Comedy, High School / Characters: 12m, 16f, 20+ non-gender / The
story of Voltaire's Candide, as adapted in 2 hilarious hours by a
quirky amateur theatre group. Candide, the unlucky innocent, is
lead through a series of outlandish, side-splitting misadventures
that span nine countries, in order to be reunited with his
childhood love. Along his journey he encounters shipwrecks and
pirates, war, passion, riches beyond the comprehension of mortal
man, death by fire, hanging and impalement, Inquisitions,
earthquakes, volcanoes, revolution, slave traders, brothels, and
sheep... lots of sheep. Throughout his Job-like escapades, he is
forced to question his optimistic outlook: is life a cruel or kind
expedition? In the end, optimism and good prevail. Candide
discovers that the best of all possible worlds is a simple life
along-side his true love, and the best example of optimism is a
farmer who plants his garden and trusts that it will grow. The play
is narrated by Pangloss, the philosopher of Optimism, Paquette, the
generous chambermaid, and the Old Woman with No Name and Only One
Buttock, who has only one buttock. Each lends their unique
perspective to the activities. Candide is a play for directors who
like big casts and small budgets. A unit set with simplified,
cartoon-like designs best suits the fast paced action. Of the many
parts, all but seven can be doubled, and nearly all the parts are
gender neutral, thanks to a convenient disclaimer in the prologue.
DCI Brendan Moran, world-weary veteran of 1970s Ireland, is
recuperating from a near fatal car crash when a murder is reported
at Charnford Abbey. The abbot and his monks are strangely
uncooperative, but when a visitor from the Vatican arrives and an
ancient relic goes missing the truth behind Charnford's pact of
silence threatens to expose not only the abbey's haunted secrets
but also the spirits of Moran's own troubled past . . .

AD367: Britannia. The Southern Provinces are shaken by the most
ferocious barbarian invasion in living memory. Marius, youngest
member of the Corinium council, is caught in a web of intrigue when
it transpires that the traitor masterminding the barbarian alliance
is his parents' murderer, the feared and hated Imperial Notary,
Paulus Catena - The Chain... Narrowly escaping death in a bloody
skirmish with an Irish war band, Marius is forced to undertake a
hazardous journey to the mysterious Isle of Mona in a desperate
gamble to destroy the alliance. He is accompanied by the fugitive
slave and gladiator, Fraomar of the Alamanni, a man the emperor
wants captured at any price. Hunted not only by the savage Irish
invaders but also by a team of elite imperial troops, Marius soon
discovers that there are much higher stakes to play for than their
own lives. . . This is part one of The Chronicles of Britannia, a
tale of heroism, loss, war and sacrifice as Rome's westernmost
provinces are swept inexorably to the very brink of the Dark Ages.
