Studying environmental changes to the seas and oceans through a
variety of perspectives and disciplines, this pioneering book
outlines the challenges of researching marine environmental issues.
With no linear cause-and-effect relationship between marine
environmental changes and the often human-induced stressors which
produce them, the changes to our seas and oceans are complex and
uncertain, arising from multiple and interconnected issues.
Bringing together academic expertise from fields of study, this
innovative book engages with stakeholders and branches of local
ecological knowledge to address marine changes, outlining how they
must be studied from multiple perspectives rather than a single
academic discipline to reach effective solutions. Discussing marine
interdisciplinarity in action, the book features international case
studies from diverse fields across the ocean sciences, humanities
and social sciences that explore art and science collaborations in
practice. Showcasing the practical challenges and opportunities of
such research, this will prove an invigorating read for students
and scholars across such subject areas as environmental governance
and regulation, marine and ocean sciences, sustainability studies
and climate change. Its findings will also be of use to
policymakers and practitioners concerned with marine changes across
the world.
A beautifully illustrated guide from a Celtic Wiccan High Priestess
to celebrating the Wiccan way, from Halloween to handfastings, as
well as everyday rituals to enhance all areas of your life. The
Wiccan calendar is marked by significant festivals, called sabbats.
The most famous is Halloween, also known as Samhain, but you will
be familiar with others, too, such as the Summer and Winter
Solstices. Wiccans celebrate these sabbats with rituals, crafts,
and food and drink, and in this book, Silja reveals how you can
bring some of that magic into your life, even if working as a
solitary witch. She also details other special days throughout the
year, such as August 23, the Roman festival of Vulcanalia, which is
celebrated with bonfires. Discover, too, how Wiccans celebrate
personal rites of passage, such as the naming of a baby and a
couple committing to each other in a Wiccan wedding, known as a
handfasting. Finally, Silja explains how to write your own daily,
weekly, or monthly rituals to bring you peace and happiness.
Lavishly illustrated throughout, this is your essential guide to
all your Wiccan celebrations.
The Materiality of Literary Narratives in Urban History explores a
variety of geographical and cultural contexts to examine what
literary texts, grasped as material objects and reflections on
urban materialities, have to offer for urban history. The
contributing writers' approach to literary narratives and
materialities in urban history is summarised within the
conceptualisation 'materiality in/of literature': the way in which
literary narratives at once refer to the material world and
actively partake in the material construction of the world. This
book takes a geographically multipolar and multidisciplinary
approach to discuss cities in the UK, the US, India, South Africa,
Finland, and France whilst examining a wide range of textual genres
from the novel to cartoons, advertising copy, architecture and
urban planning, and archaeological writing. In the process,
attention is drawn to narrative complexities embedded within
literary fiction and to the dialogue between narratives and
historical change. The Materiality of Literary Narratives in Urban
History has three areas of focus: literary fiction as form of urban
materiality, literary narratives as social investigations of the
material city, and the narrating of silenced material lives as
witnessed in various narrative sources.
This edited volume brings together critical research on climate
change adaptation discourses, policies, and practices from a
multi-disciplinary perspective. Drawing on examples from countries
including Colombia, Mexico, Canada, Germany, Russia, Tanzania,
Indonesia, and the Pacific Islands, the chapters describe how
adaptation measures are interpreted, transformed, and implemented
at grassroots level and how these measures are changing or
interfering with power relations, legal pluralismm and local
(ecological) knowledge. As a whole, the book challenges established
perspectives of climate change adaptation by taking into account
issues of cultural diversity, environmental justicem and human
rights, as well as feminist or intersectional approaches. Chapter 3
of this book is freely available as a downloadable Open Access PDF

their magical properties for spell-casting, and learn spells for
love, fertility, money, wisdom and more. This beautiful, insightful
compendium from Wiccan High Priestess Silja is the ultimate guide
to herbal magic. The first chapters detail herbal mythology,
magical theory and tools, plus different types of magic (black and
white, candle magic, using charm bags and long-term spells), and
ways of working, either alone or as part of a coven. Next, discover
how to grow and store magical herbs, and the importance of the moon
phases when planting and harvesting them. Chapter 4, The 52 Major
Magical Herbs, lists these herbs and their uses in spells, rituals,
alternative medicine and kitchen witchery; and includes the element
they are associated with, what day or time is best for magic with
them, and their associated deities, plus a simple spell for each
herb. This is followed by Other Foods and their Magical Uses,
focusing on a variety of enchanted ingredients such as lemon, poppy
seeds and flowers. The spells section, Chapter 6, presents more
than 50 spells arranged by theme, from love and fertility to
prosperity, moving home, finding a job, friendship, health, wisdom
and more. Chapter 7, Magical Herbs Outside Magic: Kitchen Witchery,
suggests how to add a subtle, magical dimension to your cooking.
Finally, Silja explains how to go about writing your own herbal
spells. You will also discover how to keep track of the spells you
have performed and how to know if they have worked. Lavishly
illustrated by Michael A. Hill, The Green Wiccan Herbal is a
wonderful source of natural witchery that you will refer to time
and again.

