Innervation of the Gastrointestinal Tract (Hardcover): Simon Brookes, Marcello Costa Innervation of the Gastrointestinal Tract (Hardcover)
Simon Brookes, Marcello Costa
R5,248 Discovery Miles 52 480 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The long tube that makes up the gastrointestinal tract is composed of a variety of tissue types and is the largest internal organ of the body. Its main function is to digest food and absorb the released nutrients. Furthermore, it is subdivided into functionally distinct regions that each mediate one of a variety of actions upon the food consumed, including ingestion, propulsion, secretion, digestion, absorption and expulsion. Autonomic neuronal circuitry is intimately involved in controlling many of these multiple functions of the gut, making it an appealing subject for the study of neuroscientists.
This book reviews the state of current knowledge on the innervation of the gut by the enteric nervous system, and its interface with the extrinsic innervation, from a number of different perspectives, with the aim of providing a comprehensive and accessible account of the subject.

Why Wales Never Was - The Failure of Welsh Nationalism (Paperback): Simon Brooks Why Wales Never Was - The Failure of Welsh Nationalism (Paperback)
Simon Brooks
R513 Discovery Miles 5 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Written as an act of protest in a Welsh-speaking community in north-west Wales, Why Wales Never Was combines a devastating analysis of the historical failure of Welsh nationalism with an apocalyptic vision of a non-Welsh future. It is the 'progressive' nature of Welsh politics and the 'empire of the civic', which rejects both language and culture, that prevents the colonised from rising up against his colonial master. Wales will always be a subjugated nation until modes of thought, dominant since the nineteenth century, are overturned. Originally a comment on Welsh acquiescence to Britishness at the time of the 2014 Scottish independence referendum, the book's emphasis on the importance of European culture is a parable for Brexit times. Both deeply rooted in Welsh culture and European in scope, Why Wales Never Was brings together history, philosophy and politics in a way never tried before in Wales. First published in Welsh in 2015, Why Wales Never Was affirms the author's reputation as one of the most radical writers in Wales today.

The birth of magic. An ill-fated prophesy. An open door to world annihilation. A true hero. Eve, once the most powerful sorceress of all time, laments her fading power, her crumbling empire -- Sarad Major -- and her fading renowned beauty inside the walls of Sarad Moor castle. Also weighing heavily upon her mind and invading her dreams is the knowledge of the impending fate which would befall every living creature of her realm. For many centuries, Eve searched for a way to stop it, looking in dark places for an answer -- any answer. Finally, a way presented itself. But, at what cost? Dahltas, last of the Welk -- a people destroyed by Eve, save for one male child -- is brought to Sarad Moor Castle to be raised by Eve's long-time head castle matron, Onyx, and tutored by the wise old wizard Tacs. Speculation flourishes regarding the mysterious relationship between Eve, Tacs, and Onyx, yet all remain silent as to voice one's opinion regarding the matter is forbidden and may result in one's death. Every night at half past eight, the great wizard Tacs tucks young Dahltas into bed with a story meant to both entertain the young Welk, and also to instruct him as to a secret refuge the old wizard has devoted his life to protect. In time, the young Welk earns Eve's respect and she names him Prince of Sarad Major -- over her own dejected son, Ircrus. And thus begins the Welk's journey in which he not only surpasses Eve's expectations as Prince of Sarad Major, but through his selfless sacrifice, he saves the lives of all.

Neural Control of Gastrointestinal Function (Paperback): David Grundy, Simon Brookes Neural Control of Gastrointestinal Function (Paperback)
David Grundy, Simon Brookes
R1,145 Discovery Miles 11 450 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The gastrointestinal tract is a long, muscular tube responsible for the digestion of food, assimilation of nutrients and elimination of waste. This is achieved by secretion of digestive enzymes and absorption from the intestinal lumen, with different regions playing specific roles in the processing of specific nutrients. These regions come into play sequentially as ingested material is moved along the length of the GI tract by contractions of the muscle layers. In some regions like the oesophagus transit it rapid and measured in seconds while in others like the colon transit is measured in hours and even days, commensurate with the relative slow fermentation that takes place in the large bowel. An hierarchy of controls, neural and endocrine, serve to regulate the various cellular targets that exist in the gut wall. These include muscle cells for contraction and epithelial cells for secretion and absorption. However, there are complex interactions between these digestive mechanisms and other mechanisms that regulate blood flow, immune function, endocrine secretion and food intake. These ensure a fine balance between the ostensibly conflicting tasks of digestion and absorption and protection from potentially harmful ingested materials. They match assimilation of nutrients with hunger and satiety and they ensure that regions of the GI tract that are meters apart work together in a coordinated fashion to match these diverse functions to the digestive needs of the individual. This ebook will provide an overview of the neural mechanisms that control gastrointestinal function. Table of Contents: Neural Control of Gastrointestinal Function / Cells and Tissues / Enteric Nervous System / From Gut to CNS: Extrinsic Sensory Innervation / Sympathetic Innervation of the Gut / Parasympathetic Innervation of the Gut / Integration of Function / References

"They're moving on up..."

Charlie Barrett, male model, is ready for a career change. It's not that modeling for ten years hasn't been fun -- the Paris shows, the VIP lists, the cool flat and even cooler model girlfriend. But he and Lauren are probably going to get married and have kids someday so it's time for him to find a job that offers more challenge than tilting his head left or right. Lovely Lauren seems poised to break into TV, so when a chance meeting results in Charlie's being offered the job as the face of 2cool2btrue, he readily accepts. "Power couple" here they come!

"But something's going down."

2cool is the web equivalent of Armani, Prada, and Gucci. It's the sexiest thing in cyberspace and everyone wants a piece of it. As its marketing guru, Charlie spends his days wading through a sea of luxury products and designer freebies and his nights in a whirl of parties and champagne. When Nora, an American journalist based in London, takes a particular interest in the site -- and in Charlie -- the buzz is definitely on. But suddenly 2cool's owners disappear with a large amount of money and Charlie finds himself investigated for fraud. With Lauren too preoccupied with TV producer Peter to help, the only person Charlie can turn to is Nora. And Nora -- clumsy, eccentric, and increasingly mysterious -- is fast proving herself to be 2hot2handle.

R570 Discovery Miles 5 700 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

If you've got it, flaunt it... Young, ambitious, and pretty damn good-looking, Andrew Collins knows that the workaday world is not enough for him. He wants more than a boring job and a mediocre life. Mostly, though, he wants more money. So when he answers an ad for male escorts, Andrew figures he's just found the perfect way to make a buck -- with a "Sugar Mama." But he soon finds that his older paramour, along with her bizarre and somewhat sinister friends, may be taking him for what looks to be a very bumpy ride with no brakes on board. Just try not to lose it. But now that he's finally got the green, Andrew finds himself drawn to the plainest of Janes. She's a no-nonsense, deep-thinking shop assistant who's saddened to see the real Andrew being suffocated under a pile of fancy clothes and flashy frills -- not his type at all. So why can't he stop thinking about her? Maybe because life in the lap of luxury isn't what it seems -- or even what he truly wants? Caught between cold cash and a warm heart, Andrew must figure out what matters most: his love of money, his love of himself, or love, period....
