Originally published 1886. This fascinating and well illustrated
farming book contains advice on every aspect of small scale
farming. Contents Include: Culture of Crops - Management of Cattle
- Poultry - Pigs - Farm Records - Ensilage System - Equipment and
Implements - Butter and Cheese Making - Construction of Building
etc. Many of the earliest farming books, particularly those dating
back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and
increasingly expensive. Home Farm Books are republishing many of
these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions,
using the original text and artwork.
Robert Scott Burn wrote this book in 1871 at a time of great
developments in science, industry and exploration, and when
materials for engineering and building were constantly being
improved and replaced. It offers, therefore, a useful coverage of
both traditional techniques and materials such as stone, brick and
pise, but also examines the developments in the use of cement for
wall covering as well as cement blocks to be used as artificial
stone. This reprint of the original work contains over 400 pages of
text dealing with materials, practical construction techniques,
masonry and brickwork, principles of design, drawing, plastering
and wall decoration, as well as many other aspects of construction.
The 160 plates which accompany the text include a large number of
drawings of different parts of buildings, including: window, door
and wall details in various styles; arches; staircases; consoles
and brackets in stone and terracotta; hollow and ornamental
brickwork and designs of shop fronts.
CRAIGINCHES - Life in Aberdeen's Prison is the story of this
forbidding place from its early days to its recent closure, told by
former prison officer Bryan Glennie. Having lived and breathed the
life of the prison up to his retirement, this is the real inside
story of rooftop riots, botched escapes, drugs being smuggled,
prisoners brewing beer in dung heaps and the prison's only hanging,
as well as dramatic tales of deployment to Peterhead when the SAS
stormed D wing. Craiginches had another side too, with visits from
Princess Anne, Robbie Shepherd, Charlie Nicholas, Evelyn Glennie
and many more who have had a direct connection with the prison
thanks to Bryan. All part of the constant efforts to rehabilitate
as many prisoners as possible through events inside the prison and
valuable conservation and community projects outside. And there's
also Bryan's very special relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson which
has endured through the decades. This is a unique insight into
prison life in Craiginches, showing both the difficulties and
dangers that were a part of everyday life and the rewarding side of
the job when inmates gave something positive back to society.
Arise is the fourth studio album by Brazilian thrash metal band
Sepultura, released in 1991 through Roadrunner Records. Upon its
release, the album received top reviews from heavy metal magazines
such as Rock Hard, Kerrang! and Metal Forces. Arise is considered
Sepultura's finest hour among longtime fans. While the music on
Arise was mostly in the same death/thrash style as their previous
album, Beneath the Remains, it was clear that the Sepultura sound
was acquiring an experimental edge. The album presented their first
incursions with industrial music, hardcore punk and latin
percussion.
