Introduction to Sociology provides students with a carefully
curated selection of readings that demonstrate how everyday human
interactions construct our global social world. The collection
offers students an array of unique perspectives on foundational
sociological concepts and an engaging look into real-world issues
and the global impacts of social life. The text is divided into 13
chapters. The opening chapter provides students with a general
introduction to sociology and describes three basic types of
sociological traditions. Additional chapters introduce readers to
sociological research methods, concepts related to culture, the
idea of socialization, and perceptions of deviance and crime. They
explore readings on social stratification, race as a social
construct, contemporary constructions of gender and sexuality, and
the role and function of marriage and family in modern times.
Education, politics, globalization, population, and urbanization
are discussed within the context of sociology. The book closes with
a chapter dedicated to social change and social movements. Written
to help students understand how sociological theories can support
their understanding of our social world, Introduction to Sociology
is an ideal resource for foundational courses in discipline.
Through a collection of carefully selected articles, Political
Sociology: Readings on Power, Politics, State, and Society helps
students analyze and understand events in the political and social
world through the lens of power structures and the distribution of
power in society. Chapter 1 examines the components of a strong
civic culture. Chapter 2 discusses the processes of elite formation
in major industrialized countries like the United States, Germany,
France, Britain, and Japan. Chapter 3 examines whether presidents
are held responsible for the mistakes of their agencies and what
the media's role is in shaping that responsibility. In Chapter 4,
readers learn about the relations between states and women from the
sociological perspectives of democracy and development. Additional
chapters address racial politics in the Missouri Bootheel region;
how big technology can serve as a symbol of state power, wealth,
and political authority; and the concept of false consciousness and
its impact on the lives of individuals. The final chapter discusses
the history of voter inequality and voter suppression. Thoroughly
modern in approach, Political Sociology is an exemplary resource
for courses in the social sciences.
The author examines parental responsibility for their children's
development. The authors then summarize the functionalist
perspective of deviance, the function of crimes, and how these
perspectives have influenced the development of Emile Durkheim's
work like anomie. The authors then turn their attention to fear of
crime in regard to social order. The authors then examine how the
Tennessean newspaper The City Paper and its readers' comments frame
the coverage of the Kurdish Pride Gang. The authors then provide an
insight into pluralism and politicized religion. I then assess and
compare the theories of differential association, low self-control,
and Black's theory of social control for explaining deviance. The
authors then focus on fear and risk perceptions of terrorism. I
then enlighten the account of communication media technology and
how it influences culture, control, as well as deviance. The
authors then address how the development of technology has affected
the nature of deviance and social control and what is the impact of
media use among the young children. Finally, the authors examine
how the sociological imagination of the individuals living in
southeastern Turkey is constructed through the movie, The Bliss.
The Native American Contest Powwow introduces Cultural Tethering
Theory to understand the importance of the contest powwow and what
it means to participants, carrying on the beauty of Native American
culture. The book addresses the concepts of culture, cultural
change, acculturation, assimilation, and how this competitive
dancing ritual aligns with and differs from traditional sports.
Authors Steven Aicinena and Sebahattin Ziyanak go on to explain why
modern Native American cultures are experiencing an erosion of
traditional values, a rapid loss of traditional languages, changes
in social organization, limited opportunity to learn
culturally-valued knowledge, reduced opportunity to observe
culturally appropriate behavior, and the influence of technology.
The book also examines Native American identity and who can
legitimately claim to be a Native American under current laws and
customs. Additional topics addressed include blood quantum,
cultural knowledge, participation, being Indian, and playing
Indian. Finally, the authors describe the difference between being
Native American and playing Indian in powwow and pseudo-cultural
powwow environments.
Analyzing Delinquency among Kurdish Adolescents uses Hirschi's
social bonding theory to examine the mediating effect of social
bonding on delinquent behavior among Kurdish teenagers, who were
used as a case study to test the usefulness of this theory. In this
study, participants were selected from one Gulen movement
affiliated school and one public or non-Gulen affiliated school.
This study sheds light on Turkish society's chaotic conditions in
southeastern Turkey, particularly with respect to Kurdish
adolescents' involvement in the Kurdish Worker's Party (PKK). There
is a lack of research regarding how Kurdish adolescents are
involved in delinquent behavior as portrayed in popular Turkish
media. Social bonding theory, developed and mainly tested in
American and western European contexts, needs additional
exploration of its efficiency in a nonwestern, especially Islamic,
society. Thus, this book helps to better understand the factors
that influence crime and delinquency in developing, culturally
diverse social structures. Scholars in sociology, psychology, and
criminology, as well as in the fields of political science, Middle
Eastern studies, and education, will greatly benefit from this
study.
The environmental studies about natural resource issues are often
studied as conflicts; this book is carefully designed to expound on
how resolutions are negotiated and maintained. A number of factors
influence how conflicts are framed and how resolutions are
determined regarding fracking, shared waters and environmental
threats. This book explores the power, community activism, and
politics regarding natural resources. Decisions often ignore
ecological and social sustainability stewardship needs. By
understanding how socio-political dynamics affect policy and
negotiation, this book also contributes to the understanding of how
natural resource policies are negotiated. It illuminates social
inequalities between rural and urban populations.
This book focuses on the sociological dynamics of two of the most
important Turkish immigration waves to the United States. It
describes the wave of early Turkish immigration during the early
19th century and the most recent from the late 20th century.
Although a few historians have studied the topic (Karpat, 1985;
Acehan, 2005; Micallef, 2004; and Akcapar, 2009), this study
utilizes extant international migration and adaptation theories to
explore issues related to Turkish immigration to the United States
and the outcome explains Turkish immigration to the United States
from a distinctly sociological point of view. This book also
enlightens the concepts of identity formation across Turkish
American generations and analyzes vital distinctions between first
and second generation immigrants with regard to their
acculturation. Moreover, this book contributes to discussions on
cultural tourism, international business relations, and the
cultural market. In addition to that, the meaning of race, the
existing theories of race, and how the construction of whiteness
are points of interest in this book. Finally, the emphasis on
intermarriage, religion, and Turkish identity are analyzed.
