This collection of reports, prepared by students affiliated with the Security & Intelligence Program at The Ohio State University, addresses topics that students see as being relevant to the intelligence community. It spans the globe and a range of concerns. It captures a point in time. Their observations, and how they approach their work, offer a glimpse into the future that is nested in the present and rooted in the past. These insightful orientations will be the foundation from which they will work and, as such, convey insight to what they (and their generation) see as being noteworthy. This collection is edited by Jim Schnell. His career in the U.S. intelligence community has involved assignment to the Defense Intelligence Agency, Special Operations Command/Pacific, Joint Special Operations University, National Security Agency and U.S. Army Culture & Foreign Language Directorate. He is a Fulbright Scholar and has held teaching posts at The Ohio State University, University of Cincinnati, Miami University, Ohio University, Ohio Dominican University, Beijing Jiaotong University (China) and Royal University of Phnom Penh (Cambodia).

In January, 1983 Betsy Schnell Comtess was living her dream life in San Diego, California. A recent graduate of The Ohio State University (Dental Hygiene), she'd just turned 24 and was poised to accomplish a range of goals she'd set for herself. That all dramatically changed when she suffered a stroke that left her unable to handle the most basic of daily functions. Her goals changed from traveling the world to learning how to walk again. Her interactions with others and her surrounding environment experienced redefinition. This book, co-authored with Dr. Jim Schnell, focuses on how her interpersonal communication processes experienced redefinition and her sense of self was altered as well. Dr. Schnell's expertise with communication theory, coupled with his witness to her recovery and daily functioning, is used to ably interpret the evolution of her life in this regard. Ultimately a message of hope, this book serves as guide to those who have suffered a stroke and the families that support them. How we understand the world we communicate with is very much a matter of what we expect that world to be.

The conceptual framework for the Army Culture & Foreign Language Adviser (CFLA) Enterprise was implemented in 2008. This vision focused on ways and means for operationalizing culture into practices and planning. The program grew into a staff of four at TRADOC (Training & Doctrine Command) headquarters and 15 CFLAs spread across various Centers of Excellence (COEs). The program flourished but then experienced challenges associated with budget cutbacks and competing priorities within the Army. The chapters are written from the perspectives of Tseggai Isaac, Ph.D., CFLA at the Maneuver Support Center COE, Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri; El-Rayah Osman, Ph.D., CFLA at the Solider Support Institute, Fort Jackson, South Carolina; Mamdouh El-Nady, Ph.D., CFLA at the Army Aviation COE, Fort Rucker, Alabama; and Jim Schnell, Ph.D., CFLA Lead Social Scientist at Headquarters TRADOC, Fort Eustis, Virginia. Their perspectives convey keen insights regarding how the Army bureaucracy responded to this kind of innovation.

It draws from the expertise developed by Dr. Jim Schnell's 35 years in the military intelligence community, most notably serving as a HUMINT officer in China under the auspices of his Assistant Air Attache assignment in Beijing. This practitioner experience is enhanced via his theoretical background in civilian higher education. Schnell's Ph.D. (Ohio University, 1982) in human communication processes and relevant scholarly publications, focusing on China and cross-cultural relations, provide ample context for analyzing HUMINT operations in China.
