The book specifies a corpus architecture, including annotation and querying techniques, and its implementation. The corpus architecture is developed for empirical studies of translations, and beyond those for the study of texts which are inter-lingually comparable, particularly texts of similar registers. The compiled corpus, CroCo, is a resource for research and is, with some copyright restrictions, accessible to other research projects. Most of the research was undertaken as part of a DFG-Project into linguistic properties of translations. Fundamentally, this research project was a corpus-based investigation into the language pair English-German. The long-term goal is a contribution to the study of translation as a contact variety, and beyond this to language comparison and language contact more generally with the language pair English - German as our object languages. This goal implies a thorough interest in possible specific properties of translations, and beyond this in an empirical translation theory. The methodology developed is not restricted to the traditional exclusively system-based comparison of earlier days, where real-text excerpts or constructed examples are used as mere illustrations of assumptions and claims, but instead implements an empirical research strategy involving structured data (the sub-corpora and their relationships to each other, annotated and aligned on various theoretically motivated levels of representation), the formation of hypotheses and their operationalizations, statistics on the data, critical examinations of their significance, and interpretation against the background of system-based comparisons and other independent sources of explanation for the phenomena observed. Further applications of the resource developed in computational linguistics are outlined and evaluated.

This book contains a collection of articles dealing with aviation communication from a practical as well as a theoretical perspective. Its publication arises as a result of the conference "Languages and cultures above the clouds - International English between standardization and everyday aviation communication", which took place on the 4th and 5th November 2010 at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Germersheim. The book substantiates and prospectively encourages an exchange between pilots, air traffic controllers, (language) trainers and researchers, i.e. an exchange between theory and practice. Not only does it contribute to the discussion of communication problems, but also to the development of efficient solutions concerning communication in Air Traffic Control.

Mit diesem Band liegt die dritte Ausgabe der Beitrage zum Translationswissenschaftlichen Kolloquium vor. Diese Einrichtung basiert auf der Zusammenarbeit des Fachbereichs Translations-, Sprach- und Kulturwissenschaft der Universitat Mainz in Germersheim und des Instituts fur Translation und Mehrsprachige Kommunikation der Fachhochschule Koeln. Die insgesamt 15 im Band enthaltenen Beitrage gehen auf Vortrage zuruck, die von 2010 bis 2013 an beiden Hochschulen gehalten wurden. Sie beziehen sich auf die folgenden Rahmenthemen: 1. Literarisches UEbersetzen, 2. Pragmatik und Translation, 3. Translation und Ideologie, 4. Translation und Sprachkontakt, 5. Gerichtsdolmetschen, 6. Interkulturelle Kommunikation sowie 7. Maschinelle UEbersetzung.

Nach dem Erscheinen des Bandes Translationswissenschaftliches Kolloquium I (2009) geht die Veroeffentlichung von Beitragen zur UEbersetzungs- und Dolmetschwissenschaft in die zweite Runde. Die Beitrage dieses Bandes basieren wiederum auf Vortragen, die am Institut fur Translation und Mehrsprachige Kommunikation der Fachhochschule Koeln sowie am Fachbereich Translations-, Sprach- und Kulturwissenschaft der Universitat Mainz in Germersheim gehalten wurden. Der Band ist den folgenden Rahmenthemen gewidmet: Translation und Philosophie, Community Interpreting: Dolmetschen im medizinisch-sozialen Bereich, Translationstechnologien, korpusbasierte Translationswissenschaft sowie multimediale UEbersetzung.

Der Sammelband geht aus der Ringvorlesung Projektarbeit in der Translationsdidaktik hervor. Diese fand im Wintersemester 2010/11 in Germersheim statt. Ihr Ziel war es, die DozentInnen am Fachbereich Translations-, Sprach- und Kulturwissenschaft der Universitat Mainz zusammenzubringen, die sich mit authentischen Projekten in der Lehre beschaftigen, und sollte dem Austausch uber gemeinsame Interessen und Probleme dienen. Schon im Rahmen der Ringvorlesung wurde deutlich, dass der Projektunterricht in Germersheim teilweise bereits gut vernetzt durchgefuhrt, ausserst theoriegeleitet entwickelt und praxeologisch orientiert erarbeitet wurde. Der Sammelband, der diese Vielfalt und Heterogenitat durch thematische Teile abbildet, soll - uber die Veranstaltung hinausgehend - zur theoretischen Reflexion und Diskussion anregen.
