She thinks of blue mountain, her favourite place. 'We're going
somewhere where we can be safe. We never have to come back here.'
As the rest of the world lies sleeping, Eleanor straps her infant
daughter, Amy, into the back of her car. This is the moment she
knew must come, when they will walk out on her husband Leon and a
marriage in ruins since his return from Vietnam. Together, she and
Amy will journey to blue mountain, a place of enchantment and
refuge that lit up Eleanor's childhood. As the car eats up the
miles, so Eleanor's mind dives back into her fractured relationship
with her mother, Kitty. Kitty who asked for so much from life, from
love, from family. Kitty who had battled so hard to prise her
husband George out of the grip of war. Kitty, whose disapproving
voice rings so loud in Eleanor's head. Tense, visceral, glittering,
it is a masterful return to fiction from the author of the
acclaimed See What I Have Done.
Sarah Schmidt's systematic interpretation of Schleiermacher's
philosophical work focuses on his concept of "mutual
determination". This is where his answer is to be found to the
question of a possible orientation in a world of the finite. This
particular focus underlines Schleiermacher'srelevance and proves to
be particularly fruitful in emphasising the unity of his
philosophical oeuvre, which has received little attention to date.
The occupation with Schleiermacher's philosophy of mutual
determination proceeds in four systematic steps, each of which
turns to a particular text corpus - the early Berlin writings, the
lectures on dialectics, the lectures on hermeneutics and critique,
and finally the lectures on philosophical ethics.

Examination Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject English -
Pedagogy, Didactics, Literature Studies, grade: 1,0, University of
Duisburg-Essen (Department of Anglophone Studies), 28 entries in
the bibliography, language: English, abstract: This critical essay
investigates the acquisition of phonology. It is amazing how
rapidly children develop in the first years of their lives. The
acquisition of their mother tongue is especially fascinating
because it is such a complex process. Not only the linguistic code
has to be fully acquired but also all its rules and norms. That is,
apart from the language's phonology, morphology, syntax, lexis and
semantics, - constituting the code of every language -pragmatic
rules are also important for the daily use and the full dominance
of a language. This essay focuses on the most basic field,
phonology, and explains how a child acquires the target language's
phonology. Although the stages of the acquisition process are
described generally since they are universal and hold true for all
children independently of their mother tongue, the attention is on
the English phonology in particular. First language acquisition in
general is an important topic, not only for linguists. To have
knowledge about it also helps the parents to raise children,
especially in bilingual situations. I, myself, consider it very
useful to write about such a topic as one can learn to understand
what and how many stages and steps are actually involved. If we
know how it works, perhaps we may also understand why children
initially make errors or quite unusual utterances or even
extraordinary sounds (in the pre-language stages) while acquiring
the native language. The essay will provide information about the
whole acquisition process. However, the main focus will be on the
first four to six years.
Longlisted for the Women's Prize for Fiction 2018 Haunting,
gripping and gorgeously written, SEE WHAT I HAVE DONE by Sarah
Schmidt is a re-imagining of the unsolved American true crime case
of the Lizzie Borden murders, for fans of BURIAL RITES and MAKING A
MURDERER. 'Eerie and compelling' Paula Hawkins 'Stunning' Sunday
Times 'Gripping... outstanding' Observer 'Glittering' Irish Times
Just after 11am on 4th August 1892, the bodies of Andrew and Abby
Borden are discovered. He's found on the sitting room sofa, she
upstairs on the bedroom floor, both murdered with an axe. It is
younger daughter Lizzie who is first on the scene, so it is Lizzie
who the police first question, but there are others in the
household with stories to tell: older sister Emma, Irish maid
Bridget, the girls' Uncle John, and a boy who knows more than
anyone realises. In a dazzlingly original and chilling reimagining
of this most notorious of unsolved mysteries, Sarah Schmidt opens
the door to the Borden home and leads us into its murkiest corners,
where jealousies, slow-brewed rivalries and the darkest of thoughts
reside.
