The Routledge Companion to Trust (Paperback): Rosalind H. Searle, Ann-Marie I. Nienaber, Sim B. Sitkin The Routledge Companion to Trust (Paperback)
Rosalind H. Searle, Ann-Marie I. Nienaber, Sim B. Sitkin
R1,348 Discovery Miles 13 480 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In recent years, trust has enjoyed increasing interest from a wide range of parties, including organizations, policymakers, and the media. Perennially linked to turbulence and scandals, the damaging and rebuilding of trust is a contemporary concern affecting all areas of society. Comprising six thematic sections, The Routledge Companion to Trust provides a comprehensive survey of trust research. With contributions from international experts, this volume examines the major topics and emerging areas within the field, including essays on the foundations, levels and theories of trust. It also examines trust repair and explores trust in settings such as healthcare, finance, food supply chains, and the internet. The Routledge Companion to Trust is an extensive reference work which will be a vital resource to researchers and practitioners across the fields of management and organizational studies, behavioural economics, psychology, cultural anthropology, political science and sociology.

Behavioral Science & Policy, Volume 4, Number 1 (Paperback): Craig R Fox, Sim B. Sitkin Behavioral Science & Policy, Volume 4, Number 1 (Paperback)
Craig R Fox, Sim B. Sitkin
R600 Discovery Miles 6 000 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

The success of nearly all public- and private-sector policies hinges on the behavior of individuals, groups, and organizations. Today, such behaviors are better understood than ever, thanks to a growing body of practical behavioral science research. However, policymakers often are unaware of behavioral science findings that may help them craft and execute more effective and efficient policies. The pages of this journal will become a meeting ground: a place where scientists and non-scientists can encounter clearly described behavioral research that can be put into action. By design, the scope of Behavioral Science & Policy is broad, with topics spanning health care, financial decisionmaking, energy and the environment, education and culture, justice and ethics, and work place practices. Contributions will be made by researchers with expertise in psychology, sociology, law, behavioral economics, organization science, decision science, and marketing. The journal is a key offering of the Behavioral Science & Policy Association in partnership with the Brookings Institution. The mission of BSPA is to foster dialog between social scientists, policymakers, and other practitioners in order to promote the application of rigorous empirical behavioral science in ways that serve the public interest. BSPA does not advance a particular agenda or political perspective.

Organizational Control (Paperback): Sim B. Sitkin, Laura B. Cardinal, Katinka M. Bijlsma-Frankema Organizational Control (Paperback)
Sim B. Sitkin, Laura B. Cardinal, Katinka M. Bijlsma-Frankema
R1,668 Discovery Miles 16 680 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Organization scholars have long acknowledged that control processes are integral to the way in which organizations function. While control theory research spans many decades and draws on several rich traditions, theoretical limitations have kept it from generating consistent and interpretable empirical findings and from reaching consensus concerning the nature of key relationships. This book reveals how we can overcome such problems by synthesising diverse, yet complementary, streams of control research into a theoretical framework and empirical tests that more fully describe how types of control mechanisms (e.g., the use of rules, norms, direct supervision or monitoring) aimed at particular control targets (e.g., input, behavior, output) are applied within particular types of control systems (i.e., market, clan, bureaucracy, integrative). Written by a team of distinguished scholars, this book not only sheds light on the long-neglected phenomenon of organizational control, it also provides important directions for future research.

An Introduction to this Special Supplement of "Leader to Leader, "Leaders: Their Education and Development Today""

Presented by the Fuqua School of Business and its Fuqua/Coach K Center on Leadership and Ethics (COLE) at Duke University

According to recent studies by Hewitt Associates and the Human Resources Institute, the need for effective leader development programs is consistently one of the top three issues facing human resources managers across the Fortune 500 list of the world's largest companies. With the pending retirement of nearly 78 million Baby Boomers over the next several years, the potential for a huge gap in leadership is a significant threat to this nation's ability to remain the global leader in the world economy. Additionally, the new wave of talent entering the workforce, the Millennials, want - and will even demand - more and better forms of effective education, training, and development in their preparation to be the leaders of our future enterprises.

The Fuqua School of Business at Duke University has recognized this emerging need for leadership - and particularly the need for ethical leaders who will operate in the middle of organizations. At Fuqua, our aspiration is not only to educate outstanding managers capable of administering and maintaining the highest standards of an existing organization, it is also to create ethical leaders capable of developing and implementing new ideas and business concepts while enacting responsible ethical values. In 2004, Fuqua established the Fuqua/Coach K Center on Leadership and Ethics (COLE) to foster the development of rigorous research in leadership and ethics, expand the repertoire of leadership and ethics teaching materials, and build a leadership-focused educational experience for its students. The center's mission to develop leaders includes initiatives such as the Leadership Fellows program, course development, and advising the student programs in a way that seeds leadership throughout the school's team oriented culture. These initiatives recognize that effective leadership development is a planned change process and that programs must be organized and integrated to achieve desired leadership education and leader development outcomes.

So when "Leader to Leader" offered us the opportunity to describe the efforts of Fuqua and its COLE center at organizing and integrating initiatives to create the conditions for effective leadership education and leader development, embedded in educational programs that have already achieved world-class recognition, we accepted readily. Our efforts are designed to create transformational experiences that enable participants to meet the emerging demand of business and industry for people who are not only competent in the hard skills of technical expertise (our core strength at a place renowned for business research), but also have the knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies on the softer side to engage others effectively as leaders.
