'Scotty was a huge part of our journey coming together as a team'
Gareth Southgate, England manager In Never Give In, former Royal
Marine Major Scotty Mills blends personal experiences from his
remarkable life and career with inspirational advice and insights
to provide his 12 Commando Rules for Life that could help anyone to
do better and reach their targets. A sudden downpour while Scotty
Mills was walking down a street in South London sent him diving for
cover into the nearest shop. It turned out to be a recruitment
centre for the Royal Marines and, after a few minutes' conversation
while waiting for the rain to stop, Scotty was hooked and signed up
to join the elite force. It changed his life and set him on a new
direction that would end up with him leading the Marines on
operations around the world, becoming an Olympic flag bearer in
2012 and dining at Buckingham Palace with the Queen and the royal
family. Scotty shares his lessons of performance and resilience
with the reader, inviting them into the secrets of elite
culture. His compelling story is one that combines tragedy
with remarkable insight about the power of human inspiration.
Scotty has worked with many of our nation's top sports teams,
helping them to achieve their goals, and in Never Give In he shares
his methods with his readers to guide them to peak performance in
all aspects of their life and career.Â
- Many Americans alive today who experienced the Great Hurricane of
1938 firsthand remember the day as the most terrifying of their
lives.- SUDDEN SEA is an enthralling addition to the disaster
narrative genre, which includes such megahits as "The Perfect
Storm, Into Thin Air, and "Isaac's Storm.- The Great Hurricane of
1938 was the most financially destructive storm on record. The
estimated cost in today's dollars would exceed $47 billion. Only 5
percent of the losses were covered by insurance.- The hardcover
edition has over 35,000 copies in print to date and is in its 3rd
printing.- Paperback publication will coincide with the peak of the
summer 2004 hurricane season.
RCMP Superintendent "Scotty" Gardiner's captivating memoir
reveals what truly goes on behind the scenes in local and
international criminal and civil investigations - from solving
small-town break-ins to busting multi-national drug operations, and
from foiling historical coin counterfeiting to making a
controversial money-for-bodies deal with serial killer Clifford
Olson.
IN THE MIND OF A MOUNTIE provides deep insight into the thought
processes, self-discipline and integrity required to be an
exemplary policeman. "There is no LUCK in investigation," Gardiner
emphasizes. "Instead you must focus on PREPARATION, so you will
recognize OPPORTUNITY."
With masterful storytelling, Scotty Gardiner's IN THE MIND OF A
MOUNTIE brings vividly to life the role of a policeman and
investigator in late 20th-century Canadian society.
-- ENDORSEMENTS FROM EXPERTS --
"A refreshing page-turner as Scotty leads from one crime
investigation to the next, while offering shrewd insights into the
nature and habits of career criminals and RCMP officers alike. His
is a broadly sympathetic view of the human condition, seen through
the eyes of a very smart and experienced RCMP officer."
- Geoff Machin, MD, PhD, FRCPC, Emeritus Prof. of Pathology, U. of
Alberta
"A remarkably rich and personal memoir, full of stories that
illustrate both the routine and complex in police work. The book is
also a testament to how a combination of hard work, intellectual
imagination, integrity, and self-discipline served Scotty well as a
Mountie in postings across this vast country. It is an account of a
life's work that needs to be told, especially in these times when
the Force seems in disarray and those values compromised."
- John McLaren, Emeritus Prof. of Law, U. of Victoria
"A compelling story told in a most readable manner. Highly
recommended for all ages - Scotty's life is the stuff of legends
and deserves to be read widely."
- Hamish Simpson, former head of Glenlyon School, Pearson College,
and Upper Canada College Preparatory School
Emerging technologies have enhanced the learning capabilities and
opportunities in modern school systems. To continue the effective
development of such innovations, the intended users must be taken
into account. End-User Considerations in Educational Technology
Design is a pivotal reference source for the latest scholarly
material on usability testing techniques and user-centered design
methodologies in the development of technological tools for
learning environments. Highlighting a range of pertinent topics
such as multimedia learning, human-computer interaction, and online
learning, this book is ideally designed for academics, researchers,
school administrators, professionals, and practitioners interested
in the design of optimized educational technologies.
It's 2004; three years after the attacks on New York and DC, Saddam
Hussein is dead and the hunt for Osama bin Laden goes on. But there

Monster who killed his brother; and as luck would have it, Dach has
a cousin who works for the Project. Welcome to a world of spies,
genetically enhanced soldiers and secrets. Forget what you thought
you knew about the USA. Welcome, to the Project.
This book examines the context, motivation and current status of
biometric systems based on the palmprint, with a specific focus on
touchless and less-constrained systems. It covers new technologies
in this rapidly evolving field and is one of the first
comprehensive books on palmprint recognition systems. It discusses
the research literature and the most relevant industrial
applications of palmprint biometrics, including the low-cost
solutions based on webcams. The steps of biometric recognition are
described in detail, including acquisition setups, algorithms, and
evaluation procedures. Constraints and limitations of current
palmprint recognition systems are analyzed and discussed. The
authors also introduce innovative methods for touchless and
less-constrained palmprint recognition, with the aim to make
palmprint biometrics easier to use in practical, daily-life
applications, and overcome the typical constraints and limitations
described. Touchless Palmprint Recognition Systems targets
professionals and researchers working in biometrics, image
processing and three-dimensional reconstruction. Advanced-level
students studying biometrics and computer science will also find
this material valuable as a secondary text book or reference.

For author M. Scotty Lamkin, a conventional lifestyle at a
traditional job was a horribly mundane way to approach life. On
January 16, 1979, he arrived in Alaska with fifty dollars in his
pocket, two duffel bags, and a backpack. A long way from his
Kentucky homeland, Lamkin journeyed to Alaska expecting adventure,
and he was not disappointed. Chance Is the Providence of
Adventurers narrates many of Lamkin's true-life escapades in
Alaska's remote bush country.
In this half-travelogue, half-memoir, Lamkin tells the sometimes
funny, sometimes deadly, stories of his experiences as a
professional guide and adventurer-waking up a brown bear at close
range, sinking a boat in frigid Alaska waters, crashing bush
planes, throwing rocks at bears, and experiencing some of the most
beautiful landscapes on Earth.
"Chance Is the Providence of Adventurers" offers a glimpse into
the flavor of Alaskan life, provides a firsthand view of the
wonders of untamed nature and wildlife, and demonstrates the
results of taking a chance to change your life.
The first book in the newly created book series, Computer-Aided
Drug Discovery and Design, focuses on the computational aspects of
early drug discovery, drug target identification, and validation.
It revises current classical paradigms in target and
phenotypic-based drug design with still ingrained approximations
and concepts and discusses the research in the new network approach
concept that include kinetic selectivity and metabolic analysis.
Many often-overlooked approximations and concepts in drug discovery
are fully covered. Drug Target Selection and Validation includes
both introductory sections and research-based sections to be of use
to both students and research scientists in drug discovery, design,
kinetics and metabolic analysis. Pharmaceutical scientists,
pharmaceutics, drug developers, pharmacologists, biomedical
researchers in computer science, medicinal chemists, and precision
medicine developers benefit from the information provided. The book
concludes with a chapter on chemical and structural databases.
This simple, gospel-centered, 365-day Bible reading plan guides
children ages 6-12 through the most important passages of the
Bible, helping them see and appreciate the big-picture storyline of
Scripture.
