When one speaks of sociology, places such as the US, UK, Germany, and France come to mind. To western or even eastern students of social sciences, the very idea that outside Europe and America one could come across sociological debates or theoretical debates on socio-cultural issues comes as a surprise, to say the least. In this work, the author presents the work of Allama M.T. Jafari, an Iranian, contemporary social thinker who worked within the parameters of Primordial School of Social Theory. This work is an attempt to enrich the existing literature on comparative sociology and social philosophy.
Spurred by the commitment to continue the critical work that Malcolm X began, this volume analyses the enduring significance of his life, work, and religious philosophy. Bringing together thirteen different scholars from six different countries, Malcolm X: From Political Escataology to Religious Revolutionary demonstrates why Malcolm X is still vitally important fifty years after his death.
This book examines the significance of Malcolm X as a social theorist. Though Malcolm X has been studied and written about extensively, this is the first book to offer an in-depth look at his contributions to critical social theory. Through analyzing Malcolm X's views on race, religion, academia, philosophy, and politics, Reimagining Malcolm X provides a new conceptualization of this important thinker and activist.
This book is an analysis of an Iranian philosopher's engagement with a British philosopher. The author compares the ideas of these philosophers within the context of European and Iranian intellectual traditions. This is the first book of its kind, as no one has yet looked at Allama Jafari's thought in relation to Sir Bertrand Russell's. East and West will be a useful work for anyone who is interested in comparative philosophical and sociological studies.
In Frantz Fanon and Emancipatory Social Theory: A View from the Wretched, Dustin J. Byrd and Seyed Javad Miri bring together a collection of essays by a variety of scholars who explore the lasting influence of Frantz Fanon, renowned psychiatrist, revolutionary, and social theorist. Fanon 's work not only gave voice to the "wretched" in the Algerian War of Independence (1954-1962), but also shaped the radical resistance to colonialism, empire, and racism throughout much of the world. His seminal works, such as Black Skin, White Masks, and The Wretched of the Earth, were read by The Black Panther Party in the United States, anti-imperialists in Africa and Asia, and anti-monarchist revolutionaries in the Middle East. Today, many revolutionaries and scholars have returned to Fanon 's work, as it continues to shed light on the nature of colonial domination, racism, and class oppression. Contributors include: Syed Farid Alatas, Rose Brewer, Dustin J. Byrd, Sean Chabot, Richard Curtis, Nigel C. Gibson, Ali Harfouch, Timothy Kerswell, Seyed Javad Miri, Mumia Abu-Jamal, Pramod K. Nayar, Elena Flores RuÃz, Majid Sharifi, Mohamed Imran Mohamed Taib and Esmaeil Zeiny.
In Ali Shariati and the Future of Social Theory, Dustin J. Byrd and Seyed Javad Miri bring together a collection of essays by a variety of scholars who explore the lasting influence of the Iranian sociologist and revolutionary, Ali Shariati. Thought to be the most important intellectual behind the Iranian Revolution of 1979, these essays engage in a future-oriented remembrance of Shariati's life and praxis, with the practical attempt to clarify, expand, and apply his liberational Islamic thought to modern conditions.
Islamism and Post-Islamism analyzes political thought in Iran since 1979. Seyed Javad Miri engages with one of the seminal thinkers in contemporary Iranian politics, Allama Jafari, on key relevant concepts. In this book, Miri discuses several important topics: .Redrawing the map of political thought in an islamist era .Governmentality in the balance of gnosticism .Religion, politics and other sagas .Changes in Iranian social life .The principle of divine authority in modern Iran"
Humanity at large has arrived at a critical point in its destiny. The consensus of stupidity has reached its zenith in our time to a grandiose proportion in all fields of human praxis. To be or not to be is not anymore an issue for contemporary human person as s/he has lost touch with the wonderful possibilities. The issue at hand for contemporary self is how to get by and ask for what's next. In other words, our system of societal organization has turned so alienated from lofty concepts of good, beauty, just and truth that realities explained by Jung or Maslow such as individuation or Peak- Experiences seem so foreign and inaccessible to us because we have become so deeply accustomed to inauthentic lifestyles which are devoid of ultimate realities. I believe that sociology is a kind of theology with a democratic orientation. While theology is focused on what God envisions about the destiny of humanity, sociology, on the other hand, it is the reasoning of human being on what the destiny could provide for her/him in a world that is really unknown and unbeknown to this thrown-away Dasein.
The book is an attempt to explore the ideas of Ku Hung-Ming from China from a primordial point of departure. He was a great intellectual but less known in global sociology circle. Here we have attempted to rediscover his legacy in a global context for sociologists and all students of humanities. His critiques against rationality of eurocentric nature and his fourfold categorizations of rationality is one of the most amazing stories of world sociology which needs to be explored. Although Ku occupies a very significant position in the history of ideas in China but his intellectual importance has not been yet discovered outside China. Miri's work is a unique contribution to the field of comparative sociology and philosophy.
In contemporary sociology, social philosophy and social theory Goffman and Giddens occupy very significant positions. But their works have been less debated in terms of existential concerns. In this work the author has attempted to look at this dimension by clearly making a distinction between continental existentialist philosophy and what he terms as existencialism. In other words, the author seems to suggest that we have universal existential concerns which have not been addressed within the frame of existentialist position, on the one hand, and we are, on the other hand, able to approach the discourses of Goffman and Giddens from the position of Existentialicism.
Erich Fromm's body of work, written more than 50 years ago, was prophetic of the contemporary moment: Increasingly, global society is threatened by the many-headed monster of corporate greed, neo-liberalism, nihilism, extreme fundamentalist beliefs, and their resulting effects on the natural world and the lived lives of people. Fromm clearly warned us of the peril of the misuse of technology and the destructive nature of man's perverse desire to possess, control and/or destroy. Through his theories of having vs. being, the importance of hope as active resistance, and his notion of freedom as the capacity to love self, and others, Fromm encouraged his readers to cultivate biophilic ways of being in the world that will counter and heal the impending necrophilic plunder of man's hubris. This multi-authored volume sheds new light on Fromm's forgotten role in the formation of contemporary thought through an engaging variety of reflexive and historical narratives from fields of sociology, clinical psychology, political science, critical theory of religion and education. Key concepts from his body of work are interpreted and expressed in ways that offer hopeful and humane alternatives to the present global conditions of despair, greed and depersonalization.
