Southern Africa is a region of impressive diversity of landscape, climate and peoples: from forests to deserts, from coasts to mountains, from subtropical to temperate, from the Zulu, Pedi and Venda peoples to the ancient San peoples whose territories span much of the entire region, with countless tribes in between. This region includes the modern countries of Angola, Botswana, Eswatini (Swaziland), Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe. The peoples' folktales share common themes and roots through their migrations across the mineral-rich lands and have been passed down orally to explain the world, guide society and entertain. This lively collection has a new introduction and contains tales from across the region, of creation and origins, of trickster animals and their lessons, and of hardship, greed and love. FLAME TREE 451: From myth to mystery, the supernatural to horror, fantasy and science fiction, Flame Tree 451 offers a healthy diet of werewolves and mechanical men, blood-lusty vampires, dastardly villains, mad scientists, secret worlds, lost civilizations and escapist fantasies. Discover a storehouse of tales gathered specifically for the reader of the fantastic.

My name is Holly. This story is about me--a writer who's way behindon her deadline.

But, honestly, how can I concentrate on my work when my fiftieth birthday's rushing at me like a freight train,

my hormones are making me feel like a Szechuan flambe, and my eighty-year-old mother's biting her nurses?

Not to mention the fact that my daughter's just begun applying to colleges (none of which are within a thousand-mile radius of home),

and lately my husband's been such an irritating, finger-pointing stinker that I've found myself dreaming of ways to spend his insurance money . . .

My name is Holly. This book tells my story--a coming-of-middle-age story.

'What will you do?' 'Oh, hell, I'll write a novel about writing the screenplay and making the movie.' 'What are you going to call it?' 'Hollywood.' Henry Chinaski has a penchant for booze, women and horse-racing. On his precarious journey from poet to screenwriter he encounters a host of well-known stars and lays bare the absurdity and egotism of the film industry. Poetic, sharp and dangerous, Hollywood - Bukowski's fictionalisation of his experiences making the film Barfly - explores the many dark shadows to be found in the neon-soaked glare of Hollywood's limelight.

NEW UPDATED EDITION Bob Dylan is one of the most iconic figures in modern music, and for two decades, Howard Sounes' Down the Highway has been the definitive biography of an American icon. Based on years of research, documentary evidence, and interviews with 250 of Dylan's intimates--many exclusive--Down the Highway has gone beyond the scope of other accounts to become the most complete, authoritative biography of Bob Dylan now in print. It was praised by The Orlando Sentinel for the insights it offers to Dylan at work . . . from young upstart to grand old man of rock 'n' roll. . . . This book makes us realize now, while he's still with us, how valuable he has been to our culture these last forty years." Sounes's prodigious research has resulted in new insights on every aspect of Dylan's life. He has obtained exclusive information to provide the clearest picture yet of Dylan's 1966 motorcycle accident and subsequent "lost years" in Woodstock, New York, and he uncovered the star's unknown second marriage. He gives inside accounts of the tours, the creation of every album and the most celebrated songs, Dylan's labyrinthine love life, his life-threatening heart illness in 1997, and more--directly from interviews with girlfriends, family, friends, producers, concert promoters, and fellow musicians. As Dylan approaches his eightieth year, Howard Sounes once again brings Down the Highway up to date, following the last decade of Dylan's life and career. Candid, refreshing, and written with a sincere appreciation of Dylan's music and influence, Down the Highway is an essential book for the millions of people who have enjoyed Dylan's music over the years.

When singer Amy Winehouse was found dead at her London home in 2011, the press inducted her into what Kurt Cobain's mother named the 27 Club. Now he's gone and joined that stupid club, she said in 1994, after being told that her son, the front man of Nirvana, had committed suicide. I told him not to... Kurt's mom was referring to the extraordinary roll call of stars who died at the same young age, including Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Jim Morrison of the Doors. All were talented. All were dissipated. All were 27. In this haunting book, author Howard Sounes conducts the definitive forensic investigation into the lives and deaths of the six most iconic members of the Club, as well as some lesser known members, to discover what, apart from coincidence, this phenomenon signifies. In a grimly fascinating journey through the dark side of the music business, Sounes uncovers a common story of excess, madness, and self-destruction. The fantasies, half-truths, and mythologies that have become associated with the Club are debunked. Instead, a clear and compelling narrative emerges, one based on hard facts, that unites these lost souls in both life and death.

