This book is based on the first edition titled Historical Dictionary of Mozambique - with new entries, updating of information, some reorganisation, and the correction of a few minor errors of fact and interpretation in the earlier work; it is aimed primarily at a South African readership.
The purpose of bringing out this revised edition is to make information on Mozambique more easily available and affordable for students and others in southern Africa who are interested in the history of one of South Africa's closest neighbours. Over several centuries, relations between the two emerging territories have been complex and sometimes troubled, and despite the fact that the economies of the two countries have
more recently become historically interdependent, the simple fact that Mozambique is officially – at least, a Portuguese-speaking country has perhaps functioned as a barrier to understanding.
The emphasis in focus is on contemporary history from the middle of the twentieth century onwards, with perhaps one-third of all entries dealing with topics and personalities from that period. However, the dictionary includes many entries covering both the period before the arrival of the Portuguese in the late fifteenth century, as well as on the five centuries of their presence – often precarious – in Mozambique.
While Cinder dreams of a girl with eyes the colour of the sea,
Princess Ella longs for something she cannot yet imagine. When the
two girls meet, their hearts are filled with joy, but what will
happen when the clock strikes midnight? With one family being a
source of encouragement, the other determined to crush all attempts
at happiness, the odds are firmly stacked against our heroes. Yet
with the power of love and strength, hope prevails. The result is a
richly purposeful and inspirational, tale where girl meets girl and
love faces adversity. Will Cinder and Ella find their happily ever
after?
The Austrian School forms a concise but comprehensive exposition of
the main tenets of the modern Austrian School of Economics while
also providing a detailed explanation of the differences between
the Austrian and the neoclassical (including the Chicago School)
approaches to economics. The book also includes: * reviews of the
contributions of the main Austrian economists, critical analysis of
the major objections to Austrian economics and an evaluation of its
likely future development * complete exposition on the concepts and
implications of entrepreneurship and dynamic competition * a new
concept of dynamic efficiency (as an alternative to the standard
Paretian criterion) and a generalised definition of socialism (as a
systematic aggression against entrepreneurship) * evaluation of the
role of Spanish Scholastics of the 16th century as forerunners of
the Austrian School, as well as the influence and contributions of
the main Austrian Scholars of the 19th and 20th centuries. This
book will most notably appeal to Austrian economists but also to
other free market economists as well as researchers and academics
of economic methodology, the history of economic thought,
institutional economics and comparative economic systems.

Anjali is back for an encore in this follow-up to Always
Anjali! And she isn't going to let anyone make her feel bad
for being good at something, especially something she loves. For
Anjali, playing the tabla is something that comes naturally--she
loves feeling the drum beneath her fingers and getting lost in the
music. She doesn't care that some people say it's an
instrument for boys. But she does care when her skills make
others treat her differently. Anjali starts downplaying her
talent, and even messes up on purpose. When her teacher announces a
music contest, Anjali can’t deny her dreams of playing the
tabla. From actor, author, and activist Sheetal Sheth, this
second book in the Anjali series is an important message about
never dimming your light.
This highly topical book presents a new theory on the
characteristics of entrepreneurial knowledge. It explores the
recent shift among professional economists and scholars in their
evaluation of the debate of socialism. Socialism, Economic
Calculation and Entrepreneurship presents an application of Israel
M. Kirzner's theory of entrepreneurship to the theory of the
impossibility of socialism. It discusses the influence of the fall
of socialism, with particular reference to the evolution of
economic thought.

In this unique collection of short stories, the small events of
daily life reveal big themes--love and friendship, youth and
growing up, success and failure. Calling on his own experiences of
growing up in California's Central Valley, poet Gary Soto brings to
life the joys and pains of young people everywhere. The smart,
tough, vulnerable kids in these stories are Latino, but their
dreams and desires belong to all of us.
This book gathers a collection of English language essays by Jesus
Huerta de Soto over the past ten years, examining the dynamic
processes of social cooperation which characterize the market, with
particular emphasis on the role of both entrepreneurship and
institutions. The author's multidisciplinary approach to the
subject is in keeping with a trend in economic thought established
by the Austrian school of economics; a discourse that had witnessed
a significant revival over the last thirty years. Areas covered in
this book include an introduction to the theory of dynamic
efficiency as an alternative to the standard paretian criteria, an
explanation of the differences between the Austrian and the
neoclassical approach to economics, a generalized definition of
socialism that allows the joint application of the analysis of
interventionism, a dynamic Austrian approach to the analysis of
free market environmentalism, nationalism, the reform of Social
Security and the theory of banking and an evaluation of the role of
Spanish Scholastics of the Sixteenth Century.
Containing essays by leading Cold War scholars, such as Wilfried
Loth, Geir Lundestad and Seppo Hentila, this volume offers a
broad-ranging examination of the history of detente in the Cold
War. The ten years from 1965 to 1975 marked a deep transformation
of the bipolar international system of the Cold War. The Vietnam
War and the Prague Spring showed the limits of the two superpowers,
who were constrained to embark on a wide-ranging detente policy,
which culminated with the SALT agreements of 1972. At the same time
this very detente opened new venues for the European countries:
French policy towards the USSR and the German Ostpolitik being the
most evident cases in point. For the first time since the 1950s,
Western Europe began to participate in the shaping of the Cold War.
The same could not be said of Eastern Europe, but ferments began to
establish themselves there which would ultimately lead to the
astounding changes of 1989-90: the Prague Spring, the uprisings in
Gdansk in 1970 and generally the rise of the dissident movement.
That last process being directly linked to the far-reaching event
which marked the end of that momentous decade: the Helsinki
conference. The Making of Detente will appeal to students of the
Cold War, international history and European contemporary history.

