The men I have worked with and the staff I've worked alongside over
the last ten years in prison have taught me strength, compassion,
courage, and fundamentally, the need to talk, the need to share and
the need to tell these stories. These are the stories of lives
lived, lost and taken, behind walls so high we can pretend they
hide another world entirely. But at what cost? __________ Behind
These Doors is a provocative, insightful and illuminating
interrogation of what it is to live and to work in the UK's most
infamous prisons. The individuals Alex introduces us to are, for
the most part, living on the margins of society and the impact of
the cycles of violence that so often accompany those lives is clear
to see. Alex takes us by the hand, behind the gates and through
security into prison cells, to the shared kitchens, the prison
library, down the corridors and into the 'seg' (segregation unit);
we will meet men who will surprise and shock us in equal measure,
as well as prison officers who struggle to contain the challenges
the job presents. This is a no holds barred depiction of life in
prison and its many devastating and astonishing, and sometimes
inspiring, consequences. As a woman in this environment, her
perspective feels especially urgent. __________
The eccentric Mortmain family have been rattling around in a vast,
decrepit castle for years, gradually slipping into financial ruin.
Mortmain is crippled by writer's block, while his beautiful second
wife Topaz struggles to be a dutiful stepmother to Rose, Cassandra
and Thomas. Rose needs a husband, Thomas an education but Cassandra
lives for her writing. Through her gloriously witty and shrewd
diaries, she chronicles the trials of family life, the impact on
their prospects of the arrival of a glamorous American family, and
the agonies of falling in love for the first time. A wonderfully
quirky coming-of-age story, I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith,
author of The Hundred and One Dalmatians is an affectionately drawn
portrait of one of the funniest families in literature. This
beautiful Macmillan Collector's Library edition of I Capture the
Castle is illustrated by Ruth Steed, and features an afterword by
publisher Anna South. Designed to appeal to the booklover, the
Macmillan Collector's Library is a series of beautiful gift
editions of much-loved classic titles. Macmillan Collector's
Library are books to love and treasure.
New EU Physical Agents Directives on Noise and Vibration will be
incorporated into UK law by February 2006. Explicit action levels
for vibration will be introduced, while the action levels for noise
will be drastically cut. In order to comply with these Directives,
companies need to assess noise and vibration levels and provide
necessary protection for their employees. They are also required to
monitor and if necessary reduce noise and vibration risks.
Managing Noise and Vibration at Work introduces noise and both
hand-arm and whole-body vibration by explaining what they are and
how they can affect the body, drawing out the similarities and
differences between the hazards. It provides clear explanations of
the requirements of the EU Directives and explains how to fulfill
them. Practical information on measurement, making noise and
vibration assessments, and approaches to controlling risk help the
reader to understand the issues of noise and vibration exposure in
the workplace. The text is supported by information and diagrams of
measuring equipment, advice on how to plan a survey, worked
examples of necessary calculations, and charts and diagrams that
can be used in place of the calculations. Suitable hearing and
vibration protection is detailed. Case studies help to set the
subject in context and highlight common errors and pitfalls.
The book fully covers the syllabuses of the Institute of Acoustics'
certificate courses in Workplace Noise Assessment and Management of
Occupational Exposure to Hand-arm Vibration. It will also be of use
to those studying for the Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control.
For those studying for the NEBOSH Diploma in Health and Safety,
this booksatisfies modules 1E and 2E. As the Institute of Acoustics
syllabuses are based on the Health and Safety Executive's
guidelines, the book will also be a useful up-to-date reference
for: risk managers; Health and Safety advisors and managers;
occupational hygienists; environmental health officers; and HSE
inspectors, especially in the Construction, Manufacturing,
Agriculture and Forestry sectors.
Tim South is a Senior Lecturer in Acoustics at the School of Health
and Human Sciences at Leeds Metropolitan University, and a member
of the Institute of Acoustics' Education Committee. He teaches the
Institute of Acoustics courses for the Certificate of Competence in
Workplace Noise Assessment, the Certificate in the Management of
Occupational Exposure to Hand-arm Vibration, and also the
Institute's Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control. He has
extensive consultancy experience in workplace noise assessments,
hand-arm vibration and whole-body vibration exposure assessments.
* Shows how the new EU Physical Agents Directives on Noise and
Vibration will affect businesses
* Provides the information necessary to plan a noise and vibration
assessment, including checklists, forms and case studies
* Includes practical information about measuring devices and
protective equipment
The objective of the work of W. South Coblin has been to collect
various materials on Chinese and Tibeto-Burman languages into a
single list and to arrange this list in a clear and convenient
form, with indexes which make the information easily accessible. The
author presents the view that Chinese and the Tibeto-Burman
languages must have descended from a common proto-language. He
reconstructs Sino-Tibetan proto-forms from which Chinese and
Tibeto-Burman reflexes can be derived by regular rules. The
importance of the reconstructive exercise lies not in the detail of
this or any other reconstructed system but in the fact that the
exercise can be successfully carried out, regardless of theoretical
convictions or orientations.

