This book is the proceedings of the Falk Symposium No. 137 on
"Liver Diseases: Advances in Treatment and Prevention" (part of the
XII International Falk Liver Week 2003 in honour of Hans Poppera
(TM)s 100th birthday, held on October 17-19, 2003). It covers our
present knowledge of the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of
liver diseases, including hepatitis B, hepatitis C and delta
hepatitis as well as alcoholic liver diseases, non-alcoholic
steatohepatitis and the hereditary liver diseases haemochromatosis,
Wilsona (TM)s disease and alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency. In
addition to these clinical entities, the sequelae of liver
cirrhosis and its complications, including the clinical management
of ascites, the hepatorenal as well as the hepato- and
porto-pulmonary hypertension syndrome are discussed. New
developments with respect to liver support systems and liver
transplantation are further highlights of the proceedings.
The main topics mentioned above are complemented by
state-of-the-art chapters on "Hepatocellular Carcinoma," "Emerging
Hepatitis Viruses" and "Fulminant Liver Failure" that are of
interest to both basic scientists as well as clinicians. A special
section is devoted to "Liver Histology" as a tribute to Hans Popper
who contributed eminently to the basic and clinical aspects of
hepatology.
All in all, Liver Diseases: Advances in Treatment and Prevention
provides an exciting overview of the current developments in the
treatment and prevention of viral, alcoholic, non-alcoholic and
hereditary liver diseases, presented by an international faculty of
outstanding scientists and clinicians.
The beginning of a new millennium is an ideal opportunity to look
back, to contemplate the present and to envisage what the future
might have to offer. This seems particularly appropriate for the
rapidly developing field of hepatology. Therefore, the aim of the
Falk Symposium 117, Hepatology 2000, held in Munich on 4-6 May
2000, was to offer state-of-the-art information on the most
important aspects of hepatology and to discuss the challenges of
the future. The presentations were given by experts in their
respective areas, providing an update and at the same time
incorporating the most recent developments. These proceedings, a
tour d'horizon of hepatology at the highest clinical and scientific
level, is dedicated to Gustav Paumgartner who has retired from his
duties as chairman of the Department of Medicine II at the
University of Munich- Grosshadern. The scientific organisers take
this opportunity to thank their academic teacher and to honour his
lifelong engagement and achievements in hepatology. This book is
cordially dedicated to him.
Liver cirrhosis is a major clinical problem worldwide and is
associated with significant morbidity and mortality from its
complications, such as liver cell insufficiency with coagulopathy
and hepatic encephalopathy, portal hypertension with ascites and
gastrointestinal bleeding, hepatorenal syndrome, HCC development
and others. This volume, the proceedings of Falk Symposium 115 held
in Basel, Switzerland, October 22-24, 1999 (Part II of the Basel
Liver Week 1999; XI International Congress of Liver Diseases)
covers our present knowledge of the aetiologies and early stages of
liver cirrhosis development. Based on this information, strategies
are discussed that are aimed at the prevention, early diagnosis and
therapy of chronic liver diseases, thus preventing their
progression to cirrhosis and its complications, including HCC
development. The main topics mentioned above are complemented by
three state-of-the-art chapters on modern aspects of medicine in
general and hepatology in particular as well as their perspectives
beyond the year 2000: `Molecular Medicine', `New Hepatitis Viruses'
and `Genetic Liver Diseases: Diagnosis and Therapy'. Introductory
chapters focusing on the more basic aspects of the biology of live
cells as well as on the mechanisms underlying fibrogenesis,
cholestasis and inflammation will be followed by a detailed
discussion of the clinically most important causes of liver
cirrhosis worldwide: hepatitis viruses B, C and D; toxins (alcohol,
drugs and others) as well as metabolic liver diseases
(haemochromatosis, Wilson disease, alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency,
porphyria cutanea tarda and protoporphyria). This book, therefore,
will interest clinically oriented basic scientists as well as those
in clinical practice, givng an update on many aspects of modern
hepatology and its perspectives in the next millennium.