* Offers a practical overview of 28 crucial concepts in Marxist

readings. * Demonstrates the importance of Marxist concepts to
Lacanian psychoanalytic practice. * Brings together a broad range

Emerging Nanotechnologies in Immunology aims to deliver a
systematic and comprehensive review of data concerning the nature
of interaction and nano-related risks between the
nanophamaceuticals currently in the pipeline of S&T development
for skin, ocular, and nasal drug delivery, including absorption,
toxicity, and the ability to distribute after systemic exposure.
The scientific development of manufactured nanomaterials for drug
delivery is increasing rapidly. One of the most prominent
applications is topical drug delivery, where cutaneous, ocular, and
nasal exposure becomes even more relevant. These targets are the
first barrier that nanoparticles encounter when in contact with the
human body. The contributors addresses a representative set of the
broad spectrum of nanopharmaceuticals currently being used,
including cationic lipid nanoparticles, polymeric PLGA, PLA
nanoparticles, biomacromolecules-based nanoparticles, and other
scaffolds tissue engineered skin substitutes. Regulation and risk
is also covered, since the safety of these nanophamaceuticals still
represents a barrier to their wide innovative use.
Unlike other books on the Arab uprisings of 2010-2011 which focus
on why they occurred, this book looks instead towards the future of
three countries - Syria, Libya and Yemen - where the violence and
instability initiated by the uprisings persist. It additionally
examines the case of Iraq which continues to suffer from a
precarious political situation introduced by the US led invasion of
2003.The book investigates what should be done to achieve inclusive
political and economic development and eventually a lasting peace.
It describes the particular circumstances in each of the four
countries, and analyses the common challenges facing them such as
the need to achieve economic diversification, control inflation,
raise employment levels, husband fiscal expenditures, control
corruption and implement transparent policies. It argues that in
the four countries any lasting settlement must involve an
explicitly stated new social contract that lays the foundation for
inclusive socio-economic development and a genuinely democratic
environment. In addition, a massive transformation is required of
the institutional fabric of society, that is, the set of key
institutions that helped create the conditions for conflict.
Moreover, the book argues that any successful transition hinges on
anticipating the potential for political and economic development
that an eventual peace agreement will open. This can only be done
by envisioning and planning the reforms that ought to be
implemented, and building up political support for the transition
phase.

This book examines the politics involved in the mobilization of the
Latinx vote in America. Delving into the questions of race and
identity formation in conjunction with the role of communication
media, the author discusses the implications for Latinx voters and
their place in the American political and racial system. Utilizing
an in-depth study of the mobilizing efforts of national Latinx
groups, along with a rigorous analysis of online media, news media,
and electoral results, this book discusses: How the old notions of
white and black America clash with the growing focus on Latinos How
political organizers develop and use messages of racial solidarity
to motivate people, what technologies are at their disposal, and
what their use means How the study of new media is vital to
exploring race in the 21st century, and why communication cannot
ignore the racial legacies of the 20th century Theoretically
located in between the fields of communication and racial/ethnic
studies, this book will be of great relevance to scholars and
students working in the field of communication studies, political
communication, Latinx studies, and sociology.
This book chronicles the author's application of critical pedagogy
in Hong Kong secondary schools serving students from working-class
families of South Asian heritage, so-called 'ethnic minorities' in
the local context. Soto used concepts such as banking pedagogy,
generative themes, liberatory dialogue, and transformative
resistance, to first understand students' school, online, and
community experiences, and then to reshape his teaching of English
and humanities subjects to address the students' academic, social,
and emotional needs. This critical ethnography is set against
educational reforms in Hong Kong, which re-orientated schools
towards developing a knowledge-economy workforce, increased
privatization and competition in the school system, aimed to build
national identification with China, and sought to address growing
inequality in a territory known for wealth disparity. While these
reforms opened opportunities for implementing student-centered
pedagogies in schools and increased student access to tertiary
education, ethnic minority youth faced ongoing economic and social
marginalization on top of academic difficulties. The central
narrative captures everyday struggles and contradictions arising
from intersections of neoliberal reforms, institutional school
histories, students' transnational realities, and collective
efforts for equity and social justice. In the course of the book a
parallel story unfolds, as the author explores what it means to be
a critical teacher and researcher, and is reborn in the process.
The book's 'on the ground' story is hopeful, yet tempered, in
discussing the limits and possibilities for critical pedagogy. It
will be of a great resource for researchers, teacher educators, and
pre-service and in-service teachers who are interested in the
topic.