In 1973, Myra Hindley, the most notorious woman in Britain, is serving a life sentence for the moors murders - a case that shocked the world. Behind bars she has fallen in love.

When Hindley is refused parole she persuades a sympathetic prison officer and former nun to help her break out of London's grim Holloway prison. The women plan to run away together to Brazil.

Twenty years after Hindley's death, this extraordinary true story is brought to life in vivid new detail by Howard Sounes, author of the true crime classic Fred & Rose, drawing on unseen prison files and new interviews with former Holloway inmates, prison officers and detectives. It is a tale of infatuation and manipulation, crime and punishment.

Despite her part in the appalling murders of five children and teenagers, Myra Hindley is revealed as a highly complex woman of intelligence and charm, which she used to get what she wanted. Or was she, as her supporters claimed, a misunderstood person who regretted her past and only attempted to escape out of desperation?

Revealing the 'most wicked woman in Britain' in new light, This Woman is an atmospheric prison story and a love story that will make readers think again about the woman behind the moors murders.

The living embodiment of The Beatles and a musical juggernaut without parallel, Paul McCartney is the patriarch of pop. Ahead of McCartney's 80th birthday and Glastonbury headline set, acclaimed author Howard Sounes creates the most accurate and extensive profile of McCartney ever built, leaving no stone unturned, and no shadow unexplored. He is the torch-bearer of the Beatles - the greatest band in pop - and one of the most closely studied stars in show business. But surprises and secrets still linger in the life of Sir Paul McCartney. In FAB, his full story is told for the first time. Acclaimed author Howard Sounes spent more than two years investigating every aspect of Sir Paul's life and work, including interviewing over 200 people. The result is the richest and more comprehensive biography of McCartney ever written. Uniquely, FAB pays equal attention to the story of Paul McCartney both in the Beatles and post-Beatles, creating a unique narrative spanning the arc of the artist's life. FAB culminates in the sensational human story of Sir Paul's calamitous marriage to Heather Mills, which is fully revealed for the first time. Sounes proves a judicious critic of the music of an iconic star while also delivering a superb psychological portrait of the man.

On 22 February 2006, GBP53 million was stolen from a cash warehouse belonging to the Securitas company in Tonbridge, Kent. In terms of value, the robbery puts previous British capers, such as the Great Train Robbery, in the shade. This was a crime notable for its audacity, carried out by an unlikely crew of players that included a used car salesman, two Albanian casual workers and a roofer. Five men were convicted at the Old Bailey in January 2008, which attracted nationwide media coverage. A sixth man, Paul Allen, was sentenced in October 2009 for his part. Having become close to the Tonbridge gang and the police during three years of research, Sounes relates a classic crime caper in irresistible, almost forensic detail. After the robbery comes the exciting, sometimes comical story of the getaway. Money is found and arrests are made but key characters slip out of the country, and millions of pounds are still missing. Heist, the definitive account of these compelling events, is wildly entertaining, and a must for all fans of well-written true crime.

Fifty years after the concerts captured on the legendary album 1969: The Velvet Underground Live comes this illuminating biography of Lou Reed. As band leader of the Velvet Underground and later a successful solo artist, Reed was much more than what the general public came to know as the grumpy New Yorker in black who sang "Walk on the Wild Side." To his dedicated admirers, he was one of the most innovative and intelligent songwriters of modern times--a natural outsider who lived a tumultuous and tortured life. In the course of his deep research into Reed's life, from a humble upbringing on Long Island to death from liver disease in 2013, Howard Sounes interviewed more than 140 people who knew the artist intimately--some of whom have not spoken publicly about him before. With new revelations from former wives and lovers, family members, fellow band members and celebrities, and music industry figures, this book offers an updated, unfettered look at Reed's creative process, his mental health problems, his bisexuality, his three marriages, and his addictions to drugs and alcohol. Featuring previously unpublished photographs of some of Reed's most private moments, this is the definitive account of one of rock 'n' roll's most complicated and brilliant prophets.

