and thirteenth centuries. Taking place amid the struggle between
Christendom and the Islamic world for control over the Iberian

The post-communist Central European and Baltic economies are now
approaching the end of their transitions to well-functioning market
systems. In some respects, the approaching EU accession and
conclusion of the transition marks the end of a fascinating period
in economic history. Beyond Transition focuses on the economic
problems and issues facing Central Europe and the Baltics, the
Balkans, and countries belonging to the Commonwealth for
Independent States (CIS) in the post-transition context. This focus
reflects the need to better understand two processes that are
increasingly apparent in the post-communist economic space. First,
many of the problems now facing policy makers in post-communist
economies - choice of exchange rate regime, tax reform, labour
market regulation, improving corporate governance - also face
policy makers in developed and developing countries in other parts
of the world. Second, the EU's eastern enlargement and the policy
agendas facing the first wave accession candidates have major
implications for the CIS and Balkan countries that have not been
(and may never be) invited to join this process.
Therapists have a unique opportunity and responsibility to provide
a respectful environment for their clients, yet respect has not
received adequate attention in the psychotherapy community and
related research. Respect-Focused Therapy: Honoring Clients Through
the Therapeutic Relationship and Process sets forth the formulation
of respect-focused therapy (RFT), a new approach to psychotherapy
that addresses the quality of the client-therapist relationship and
therapeutic process. This volume treats respect as a combination of
action, attitude and open-mindedness, urging therapists to
recognize their own biases and beliefs and be willing to suspend
them for the benefit of their clients. Using Martin Buber's
"I-Thou" relationship as a conceptual model, Slay-Westbrook
provides core principles of respect and demonstrates how to
incorporate these into the therapeutic relationship to best foster
a healing environment.
This book aims to acquaint the reader with both the shared features
and the diversity of the private and cooperative experience in the
nations of the Communist bloc of Europe. It contributes to
understanding of the difficulties standing in the way of a
private-sector future in command economies.
Perinatal Epidemiology synthesizes perinatal knowledge through
the lens of public health practice. This comprehensive text uses a
consistent, logical format to offer readers: (1) A spectrum of
topics affecting maternal and infant health: reproductive health
concerns, maternal and infant morbidity and mortality, and
gestation and fetal growth. (2) Information on timely issues,
including infertility, gestational diabetes, preterm delivery,
postpartum depression, and SIDS. (3) Detailed discussions of
current epidemiological trends, measures and measurement issues,
data sources, and risk and protective factors for each condition
covered. (4) In-depth consideration of public health interventions
and their availability, strengths and limitations. (5) Emerging
areas of interest and directions for research. (6) Text boxes,
definitions of key terms, discussion questions, appendices, and
other helpful features.
Perinatal Epidemiology is a valuable, ready resource for public
health professionals in maternal and child care, reproduction and
fertility. Its accessibility and easy-use format make it an equally
strong textbook for courses in these fields as well as for advanced
medical and nursing students in OB/GYN and pediatrics.
This book considers the extent of the post-Communist monopoly
problem as well as progress in de-monopolization, providing a
complete, comparative picture of the development of competition
policy in a broad cross section of formerly socialist countries.
Even in developed capitalist economies, markets function poorly
without regulation by competitive forces. The countries that once
were part of the Eastern bloc are introducing market forces into
industries created according to the monopolistic logic of central
planning, so that competition policy plays an important role in the
transition to capitalism. This interdisciplinary study examines how
barriers to the development of competitive markets and competition
policy are being overcome in Russia, Poland, Hungary, and Mongolia.
A group of U.S., Russian, and East European specialists explores
the institutions and programs of competition policy as well as its
role in the overall post-Communist transition. Providing a
complete, comparative picture of the development of competition
policy in a broad cross section of formerly socialist countries,
the contributors consider the extent of the post-Communist monopoly
problem as well as progress in de-monopolization.
An examination of the rise of the private sector in command

The larval stage of taeniid cestodes, called the cysticercus,
develops in the intermediate host from the oncosphere. The
infection caused by cysticerci is called cysticercosis. Man is the
only definitive host of two adult cestode species. One of them is
the cestode Taenia solium Linne, 1758. Its larva is called
Cysticercus cellulosae developing mostly in the muscles of swine.
The other is Taeniarhynchus saginatus Goeze, 1782 and its larva
Cysticercus bovis (C. inermis) develops in the muscles of cattle.
Man can carry a cysticercus being its intermediate host, and suffer
from cysticercosis. Because cysticerci are localized in the muscles
of livestock, various measures have to be taken to prevent an
infection of man with the adult cestode. These include a very
strict inspection of the carcasses at the abattoir, a special
treatment of infected meat or a certificate declaring it unfit for
human consumption. The incidence of hu- man tapeworms, being still
relatively high in the population, can be controlled suc- cessfully
only by a comprehensive programme of eradication of muscle
cysticercosis. There is no exact information available on
fundamental processes in the biology of the cysticercus such as its
development, its initial growth in the muscles, its meta- bolism,
the length of its life, the reaction of the host, the possibility
of spontaneous healing. Such knowledge is not only of theoretical
importance, but indispensable for successful control of the
parasites and for the serological diagnosis of cysticercosis.

In 1989, Poland became the first Eastern Bloc country to shake off
the dominance of its ruling Communist party. Although other
post-Communist countries have since followed suit, Poland's
experience has been unique in its move to Westernize. In this
timely and insightful account, Ben Slay provides the first
integrated, comprehensive assessment of Poland's economic
transformation from central planning to a market system, and the
political and sociological factors that have contributed to it.
Drawing on the work of Western and Polish scholars as well as his
own research, Slay traces the evolution of the Polish
transformation from its historical roots in People's Poland and
predicts potential problems and successes facing the Polish
economy. A ground-breaking addition to the emerging study of post-
Communist political economies, The Polish Economy demonstrates that
other countries now struggling to join the West have much to learn
from Poland's example. Of interest to scholars across the social
sciences, this work provides general as well as professional
readers with a compelling account of the realities behind one of
the most important events of our time--the collapse of the Eastern
Bloc. Originally published in 1994. The Princeton Legacy Library
uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available
previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of
Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original
texts of these important books while presenting them in durable
paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy

found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University
