Virtually all fiscal measures influence people's health, through
their impacts on behaviour, consumption, income and wealth. A
narrow subset of fiscal measures, however, can be more directly
aimed at improving health by targeting behaviours and risks that
are known to be strongly associated with health outcomes. The
purpose of this book is to discuss the subject of these measures,
which we define as 'health taxes'. The book aims to enumerate key
health taxes of interest, explore their positive and negative
effects, and how these effects are influenced by the design of
these taxes and the context in which they are applied. We ask how
and where they can be implemented. Critically, we build an argument
throughout the book for why policymakers across government should
care about health taxes.
This book examines the debate over the proper connection in society between religion and public life, that took place in the fifty years following the American Revolution. Jonathan Sassi challenges the conventional wisdom, finding an essential continuity to the period's public Christianity. Most previous studies have seen this period as one of sharp disjuncture, in which the nation's cultural paradigm shifted from republicanism to liberal individualism.
This volume contains a selection of papers presented at the 21st
international conference on domain decomposition methods in science
and engineering held in Rennes, France, June 25-29, 2012. Domain
decomposition is an active and interdisciplinary research
discipline, focusing on the development, analysis and
implementation of numerical methods for massively parallel
computers. Domain decomposition methods are among the most
efficient solvers for large scale applications in science and
engineering. They are based on a solid theoretical foundation and
shown to be scalable for many important applications. Domain
decomposition techniques can also naturally take into account
multiscale phenomena. This book contains the most recent results in
this important field of research, both mathematically and
algorithmically and allows the reader to get an overview of this
exciting branch of numerical analysis and scientific
computing.
This book provides a comprehensive overview of key aspects of food
insecurity, including definitional and conceptual issues,
information systems and data sources, indicators, and policies. The
aim is to equip readers with a sound understanding of the subject
that will assist in the recognition of food insecurity and the
design of suitable responses. The early chapters discuss the
evolution and limitations of the concept and provide a set of
conceptual frameworks for the analysis of food security. Systems
used to collect data and their evolution over time are then
explained, and the most commonly adopted indicators for monitoring
food security are presented. Approaches to food security are then
thoroughly reviewed decade by decade. Specific attention is paid to
the food insecurity challenge in the new millennium, focusing
particularly on recent food crises and institutional and
policy-related consequences. Finally, the specific terminology of
food aid and assistance is examined, with discussion of the
instruments recently adopted in the food aid system. This book will
be an informative and stimulating resource for both students and
professionals.
Here is an opportunity to discover some of the best new,
unpublished poets from the Caribbean. With a generous sample from
each poet, there are new writers from Jamaica, Trinidad, St Lucia,
St Vincent and Guyana.Meet Danielle Boodoo-Fortune and her richly
gothic take on love and its complications; Danielle Jennings'
exuberant narratives of family history and the struggles for
respect between men and women; Ruel Johnson's often witty attempts
to confront the insanity of contemporary Guyana's race wars and
political corruption through the formal coolness of poetry; Monica
Minott's frank celebrations of women's sexuality and her attempt to
re-enter the world of spirit possession and trance; Debra
Providence's spare womanist reflections that pack a more
devastating punch by saying more with less; Shivanee Ramlochan's
confidently experimental poems that explore the threatening
uncertainties of the present through the imagery of speculative
fictions set in some post-disaster world; Colin Robinson's
polyphonic, modernist reflections on the queer Caribbean and its
joys and sorrows; and Sassy Ross's tightly structured explorations
of memory between the here and there of St Lucia and New York. Here
is a generation that has absorbed Walcott, Brathwaite, Carter and
Lorna Goodison, but has found its own distinctive voices, themes
and formal models. Each of the contributors is well on the way to
having their own first collections.Coming Up Hot is the second
publication of Peekash Press, a joint imprint of Akashic Books and
Peepal Tree Press committed to supporting the emergence of new
Caribbean writing, as part of CaribLit project.

Experience the story of the Bible like never before with this playful
book all about the obedient and faithful feet of God's followers.
The Bible talks about the "beautiful feet" of those that bring "good
news" (Isaiah 52:7). But have you ever stopped to think about who those
feet belong to? In this lighthearted tour through the Bible, readers
will be introduced to the obedient and faithful feet of beloved Bible
characters, from Noah's hairy feet that helped him build the ark, to
David's brave feet as he stood in front of the giant Goliath, to the
joyful feet of the women who spread the news of Christ's resurrection.
Little ones will be entertained by the silly focus on all kinds of
feet-stinky, hairy, chubby, grubby-as they hear the Gospel message and
grow in faith. Take a stroll beyond basic Bible story books and dip
your toe into something new with this giggle-inducing read aloud.
Filling a gap in existing literature on sustainable design, this
new guide introduces and illustrates sustainable design principles
through detailed case studies of sustainable buildings in Europe,
North America and Australia. The guide will provide the reader with
a deeper understanding of the design issues involved in delivering
sustainable buildings, and giving detailed description of the
process of integrating principles into practice. Approximately one
hundred case studies of sixty buildings, ranging from small
dwellings to large commercial buildings, and drawn from a range of
countries, demonstrate best current practice. The sections of the
book are divided into design issues relating to sustainable
development, including site and ecology, community and culture,
health, materials, energy and water. With over 400 illustrations,
this highly visual guide will be an invaluable reference to all
those concerned with architecture and sustainability issues.

An acclaimed study of the diverse origins of ancient Greek
philosophy In this acclaimed book, Maria Michela Sassi reconstructs
the intellectual world of the early Greek "Presocratics" to provide
a richer understanding of the roots of what used to be called "the
Greek miracle." This unique study explores the full range of early
Greek thinkers in the context of their worlds-from the Milesian
natural thinkers, the rhapsode Xenophanes, and the mathematician
and "shaman" Pythagoras, to the inspired Parmenides, the oracular
Heraclitus, and the naturalist and seer Empedocles.
