In the last decade, there has been a burgeoning of activity in
the design and implementation of algorithms for algebraic geometric
computation. The workshop on Algorithms in Algebraic Geometry that
was held in the framework of the IMA Annual Program Year in
Applications of Algebraic Geometry by the Institute for Mathematics
and Its Applications on September 2006 is one tangible indication
of the interest. This volume of articles captures some of the
spirit of the IMA workshop.
The aim of the Expositions is to present new and important
developments in pure and applied mathematics. Well established in
the community over more than two decades, the series offers a large
library of mathematical works, including several important
classics. The volumes supply thorough and detailed expositions of
the methods and ideas essential to the topics in question. In
addition, they convey their relationships to other parts of
mathematics. The series is addressed to advanced readers interested
in a thorough study of the subject. Editorial Board Lev Birbrair,

This book constitutes the proceedings of the 5th International
Conference on Mathematical Software, ICMS 2015, held in Berlin,
Germany, in July 2016. The 68 papers included in this volume were
carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions. The
papers are organized in topical sections named: univalent
foundations and proof assistants; software for mathematical
reasoning and applications; algebraic and toric geometry; algebraic
geometry in applications; software of polynomial systems; software
for numerically solving polynomial systems; high-precision
arithmetic, effective analysis, and special functions; mathematical
optimization; interactive operation to scientific artwork and
mathematical reasoning; information services for mathematics:
software, services, models, and data; semDML: towards a semantic
layer of a world digital mathematical library; miscellanea.
Written by the founders of the new and expanding field of numerical
algebraic geometry, this is the first book that uses an
algebra-geometric approach to the numerical solution of polynomial
systems and also the first one to treat numerical methods for
finding positive dimensional solution sets. The text covers the
full theory from methods developed for isolated solutions in the
1980's to the most recent research on positive dimensional sets.
