"Dutch Art" explores developments in art, art history, art criticism, and cultural history of the Netherlands from the artists' workshops for the Utrecht Dom in 1475 to the latest movements of the 1990s. it is lavishly illustrated with 147 black-and-white photographs and 16 pages in full color. More than 100 internationally recognized scholars, museum professionals, artists, and art critics contributed signed essays to this monumental work, including historians, sociologists, and literary historians.

Approximately one third of the "Encyclopedia"is devoted to biography and another third offers narrative art history; the balance focuses on specific subjects, with many artists, places, events and stylistic arguments examined from multiple viewpoints. Consequently, readers will find in the "Encyclopedia" many ways of looking at art and gain insights into how art was inspired, created, and perceived in the Netherlands throughout history. The emphasis on context is especially important for understanding 20th century Dutch artistic movements that were influenced by foreign developments but retain their distinctive Dutch identity.
