The Brood of The Witch Queen is a supernatural novel by Sax Rohmer. Sometimes called "Rohmers masterpiece" or "the scariest book ever written". The story deals with Robert Cairn and his suspicions of Antony Ferrara, the adopted son of an old friend and colleague of Robert's father, Dr Bruce Cairn, of infernal magic and supernatural influence. The novel begins with the strange murder of Sir Michael Ferrara. A horrifying series of events follows, many of them take place in an inner secret chamber inside a pyramid in Egypt. Summoned elements, burned corpses, women forced to prey upon their own husbands...

Monte Irvin, alderman of the city and prospective Lord Mayor of London, paced restlessly from end to end of the well-appointed library of his house in Prince's Gate. Between his teeth he gripped the stump of a burnt-out cigar. A tiny spaniel lay beside the fire, his beady black eyes following the nervous movements of the master of the house.

Arthur Henry Sarsfield Ward, better known as Sax Rohmer, was a prolific English novelist. He is most remembered for his series of novels featuring the master criminal Dr. Fu Manchu. His first published work was in 1903, the short story "The Mysterious Mummy" for "Pearson's Weekly." He published his first novel -- "Pause!" -- anonymously in 1910 and the first Fu Manchu story, "The Mystery of Dr. Fu Manchu," was serialized over 1912-13. The Fu Manchu stories, together with those featuring Gaston Max or Morris Klaw, made Rohmer one of the most successful and well-paid writers in of the 1920s and 1930s.

"Tales of Chinatown" is a collection of ten stories by Rohmer. Rohmer's stories take place in the Limehouse, a section of London containing Chinatown. Rohmer's Chinatown is full of the mystery and menace of the East. "The superficial inquirer comes away convinced that the romance of the Asiatic district has no existence outside the imaginations of writers of fiction. Yet here lies a secret quarter, as secret and as strange, in its smaller way, as its parent in China which is called the Purple Forbidden City." In the Limehouse you'll find crime, drugs, and Chief Inspector Red Kerry, struggling to keep a lid on this particular pot.

Ten stories featuring perhaps the most fantastic sleuth of them all: Moris Klaw, the Dream Detective. Accompanied by his beautiful daughter Isis, Klaw's mysterious abilities lead him to clues and answers concerning occult occurrances far beyond the ken of ordinary minds. Moris Klaw is a gifted eccentric in the Holmesian mode. The proprietor of a ramshackle antique shop in Wapping, Klaw is a tall, stoop-shouldered man, of indeterminate age and unidentifiable foreign acccent, with skin the color of "dirty vellum". He wears gold pince-nez, a flat bowler hat, and an old black cape, and is not only an expert in the legends and lore of valuable historical objects, but also a master of disguise.

In this very strange and striking romance, the author has added a remarkable charcter to fiction in the person of the world-dreamer and idealist Paul Merle. Here is Rohmer's most ambitious work, revealing his thoughts and philosophies more clearly than the sensational works for which he is best known.
