This book introduces characteristic features of the protein
structure prediction (PSP) problem. It focuses on systematic
selection and improvement of the most appropriate metaheuristic
algorithm to solve the problem based on a fitness landscape
analysis, rather than on the nature of the problem, which was the
focus of methodologies in the past. Protein structure prediction is
concerned with the question of how to determine the
three-dimensional structure of a protein from its primary sequence.
Recently a number of successful metaheuristic algorithms have been
developed to determine the native structure, which plays an
important role in medicine, drug design, and disease prediction.
This interdisciplinary book consolidates the concepts most relevant
to protein structure prediction (PSP) through global non-convex
optimization. It is intended for graduate students from fields such
as computer science, engineering, bioinformatics and as a reference
for researchers and practitioners.
While paradigm-bound research has generated powerful insights in
international relations, it has fostered a tunnel vision that
hinders progress and widens the chasm between theory and policy. In
this important new book, Sil and Katzenstein draw upon recent
scholarship to illustrate the benefits of a more pragmatic and
eclectic style of research.
This volume explores the unanticipated consequences of emulating,
importing, or imposing new institutional models without
commensurate attention to the particular constellations of
interests, identities, norms, and social relations embedded in
local communities. Each chapter is organized around a common
problematic that has received only limited attention in the
literature on institutional change: the dilemmas of deploying the
rules, practices, and design of institutions that have been
imported or imposed from external environments in regions where
actors are more familiar with and find more legitimate locally
embedded norms, practices, social relations, and knowledge
structures. The volume strives to illustrate the analytic power of
the concept of 'syncretism, ' a concept that can be fruitfully
deployed to analyze common aspects of institutional change not
easily captured in existing frameworks.
Covers the fundamentals of power systems, including design,
analysis, market structure, and economic operations Discusses
performance of transmission lines with associated parameters,
determination of performance, and load flow analysis Reviews
residual generation/load imbalance as handled by the automatic
generation control (AGC) Includes different advanced technologies
like HTLS overhead conductor, XLPE Cable, vacuum/SF6 circuit
breaker, solid state relays and others Explores practical aspects
required for field level work like installation of cable network
for power distribution purpose, types of earthing, and tariff
mechanism
In the post-World War II era, the emergence of 'area studies'
marked a signal development in the social sciences. As the social
sciences evolved methodologically, however, many dismissed area
studies as favoring narrow description over general theory. Still,
area studies continues to plays a key, if unacknowledged, role in
bringing new data, new theories, and valuable policy-relevant
insights to social sciences. In Comparative Area Studies, three
leading figures in the field have gathered an international group
of scholars in a volume that promises to be a landmark in a
resurgent field. The book upholds two basic convictions: that
intensive regional research remains indispensable to the social
sciences and that this research needs to employ comparative
referents from other regions to demonstrate its broader relevance.
Comparative Area Studies (CAS) combines the context-specific
insights from traditional area studies and the logic of cross- and
inter-regional empirical research. This first book devoted to CAS
explores methodological rationales and illustrative applications
showing how area-based expertise can link into cutting-edge
comparative analytical frameworks.
While a cure for spinal cord injury remains elusive, the contents
of this volume convey a sense of progress towards this goal. More
has been learned about the primary and secondary consequences of
spinal cord injury and more is being understood about recovery
mechanisms that are intrinsic to the nervous system and that might
be further encouraged. Expanding the control capacity of uninjured
portions of the nervous system may be one approach to improving the
functional capabilities of those afflicted with this disorder. New
therapies in the form of transplantable cells that can encourage
growth or myelination or prevent secondary damage or that can
substitute for injured cells appear promising for future
applications. Genetic and tissue engineering studies give us
further hope, and under continuous development are novel drugs with
greater specificity and fewer detrimental effects and improved
delivery methods for such drugs.
The volume is organized into six topic sections, including I)
Strategies for Spinal Cord Injury Repair, II) Plasticity of the
Injured Spinal Cord: Retraining Neural Circuits to Promote Motor
Recovery, III) Impact of Neuroprosthetic Applications on Functional
Recovery, IV) Neurotrophins and Activity-Dependent Plasticity, V)
Candidate Cells for Transplantation into the Injured CNS and VI)
New Directions in Regeneration Research. Both clinical and
experimental animal studies are presented in the first three
sections, while predominantly basic research is the focus of the
second half of the book.