This book is the proceedings of Falk Symposium 157, entitled
?Chronic Hepatitis: Metabolic, Cholestatic, Viral and Autoimmune?,
held in Freiburg, Germany, on 10--11 October 2006 (one of three
symposia during the XIII Falk Liver Week 2006). It provides
up-to-date information on new developments in the field of chronic
hepatitis and its various entities. In recent decades we have
learned how heterogeneous the clinical entity of chronic hepatitis
has become. The liver, as the central organ of metabolism and
detoxification, is more than ever a target of disease processes
evolving from the spread of obesity in the western world. Apart
from nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), alcoholic liver disease
is still the most prevalent liver disease in the west...
Constant change is what marks the history of the European city.
Over centuries, architecture's reactions to social
disruptions-natural disaster, plague, or war-have fashioned the
city into an engine of civilization. And bound up with this has
been the promise of economic independence, social cohesion, and
individual freedom. Now fundamental challenges, such as climate
change, are bringing cities face to face with new transformations
that call into question the continuity and sustainability of the
ethical foundations underpinning urban ways of life. Bold and
decisive steps are needed. How far can urban planning, landscape
planning, and architecture foster the vital processes of change?
How can the city offset possible losses caused by altered
lifestyles, integrate new technologies, or rehearse new forms of
behaviour and ultimately sublimate them into a functioning culture?
In this volume, the members of the Architecture Section of the
Akademie der Kunste Berlin and their invited guests from all over
Europe introduce their positions by means of projects, visions, and
manifestos. Essays by selected authors with different viewpoints
supplement the practical discourse. Published by Tim Rieniets,
Matthias Sauerbruch, and Joern Walter on behalf of the Akademie der
Kunste, Berlin. With a photoessay by Erik-Jan Ouwerkerk.
Following the pair of monographic "Sauerbruch Hutton Archives"
(Archive, 2006; Archive 2, 2016) Lars Mu ller Publishers presents a
reader edited by the architects. Matthias Sauerbruch and Louisa
Hutton have asked a diverse group of authors to reflect on the
various conditions that have shaped the conception, production and
dissemination of architecture in Europe over the course of the last
three decades, and of the architecture that has resulted. The
essays generally include observations on one or more of Sauerbruch
Hutton's buildings, but these do not necessarily form the focus of
the respective texts. The authors include critics who have written
on the work of the practice in the past, architectural colleagues
and writers whose opinions and observations are respected by the
editors as well as a handful of people who either live or work in
one of their buildings and so have experienced Sauerbruch Hutton's
architecture firsthand. Further, a photographic essay by the
Finnish artist Ola Kolehmainen will augment the twenty-fi ve essays
with works created between 1990 and 2020. Analogous to the written
pieces, these are images in their own right and of their own
subjects that have been triggered by the presence of one of
Sauerbruch Hutton's buildings.
"The current compendium traces the development of the office's
architectural practice and thinking through a series of completed
buildings, works in progress and projects that, as yet, remain
unrealised. The book illuminates its strategies of sustainable
design, its multiple interventions in the post-industrial cityscape
and the unfolding of an architectural language full of sense and
sensuality that reacts to its physical and social context, as well
as to functional, technical, spatial and sculptural considerations.
The book reveals Sauerbruch and Hutton's understanding of their
profession as an ongoing process of research into presence and
future, and is the only comprehensive documentation of their
numerous works."

Florens Sauerbruch untersucht, welche Funktionen das
Beschlussmangelrecht im Kontrollgefuge der Aktiengesellschaft
erfullt.
tech nischer Schwierigkeiten gescheitert.
sichergestellt. Trotzdem darl man Erganzungen erwarten. Dasselbe
nachste Zukunft in Aussicht genommen."
Lebensstilen verbundene Verluste kompensiert, neue Technologien
unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln. Herausgegeben von Tim Rieniets,
Matthias Sauerbruch und Joern Walter im Auftrag der Akademie der
Kunste, Berlin. Mit einem Fotoessay von Erik-Jan Ouwerkerk.
