Climate change is one of the great challenges of modern politics.
In this volume, leading political theorists and historians
investigate how the history of political ideas can help us make
sense of it. The contributors add a historical perspective to
contemporary debates in political theory. They also show that the
history of political thought offers new directions for thinking
about the environment today. By situating the relationship between
humans and nature within a wider history of ideas, the essays
provide alternative ways of thinking about the most intractable
problems of environmental politics - the status of science in
modern democracies, problems of collective action, and the
challenges of fatalism. This volume will create new avenues of
research for scholars and students in the history of political
thought. It is essential reading for undergraduate students
interested in environmental challenges: both those in politics
seeking a historical perspective, and those in history who want to
link their studies to the present.
Armed only with turntables, a mixer and a pile of records, hip-hop
DJs and turntable musicians have changed the face of music.
However, whilst hip-hop has long been recognised as an influential
popular culture both culturally and sociologically, hip-hop music
is rarely taken seriously as an artistic genre. Hip-Hop
Turntablism, Creativity and Collaboration values hip-hop music as
worthy of musicological attention and offers a new approach to its
study, focusing on the music itself and providing a new framework
to examine not only the musical product, but also the creative
process through which it was created. Based on ten years of
research among turntablist communities, this is the first book to
explore the creative and collaborative processes of groups of DJs
working together as hip-hop turntable teams. Focusing on a variety
of subjects - from the history of turntable experimentation and the
development of innovative sound manipulation techniques, to
turntable team formation, collective creation and an analysis of
team routines - Sophy Smith examines how turntable teams have
developed new ways of composing music, and defines characteristics
of team routines in both the process and the final artistic
product. Relevant to anyone interested in turntable music or
innovative music generally, this book also includes a new turntable
notation system and methodology for the analysis of turntable
compositions, covering aspects such as material, manipulation
techniques and structure as well as the roles of individual
musicians.

A profound insight into the stories behind the image of the Tour de
France, showcasing the sacrifice, despair, strategy and chaos of
those four weeks in July to reveal a fascinating new perspective on
the greatest race on earth. Every year the Tour de France puts on
one of the great viewing spectacles in sport, showcasing
extraordinary human endurance and one of the most beautiful
countries on the planet. But underneath the facade, it's a
different story - a story of suffering, sacrifice and pain. This is
that story. Pain and Privilege gets under the skin of cycling's
cruel super race and describes what the race that unites people
from all over the globe is really like, from the laughs to the
tears, from the politics to the personal, from inspirational
triumph to desperate failure. Team staff, sports scientists,
psychologists, media and dignitaries all contribute to draw a more
complex and confronting portrait of the world's grandest sporting
spectacle. With exclusive contributions from Richie Porte, Cadel
Evans, Chris Froome, Michael Matthews, Caleb Ewan, Sam Bennett,
Robbie McEwen, Michael Morkov, Jens Debusschere, Matt White, Allan
Peiper, Cherie Pridham, Enrico Poitschke, Mathew Hayman, Simon
Clarke, Marcel Kittel and Luke Durbridge. Plus, insights from
Geraint Thomas, Mark Cavendish, Patrick Lefevere, David Brailsford,
Tadej Pogacar and more.

A few years after the reconciliation of my marriage, I was asked by
a lifelong friend to talk with a woman who was going through a
separation and pending divorce. During a period of three years, we
talked on the telephone almost daily. As she would share her
feelings and experiences, I would recall how the Lord had helped me
through a very similar place. I would say, "Wait. Let me find that
place in my journal " As I read to her, she would weep and say how
that ministered to her so powerfully. It was just what she needed
at that moment. "These words are a balm to my soul " She would tell
me I needed to make this available to other women who were going
through the same thing in their marriage. This was a confirmation
that there was a need. I now offer my journey in hopes it will
minister to you as well. Sophie is a former psychiatric nurse, a
former director of a Pregnancy Care Center, and a former Abstinence
presenter to teenagers. She is a wife of 43 years and the mother of
three grown children. To maintain privacy, she has chosen to use a
pseudonym.