Sharatchandra Chattopadhyay has been the most popular writer of
novels and short stories in his native Bengaland in India at large.
Despite this, he remains unrecognized in the English speaking
world. Narasingha P. Sil fills this void by presenting a historical
critical assessment of his upbringing and the experiences that
influenced his masterful and magnificent work. The Life of
Sharatchandra Chattopadhyay rescues the authentic man, a
caste-conscious and patriarchal Brahmin of colonial Bengal, from
the cuckoo land of gratuitous praise and panegyric showered on the
Aparajeya Kathasilpi, the "invincible" wordsmith. The author
exposes Sharatchandra's innate conservative worldview and his
romantic platonic concept of human sexuality that inform all his
love stories. In many respects Sharatchandra resembles his
formidable European forbear, Jean Jacques Rousseau of Enlightenment
France. The concluding chapter of Sil's biographical study
introduces this pioneering comparison between the two men-a
veritable tour de force.
Aquaman's underwater kingdom is facing a medical threat. Luckily, a
sea witch offers him a rare plant to fight the sickness . . . in
exchange for a hefty price. But the Sea King soon discovers she
isn't just greedy. The old woman has locked the true crop owner in
an enchanted coral tower! What's worse, the trapped mermaid thinks
she's being protected not imprisoned, so her living seaweed hair is
ready to fight off any stranger who climbs inside. Can the
Atlantean hero partner with the coral captive to end the witch's
fishy scheme? In this twisted retelling, DC Super Heroes and
Super-Villains collide with the Rapunzel fairy tale to create an
action-packed chapter book for kids!
During Queen Victoria's long reign there were constant, often
subtle, changes to men's clothing in the large, diverse and growing
population. This practical book guides you through the male
fashions of the time and includes eighteen garments typical of the
era. Each project is carefully grounded in historical research,
while traditional tailoring techniques are simplified for the
modern costume maker. It is an essential handbook that describes
fabrics and tools for pattern drafting, tailoring and costume
construction, and explains how to get the best results from each.
It covers a wide variety of gentleman's attire adaptable for
different occupations and social status, including assorted shirts,
trousers, breeches, a tailcoat, a jacket, a frockcoat and several
waistcoats. There is a full set of patterns for each outfit, along
with clear, full colour construction photographs and finally, the
author suggests how outfits can be adapted to fit different sizes
and characters, and gives practical insights into the making
process.

G. H. Mead is rightly considered to be one of sociologys founding
fathers, yet to date there have been surprisingly few books devoted
to his life and work. This book fills the gap by introducing Meads
ideas to a younger generation of social scientists.
Beginning with a biographical account of the main events in Mead's
career, Filipe Carreira da Silva provides a thorough examination of
Mead's social theory of the self, the reception of his ideas into
sociology, and the relevance of his work to the contemporary social
sciences.
He focuses in detail on the core ideas associated with Mead's work,
including gesture and the significant symbol, the Ime distinction
and the generalized other, as well as exploring less well-known
aspects of his writing.
This comprehensive introduction to Mead's thinking will appeal to
students across the social sciences, providing a refreshing
perspective on the social nature of the individual self.

This book presents state-of-the-art research on intrusion detection
using reinforcement learning, fuzzy and rough set theories, and
genetic algorithm. Reinforcement learning is employed to
incrementally learn the computer network behavior, while rough and
fuzzy sets are utilized to handle the uncertainty involved in the
detection of traffic anomaly to secure data resources from possible
attack. Genetic algorithms make it possible to optimally select the
network traffic parameters to reduce the risk of network intrusion.
The book is unique in terms of its content, organization, and
writing style. Primarily intended for graduate electrical and
computer engineering students, it is also useful for doctoral
students pursuing research in intrusion detection and practitioners
interested in network security and administration. The book covers
a wide range of applications, from general computer security to
server, network, and cloud security.