Yuji Sone
R3,593 Discovery Miles 35 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Japanese Robot Culture examines social robots in Japan, those in public, domestic, and artistic contexts. Unlike other studies, this book sees the robot in relation to Japanese popular culture, and argues that the Japanese 'affinity' for robots is the outcome of a complex loop of representation and social expectation in the context of Japan's continuing struggle with modernity. Considering Japanese robot culture from the critical perspectives afforded by theatre and performance studies, this book is concerned with representations of robots and their inclusion in social and cultural contexts, which science and engineering studies do not address. The robot as a performing object generates meaning in staged events and situations that make sense for its Japanese observers and participants. This book examines how specific modes of encounter with robots in carefully constructed mises en scene can trigger reflexive, culturally specific, and often ideologically-inflected responses.

This book offers a comprehensive analysis of the application level for various agricultural biotechnologies across Sub-Saharan Africa. The authors examine the capacity available as well as the enabling environment, including policy and investments, for facilitating agricultural biotechnology development and use in the region. For each Sub-Saharan country, the status of biotechnology application is assessed in four major sectors; Crops, Livestock, Forestry and Aquaculture. Examples such as the number and requisite skill levels of trained personnel, biosafety frameworks and public awareness are surfaced in these chapters. This work also discusses the impact of push-pull factors on research, training and food security and identifies opportunities for investment in biotechnology and local agribusiness. Development partners, policy makers, agricultural consultants as well as scientists and private sector investors with an interest in biotechnology initiatives in Sub-Saharan Africa will find this collection an important account to identify key gaps in capacity and policy, as well as priority areas going forward. The volume highlights ways to develop technology and increase agricultural production capacity through international cooperation and inclusive economic growth, making it a valuable practice guide in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, in particular SDG 2 Zero Hunger and SDG 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth. Clear case studies round off the reading experience.

Kinetic Theory and Fluid Dynamics (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2002): Yoshio Sone Kinetic Theory and Fluid Dynamics (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2002)
Yoshio Sone
R2,980 Discovery Miles 29 800 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This monograph is intended to provide a comprehensive description of the rela tion between kinetic theory and fluid dynamics for a time-independent behavior of a gas in a general domain. A gas in a steady (or time-independent) state in a general domain is considered, and its asymptotic behavior for small Knudsen numbers is studied on the basis of kinetic theory. Fluid-dynamic-type equations and their associated boundary conditions, together with their Knudsen-layer corrections, describing the asymptotic behavior of the gas for small Knudsen numbers are presented. In addition, various interesting physical phenomena derived from the asymptotic theory are explained. The background of the asymptotic studies is explained in Chapter 1, accord ing to which the fluid-dynamic-type equations that describe the behavior of a gas in the continuum limit are to be studied carefully. Their detailed studies depending on physical situations are treated in the following chapters. What is striking is that the classical gas dynamic system is incomplete to describe the behavior of a gas in the continuum limit (or in the limit that the mean free path of the gas molecules vanishes). Thanks to the asymptotic theory, problems for a slightly rarefied gas can be treated with the same ease as the corresponding classical fluid-dynamic problems. In a rarefied gas, a temperature field is di rectly related to a gas flow, and there are various interesting phenomena which cannot be found in a gas in the continuum limit.

Even brilliant colors are all bound to scatter, Who in our changing world can stay forever? From Iroha-uta, ancient Buddhistic poem of Japan For many years we have been engaged in the preparation and characterization of new metal complexes and chelates, and especially the interpretation of their electronic spectra in solutions. In the course of these studies, we have encountered a number of strange changes in color which occur upon heating, cooling or compressing the solutions, or changing the nature of the solvent. Similar effects of temperature and pressure on the color were often also observed in the solid state. Records of visual observations, spectral measurements, and their interpretations and analyses accumulated each year, until we found ourselves, quite suddenly, in the middle of a fantastic world of color changes - the world of inorganic thermochromism and related chromo tropic phenomena. This book is a result of the reviews by Sone and Prof. S. Utsuno (Kagaku no Ryoiki, 22, 222 (1968); Bunko Kenkyu, 25,123 (1976)), and a series of papers by Fukuda, Sone et al. published in the 1. R1,532 Discovery Miles 15 320 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

It has become increasingly clear that more attention is being paid to the physical chemistry and texture of foodstuffs as developments in food technology proceed more rapidly. Rheology, which has been skillfully introduced into polymer technology during recent years, should also be of direct relevance to food technology. The consistency of foodstuffs not only influences the processing of materials e.g. transport, mixing, etc., but it is also important for controlling the quality of food products. An older friend of mine, Dr T. Takano, and I have published a book Flow and Transport in Food Technology, in which we explained the concepts of rheo logy in the first part, and discussed the technological applications in the latter part. As far as text books on the subject of rheology of foodstuffs are concerned, we have only a few at the present, for example, Foodstuffs, their Plasticity, Fluidity and Con sistency edited by Dr Scott Blair, and Agricultural Rheology written by Dr Scott Blair and Dr Reiner. Although they are now classical works, there is clearly a difference between the social conditions of European countries and Japan.

