This book provides an edited text, introduction, and the first
English translation of a central document in the history of
religious coercion in late antiquity: Severus of Minorca's Letter
on the Conversion of the Jews. The Letter describes the forced
conversion of the Jews of Minorca to Christianity in AD 418,
allegedly under the influence of St. Stephen's relics. Although
ostensibly a hagiographical work, the Letter is fundamentally an
anti-Jewish document, and therein lies its interest for historians.
It offers a fascinating perspective on Jewish-Christian relations
in a Mediterranean town, and on the motives for religious
intolerance in the unsettled age of the Germanic invasions. In
addition, its wealth of information about a diaspora Jewish
community in the Western empire makes it unique among the surviving
sources.
This is the first complete critical edition of Severos of
Alexandreia's Progymnasmata. In an appendix: the first complete
critical collection of the Testimonia and Fragmenta of the Sophists
Hadrianos of Tyrus and Kallinikos of Petrai, as well as the editio
princeps of the anonymous Ethopoiie Meretrix redempta .

These pioneering Lives are central sources for the major Christian monastic figures from St Antony, who died in 356, to St Benedict (c. 480-547). They also shed light on the beliefs and values of their celebrated authors. Athanasius' Life of Antony reveals the man who many believe was the first to set out into the Egyptian desert to pursue the path of poverty, abstinence and solitary prayer. St Jerome fought for the cause of chastity and asceticism in writing about Paul of Thebes, Hilarion and Malchus, while in his Life of Martin Sulpicius Severus described the achievements of a man who combined the roles of monk, bishop and missionary. Almost two hundred years later, Pope Gregory the Great in his Dialogues focused above all on St Benedict, whose Rule became the template for every subsequent form of monasticism. Full of vivid incidents and astonishing miracles, all these works proved hugely popular and influential and also inspired much of the visual imagery of the Middle Ages.
St Martin the Bishop of Tours is a saint from France from the 5th
century A.D. He was a solider in the Roman army till he was
attracted to the monastic life. He was later ordained a priest then
a bishop of the city of Tours. The Coptic Church celebrates his
feast on the 14th of Hatour. All Time Heroes from all Times, is a
series that we plan to publish for a long time. This series
presents the lives of some of the church saints and heroes of faith
from the time of Jesus till today. Some of these books will be
printed others will only be available in Kindle format.
