This volume is dedicated to the eminent Russian mathematician Igor Borisovich Simonenko on the occasion of his 70th birthday. The contributions are written by leading experts and present the state of the art in a number of areas originally initiated in pioneer works by I. B. Simonenko. Among the topics covered are Fredholm theory for singular integral and convolution operators, estimates for singular integral operators on Carleson curves acting in Lp spaces with variable exponents, the finite section method for band-dominated and Toeplitz operators, SzegA-type theorems, and the averaging method for nonlinear equations. The book testifies to the wide mathematical interest of I. B. Simonenko and includes a biography, his list of publications and a list of his Ph.D. students.

Muskhelishvili, F.D. Gakhov, N.P. Vekua and their numerous students and followers and is marked by the fact that it relied principally on methods of complex analysis. In the early 1960s, the development of this theory received a powerful impulse from the ideas and methods of functional analysis that were then brought into the picture. Its modern architecture is due to a constellation of brilliant mathemati- cians and the scientific collectives that they produced (S.G. Mikhlin, M.G. Krein, B.V. Khvedelidze, 1. Gohberg, LB. Simonenko, A. Devinatz, H. Widom, R.G. Dou- glas, D. Sarason, A.P. Calderon, S. Prossdorf, B. Silbermann, and others). In the ensuing period, the Fredholm theory of singular integral operators with a finite index was completed in its main aspects in wide classes of Banach and Frechet spaces.

This volume contains twenty-one solicited articles by speakers at the IWOTA 2009 workshop, ranging from expository surveys to original research papers, each carefully refereed.The contributions reflect recent developments in operator theory and its applications. Consistent with the topics of recent IWOTA meetings, IWOTA 2009 was designed as a comprehensive, inclusive conference covering all aspects of theoretical and applied operator theory, ranging from classical analysis, differential and integral equations, complex and harmonic analysis to mathematical physics, mathematical systems and control theory, signal processing and numerical analysis.