Welfare states around the globe are changing, challenged by the
development of knowledge economies. In many countries,
policy-makers' main response has been to modernize welfare states
by focusing on future-oriented social investment policies that
focus on creating, mobilizing, and preserving human skills and
capabilities. Yet, there is massive variance in the development of
social investment strategies. The World Politics of Social
Investment: Political Dynamics of Reform is the second of two
volumes of the World Politics of Social Investment (WOPSI) project,
which systematically maps and explains different welfare reform
strategies in democratic countries around the world. This volume
traces the development of social investment reforms across the
regions of Nordic, Continental, and Southern Europe, as well as
Central and Eastern Europe, North and Latin America, and North East
Asia. The chapters in this volume study the impact of different
structural drivers for social investment (e.g., demographic,
poverty, demand for skill, or lack of an available workforce), the
salience of social investment in the public debates, and the
different political coalitions that led to or prevented the
adoption of social investment strategies. The chapters are written
by leading social policy scholars from different world regions.
They all apply a joint theoretical framework (developed in the
first of the two volumes) to explain the politics of social
investment in a range of contexts and policy fields. Jointly with
the first volume, the WOPSI project offers the first worldwide
analysis of social investment reforms around the globe.
The Basho of Economics refers to the economy's hidden experiential
ground, which has never been explicitly scrutinized by mainstream
economics. The books uncovers this ground by discerning the tacit
presuppositions of classical and neo-classical theories from the
perspective of modern Japanese philosophy.
The interrelation between different fields of public international
law has particular relevance for the systematic understanding of
international law. The book contains a collection of essays on the
law of the sea and its interdependencies with other current legal
issues of global importance. The issue of the relationship between
global warming and law of the sea matters are one focus. In a
second thematic section the collection addresses the global
commons. The third part deals with security issues. The recent
increase in piracy activities has shown the relevance of discussing
the linkage between the law of the sea and security issues.
This SpringerBrief bridges the gap between the areas of simulation
studies on the one hand, and optimization with natural computing on
the other. Since natural computing methods have been applied with
great success in several application areas, a review concerning
potential benefits and pitfalls for simulation studies is merited.
The brief presents such an overview and combines it with an
introduction to natural computing and selected major approaches, as
well as with a concise treatment of general simulation-based
optimization. As such, it is the first review which covers both the
methodological background and recent application cases. The brief
is intended to serve two purposes: First, it can be used to gain
more information concerning natural computing, its major dialects,
and their usage for simulation studies. It also covers the areas of
multi-objective optimization and neuroevolution. While the latter
is only seldom mentioned in connection with simulation studies, it
is a powerful potential technique. Second, the reader is provided
with an overview of several areas of simulation-based optimization
which range from logistic problems to engineering tasks.
Additionally, the brief focuses on the usage of surrogate and
meta-models. The brief presents recent application examples.

In the parlance of modern Japanese philosophy, the term Basho
denotes a field of experience underlying all conceptions of
reality, while remaining itself conceptually ungraspable. The Basho
of Economics, then, refers to the economy s hidden experiential
ground, which has never been explicitly scrutinized, as such, by
mainstream economics. We uncover this ground by discerning the
tacit presuppositions of classical and neo-classical theories from
the perspective of modern Japanese philosophy. In particular, we
draw attention to the traditional atomist assumptions implicit in
their equilibrium-centered models. By breaking through these
assumptions, we reconstruct the economy as a functional and
relational world of habitual and creative activity outside of the
scope of mechanical laws."
Since the cloning of human beings has become technically
conceivable, a controversial ethical and legal debate on the
desirability and admissibility of human cloning has evolved. The
issue touches questions from different disciplines, such as
biology, philosophy, theology and law. This book, although mainly
focusing on the legal problems, therefore tries to find an
interdisciplinary approach to this controversial subject. It
contains contributions from philosophers, theologians, and a
biochemist, as well as from national and international lawyers. In
the first part, a philosophical and theological outline is
presented by scholars considering the topic from different cultural
and religious (Christian, Muslim, Buddhist and Jewish)viewpoints.
Subsequently, the biological foundations are explained by leading
scholars in this field. The final two parts are dedicated to the
legal questions, considering first the situation under German
constitutional law and then on the international plane. In the
comprehensive Annex, the most relevant documents for the
International (in particular from the UN), European and German
legal systems are presented.

konkrete diagnostische Verfahren dargestellt.
