Alzheimer disease (AD) has become the most common form of dementia in industrialized countries and represents an increasing burden at the economic, social and medical level. In discussing both the biological aspects of AD as well as the cognitive functions involved, Alzheimer Disease - Neuropsychology and Pharmacology presents a comprehensive picture of the pathology and approaches to diagnosis and treatment. Basic research including animal models, molecular and genetic aspects is also taken into consideration. In part I, the biological correlates of AD are discussed. In part II the neuropsychological aspects such as cognitive impairment, loss of functional autonomy and emergence of neuropsychiatric disturbances of AD are outlined. In part III, strategies for effective treatment and prevention of AD are discussed. This book will be a useful source of information for clinicians as well as researchers in the area of neuropharmacology.
The third edition of this successful textbook has been completely updated throughout and includes new chapters on electrophysiological tests, biological markers, global staging measures, and management of neuropsychiatric symptoms. There has been steady progress in our understanding of the natural history, prognostic factors and treatments for Alzheimer's disease since the previous edition of this textbook was published in 1999. The chapters deal with the full spectrum of populations at risk, persons in prodromal stages, and patients from mild to severe and even terminal stages. The contributors are opinion leaders from North America and Europe, which gives the book an internationally balanced outlook. This new edition will be essential reading for a wide range of clinical neuroscientists who manage patients with this challenging disease.

Given the increased attention by clinicians, researchers and the pharmaceutical industry to the management and treatment of dementia not only in the elderly but also in increasingly younger populations, the demands for effective evidence-based pharmaceutical control of dementia and quantitative assessment of outcomes have increased. Since some first steps in the early 1960's (Arthur C. Walsh and the anticoagulation-psychotherapy regime for senile dementia) to the controversial if landmark paper of Summers and colleagues, to the most recent trials, it is clear both that much progress has been made, and that much remains to be done. This book is written to take stock of what is now usefully known, and to speculate on directions for the future.

The second edition of Management of Dementia combines a balanced review of the latest knowledge and research in this area with practical guidance based on the authors' considerable personal experience in dementia care. Topics include:
Directed at practitioners who want to practice evidence-based medicine without losing sight of the patient, this volumr is designed to ensure physicians are dispensing the most appropriate pharmacology while also using other non-pharmacological treatments to their optimum effect. Concise and easy to read, the book provides readers with a full knowledge of the evolution of modern dementia care as well as the basis for understanding new developments as they occur."
Covering the spectrum of cognitive decline in aging using illustrative cases, from mild impairment to dementia, this set of case studies offers a wide-ranging guide for trainees and clinicians. This second volume includes updated research diagnostic criteria and details of new imaging technology, including novel biomarkers such as PET amyloid and tau, to inform readers in clinical practice. Each case includes a clinical history, examination findings and special investigations, followed by diagnosis and discussion, to encourage clinical reasoning, integrative thinking, and problem-solving skills. To reinforce diagnostic skills, the cases include careful analysis of individual presenting patterns and up-to-date information on diagnostic classification and tools. The reader will be able to distinguish patients who need reassurance, closer follow-up or immediate referral to specialized services. With an international authorship, this book is for trainees and clinicians in neurology, psychiatry and neuropsychology.
Vascular cognitive impairment is the second most common cause of dementia after Alzheimer's disease and is expected to grow in prevalence with the aging global population. The purpose of this authoritative book is to give a broad clinical perspective on vascular cognitive impairment and thus create a foundation for the implementation of good dementia care. The book focuses on pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment and prevention. It demonstrates the underlying causes of the disorder, such as the manner in which vascular risk-factors influence the onset of vascular cognitive impairment. The concept of mixed forms of vascular dementia, Alzheimer's dementia and other vascular diseases is discussed as well as the influence of vascular changes with regard to the onset of Alzheimer's disease. The detailed section on pathophysiology will enhance clinicians' understanding of this complex disorder. Finally there is a section on pharmacological and neuropsychological treatment of cognitive and psychiatric symptoms.
Dementia is amongst the greatest challenges facing the medical profession as the population ages. Accurate diagnosis is essential as many rarer forms of the disease are treatable if recognized early. This collection of case studies from around the world illustrates both common and unusual causes of dementia, emphasizing clinical reasoning, integrative thinking and problem-solving skills. Each case consists of a clinical history, examination findings and special investigations, followed by diagnosis and discussion. The aim is to reinforce diagnostic skills through careful analysis of individual presenting patterns, and to guide treatment decisions, using state-of-the-art diagnostic classification and tools. The reader will be able to distinguish patients who need reassurance, closer follow-up or immediate referral to specialized services. Written and edited by internationally recognized experts in dementia, these case studies will inform and challenge clinicians at all stages of their careers.