This self-contained book is an up-to-date description of the basic theory of molecular gas dynamics and its various applications. The book, unique in the literature, presents working knowledge, theory, techniques, and typical phenomena in rarefied gases for theoretical development and application. Basic theory is developed in a systematic way and presented in a form easily applied for practical use. In this work, the ghost effect and non-Navier Stokes effects are demonstrated for typical examples B nard and Taylor Couette problems in the context of a new framework. A new type of ghost effect is also discussed.

Yoshio Sone
R3,186 Discovery Miles 31 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This monograph gives a comprehensive description of the relationship and connections between kinetic theory and fluid dynamics, mainly for a time-independent problem in a general domain. Ambiguities in this relationship are clarified, and the incompleteness of classical fluid dynamics in describing the behavior of a gas in the continuum limita "recently reported as the ghost effecta "is also discussed. The approach used in this work engages an audience of theoretical physicists, applied mathematicians, and engineers.

By a systematic asymptotic analysis, fluid-dynamic-type equations and their associated boundary conditions that take into account the weak effect of gas rarefaction are derived from the Boltzmann system. Comprehensive information on the Knudsen-layer correction is also obtained. Equations and their boundary conditions are carefully classified depending on the physical context of problems. Applications are presented to various physically interesting phenomena, including flows induced by temperature fields, evaporation and condensation problems, examples of the ghost effect, and bifurcation of flows.

Key features:

* many applications and physical models of practical interest

* experimental works such as the Knudsen compressor are examined to supplement theory

* engineers will not be overwhelmed by sophisticated mathematical techniques

* mathematicians will benefit from clarity of definitions and precise physical descriptions given in mathematical terms

* appendices collect key derivations and formulas, important to the practitioner, but not easily found in the literature

Kinetic Theory and Fluid Dynamics serves as a bridge for those working indifferent communities where kinetic theory or fluid dynamics is important: graduate students, researchers and practitioners in theoretical physics, applied mathematics, and various branches of engineering. The work can be used in graduate-level courses in fluid dynamics, gas dynamics, and kinetic theory; some parts of the text can be used in advanced undergraduate courses.

Whether to continue using traditional cost and benefit analysis methods such as systems and software engineering standards or to use a relatively new family of software development processes known as Agile methods is one of most prevalent questions within the information technology field today. Since each family of methods has its strengths and weaknesses, the question being raised by a growing number of executives and practitioners is: Which family of methods provides the greater business value and return on investment (ROI)? Whereas traditional methods have been in use for many decades, Agile methods are still a new phenomenon and, until now, very little literature has existed on how to quantify the business value of Agile methods in economic terms, such as ROI and net present value (NPV).Using cost of quality, total cost of ownership, and total life cycle cost parameters, The Business Value of Agile Software Methods offers a comprehensive methodology and introduces the industry's initial top-down parametric models for quantifying the costs and benefits of using Agile methods to create innovative software products. Based on real-world data, it illustrates the first simple-to-use parametric models of Real Options for estimating the business value of Agile methods since the inception of the Nobel prize-winning Black-Scholes formula. Numerous examples on how to estimate the costs, benefits, ROI, NPV, and real options of the major types of Agile methods such as Scrum, Extreme Programming and Crystal Methods are also included. In addition, this reference provides the first comprehensive compilation of cost and benefit data on Agile methods from an analysis of hundreds of research studies. The Business Value of Agile Software Methods shatters key myths and misconceptions surrounding the modern-day phenomenon of Agile methods for creating software products. It provides a complete business value comparison between traditional and Agile methods. The keys to maximizing the business value of any method are low costs and high benefits and the business value of Agile methods, when compared to traditional methods, proves to be very impressive. Agile methods are a new model of project management that can be used to improve the success, business value, and ROI of high-risk and highly complex IT projects in today's dynamic, turbulent, and highly uncertain marketplace. If you are an executive, manager, scholar, student, consultant or practitioner currently on the fence, you need to read this book!
