Darren Aronofsky directs this elegaic time-travelling odyssey, in which Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz star in a series of storylines about a man's struggle to save the woman he loves. In one storyline, 16th-century Spanish conquistador Tomas Creo (Jackman) sets out to find the fabled Tree of Life in order to save his queen, Isabel (Weisz) from the Inquisition. In a modern-day storyline, Jackman is Tommy, a scientist desperately searching for the medical breakthrough that will save the life of his cancer-stricken wife, Izzie (Weisz). In a future timeline, Tom (Jackman) is a 26th-century astronaut travelling through deep space - and finally beginning to grasp the mysteries of life that have consumed him for so long.

Supernatural horror set in the Wild West. A band of brave pioneers sets out to find and recover a family of settlers that appears to have been abducted following an attack on a frontier homestead. Expecting the offenders to be the usual posse of hostile natives, the group prepares for routine battle. Would-be ballerina Sara (Julia Stiles) is forced to abandon her dancing plans when she leaves her smalltown home and moves to live with her estranged father in the dangerous South Side of Chicago. As a white girl in a predominantly black neighbourhood, Sara finds it a struggle to settle in, but when she meets black fellow-dancer Derek (Sean Patrick Thomas), she begins to feel much happier. The two set out together to realise their dreams, but as their relationship develops it brings forth major opposition from both their friends and their families, putting their future as a couple in jeopardy.
