Steven Seagal reprises his role as Seattle undercover cop Elijah
Kane in this action thriller from the True Justice series. In this
instalment, Kane is recruited by the CIA, who want to use his
former sniper skills on a top secret mission to assassinate a high
profile target. But what should have been a fairly straightforward
mission soon becomes complicated when Kane and his team start
taking fire from the members of a heavily armed street gang.
The development of self-operating machines is the foundation of
modern manufacturing. This current manufacturing environment is
based on automation and smart machines that have the ability to
make things with a level of accuracy and consistency that humans
cannot match. In order to maximize efficiency, engineers and
managers need to change their outlooks, processes and strategies
and as a result, adopt new methods and management systems.
The authors demonstrate what is needed by first presenting a brief
history of manufacturing and the changes we have already seen and
then make their way into the current manufacturing environment.
Topics covered include supply chain management, product streams,
the role of automation in the supply chain, the relationships
between machines and people in automated product streams (looking
at what machines do best and what humans do best), variation and
quality control, statistical process control, the flow of
information in a supply chain and how all of these elements are
effected by new technologies and need to be changed to allow for
maximum efficiency as we move more toward automation in factories.
*Discover the impact of new technologies on the future shape on the
manufacturing industry
*Excellent examples used throughout to demonstrate each idea and
process
*Includes access to a Companion website with lectures, slides,
tutorials, dynamic models and much more
This book breaks new ground by systematically examining China's
capitalist transformation through several comparative lenses. The
great majority of research on China to date has consisted of
single-country studies. This is the result of the methodological
demands of studying China and a sense of the country's
distinctiveness due to its grand size and long history. The moniker
Middle Kingdom, a direct translation of the Chinese-language word
for China, is one of the most prominent symbols of the country's
supposed uniqueness.
Composed of contributions from leading specialists on China's
political economy, this volume demonstrates the benefits of
systematically comparing China with other countries, including
France, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, India, Brazil, and
South Africa. Doing so puts the People's Republic in a light not
available through other approaches, and it provides a chance to
consider political theories by including an important case too
often left out of studies.
This volume offers systematic analysis of China's growing
engagement in global governance institutions over the past three
decades. During this period, China has gone from outsider to
observer to insider. The volume is based on studies of Chinese
involvement in a wide cross section of regimes, including trade,
finance, intellectual property rights, foreign aid, and climate
change. The contributions show that China's participation in global
governance reflects the mutually interactive processes of China's
own socialization into the global community and the simultaneous
adaptation of global institutions and actors to China's growing
activism. Both China and the international system are internally
complex. Hence, Chinese engagement varies across economic regimes,
yielding different results in terms of Chinese compliance, its
influence on regimes, and the extent of cooperation and conflict in
addressing challenges in international society. The chapters reveal
that China is neither purely a savior nor scofflaw of the global
economic system, and while China is a defender of the status quo in
some areas, it is a reformer in others, and occasionally a
revisionist in still other spheres. A detailed analysis of many
areas of global governance, this volume will be essential reading
for students and scholars of international relations, Chinese
studies and global governance.

In 1204, brothers Alexios and David Komnenos became the unwitting
founders of the Empire of Trebizond, a successor state to the
Byzantine Empire that emerged after Crusaders sacked
Constantinople. Trebizond, which stretched along the coast of the
Black Sea, outlasted numerous rivals and invaders until its fall to
the Ottoman Turks in 1461. Though this empire has fascinated
writers from Cervantes to Dorothy Dunnett, few Trapezuntine
writings survive. This volume presents translations from the Greek
of two crucial primary sources published together for the first
time: On the Emperors of Trebizond and Encomium on Trebizond. In
the fourteenth century, Michael Panaretos, the emperor's personal
secretary, penned the only extant history of the ruling dynasty,
including key details about foreign relations. The encomium by
Bessarion (1403-1472), here in English for the first time, praises
the author's native city and retells Trapezuntine history from
antiquity to his own moment. It provides enlightening perspectives
on Byzantine identity and illuminating views of this major trading
hub along the Silk Road.
In this timely work, Scott Kennedy documents the rising influence
of business, both Chinese and foreign, on national public policy in
China.
China's shift to a market economy has made businesses more
sensitive to their bottom line and has seen the passage of
thousands of laws and regulations that directly affect firms'
success. Companies have become involved in a tug of war with the
government and with each other to gain national policy advantages,
often setting the agenda, providing alternative options, and
pressing for a favored outcome.
Kennedy's comparison of lobbying in the steel, consumer
electronics, and software industries shows that although companies
operate in a common political system, economic circumstances shape
the nature and outcome of lobbying. Factors such as private or
state ownership, size, industry concentration, and technological
sophistication all affect industry activism.
Based on over 300 in-depth interviews with company executives,
business association representatives, and government officials,
this study identifies a wide range of national economic policies
influenced by lobbying, including taxes, technical standards, and
intellectual property rights. These findings have significant
implications for how we think about Chinese politics and economics,
as well as government-business relations in general.
