This book explores the nexus among food, energy and water in peri-urban areas, demonstrating how relevant this nexus is for environmental sustainability. In particular it examines the effective management of the nexus in the face of the risks and trade-offs of mitigation policies, and as a mean to create resilience to climate change. The book delineates strategies and actions necessary to develop and protect our natural resources and improve the functionality of the nexus, such as: integrated management of the major resources that characterize the metabolism of a city, stronger coordination among stakeholders who often weight differently the services that are relevant to their individual concerns, integration of efforts towards environmental protection, adaptation to and prevention of climate change and disaster risks mitigation.
The contributions in Risks Challenging Publics, Scientists and Government looks at risks not just as a technical, social, political or economic matter, but as originating and challenging the various disciplines. Contextual aspects, usually defined by engineers as "margin conditions", are generally not looked at, but deserve much more atttention, particularly when uncertainties are large. This book focuses on topics that received little attention until now, like economic aspects of disasters and land use planning as a mitigation tool. However, the volume also leaves room for more traditional issues, like risk perception, and environmental risk assessment of pollutants, plants, and new substances introduced in the market. Risks Challenging Publics, Scientists and Government is divided in four parts: - Emergency preparedness: from contingency plans to crisis management - Environment and public health: looking for new risk assessment tools - Embedding social and economic perspectives into risk assessment and management - Risk mitigation criteria in land use planning and critical infrastructures siting and design The book is particularly of interest to scientists in engineering, physics, medicine, biology, and social sciences focusing on risk aspects, risk analysis, and risk assessment.

This book comprises the main results of the Scenario (Support on Common European Strategy for sustainable natural and induced technological hazards mitigation) project, funded as a Specific Support Action under the VI FP. This book addresses three main needs: first, it constitutes an assessment of the situation of Europe as far as natural na-tech risks are considered; second, it suggests future research themes to be opened of widened so as to tackle new and emerging threats as well as changes in the potential response to risk governance, in order to improve the way scientific and technical expertise informs decision making regarding all fields of mitigation, ranging from structural to non structural measures, such as training, education and land use planning.