The first volume in green criminology devoted to gender, this book
investigates gendered patterns to offending, victimisation and
environmental harms. Including feminist and intersectional
analysis, and with original case studies from the Global North and
Global South, the book also examines actions that have been taken
in response to gendered crimes and harms, together with insights on
the gendered nature of resistance. The collection advances debate
on green crimes, environmental harm and climate change and will
inspire students and researchers to foreground gender in debates
about reducing and transforming the challenges affecting our
planet’s future.
The Routledge International Handbook of Green Criminology was the
first comprehensive and international anthology dedicated to green
criminology. It presented green criminology to an international
audience, described the state of the field, offered a description
of a range of environmental issues of regional and global
importance, and argued for continued criminological attention to
environmental crimes and harms, setting an agenda for further
study. In the six years since its publication, the field has
continued to grow and thrive. This revised and expanded second
edition of the Handbook reflects new methodological orientations,
new locations of study such as Asia, Canada and South America, and
new responses to environmental harms. While a number of the
original chapters have been revised, the second edition offers a
range of fresh chapters covering new and emerging areas of study,
such as: conservation criminology, eco-feminism, environmental
victimology, fracking, migration and eco-rights, and e-waste. This
handbook continues to define and capture the field of green
criminology and is essential reading for students and researchers
engaged in green crime and environmental harm.

The ebook edition of this title is Open Access and freely available
to read online. Transnational illicit markets have been transformed
by the digital revolution. They take advantage of encryption
technologies, smartphones, social media applications and
cryptocurrencies that protect the digital traces of buyers and
sellers, posing new challenges to drug control policies and public
health alike. Digital Transformations of Illicit Drug Markets:
Reconfiguration and Continuity considers how the digital revolution
has changed the selling and buying of illicit substances through
increased convenience and anonymisation. Providing a uniquely
interdisciplinary perspective, chapters show how the digital
transformation of illicit drug markets combines a reconfiguration
of how sellers and buyers interact in new markets. Emphasising that
illicit digital markets are embedded in societal structures and
power relations in general, contributors also recognise the
importance of critical perspectives on inequalities between the
Global North and South as well as issues of gender. Digital
Transformations of Illicit Drug Markets: Reconfiguration and
Continuity challenges the field of criminology to recognise the
limits of its traditional knowledge and move beyond the
preoccupations that restrict crime to certain fixed spaces in order
to develop new explanations.

This book aims to clarify the concept of impact investing by
combing the international experience and the practices in China,
promote the standardization of the measurement and evaluation
system of impact investing, contribute to the establishment of an
impact investing ecosystem in China, and guide investment to
consider both the social and environmental impact and
profitability. This book mainly contains four parts: the definition
of impact investing and the similarities and differences with other
related concepts; the development, characteristics and trends of
global impact investing; the development and the current situation
of impact investing in China; a case study in China.
In the 21st century, environmental harm is an ever-present reality
of our globalised world. Over the last 20 years, criminologists,
working alongside a range of other disciplines from the social and
physical sciences, have made great strides in their understanding
of how different institutions in society, and criminal justice
systems in particular - respond - or fail to respond - to the harm
imposed on ecosystems and their human and non-human components.
Such research has crystallised into the rapidly evolving field of
green criminology. This pioneering volume, with contributions from
leading experts along with younger scholars, represents the state
of the art in criminologists' pursuit of understanding in the
environmental sphere while at the same time challenging academics,
lawmakers and policy developers to explore new directions in the
study of environmental harm.
