The edition of the History of the World, as pub lished by Mr. Williain Oldys in 1736, l avinga lways beell considered to be the most correct in text and typography, it was, at first, intended to follow that edition exclusively but upon a comparison of some doubtful readings with the earlier copies, it ap peared that not only Oldys had made several arbi t rary and unnecessary alterations, but that the p i n ter had executed his task with considerable carelessness and inaccuracy in some chaptei-S hav ing left out entire passages, and in others disfigured them by partial omissions or alterations, which either weakened or destroyed the sense . The death of Sir Walter Raleigh in 1922, on his return from his flight to Baghdad in connection with his official history of the Air Force during the War, deprived England of one of her most brilliant scholars and expositors, and a large number of persons of one of their most valued friends. In this book, in which have been collected all the letters available, covering a period from his youth to a day or so before his death, the Walter Raleigh, scholar, critic, friend and humorist, is to be found in every one of his moods; and that is saying a great deal, for he was one of the most varied and enchanting of companions. But we on this side are the poorer - by how much we can never know. What strengthens the conviction that he might yet have surpassed himself and dwarfed his own best work is, certainly no immaturity, for the flavour of wisdom and old experience hangs about his earliest writings, but a vague sense awakened by that brilliant series of books, so diverse in theme, so slight often in structure.
