sarah Porter, prolific writer on education and sister of the political economist David Ricardo."
