Despite its enormous extent and impact, the Swedish scholarship produced in the context of Olof Rudbeck's monumental 'Atlantica' (4 vols, 1679-1702) has hitherto escaped attention outside Scandinavia. In seiner Bedeutung fur Jugendliche nahm es eine erstaunliche Entwicklung; so war der Horfunk unmittelbar an der jugendkulturellen Verbreitung des Rock'n'Roll beteiligt oder trug mit speziellen Jugendsendungen in den spaten 1960er Jahren zur adoleszenten Identitatsbildung bei. Dennoch wurde dem Radio - spatestens seit Etablierung des audiovisuellen Rundfunkpendants - sowohl in wissenschaftlichen Publikationen als auch von ausserakademischen Forschungsinstanzen nur in geringem Masse Beachtung geschenkt. Der Horfunk, quasi-zyklisch totgesagt, ist auch heute nicht von der medialen Bildflache verschwunden; fur Heranwachsende bietet er - nicht erst seit der verstarkten Etablierung von Jugendprogrammen in den 1990er Jahren - vielfaltige Moglichkeiten. In einer Zeit facettenreicher medialer Alternativen gewinnt allerdings die Frage nach seiner Konstitution wieder an Bedeutung. Im neuen Jahrtausend sehen sich die jungen Rezipienten mit einer immer grosseren Angebotsvielfalt konfrontiert, die Anbieter einem harteren intermedialen Wettbewerb ausgesetzt. Wie diese Arbeit herausstellen wird, ist das Radio fur Heranwachsende vor allem als Musikmedium von Bedeutung; in dieser Funktion hat es jedoch in den letzten Jahren zahlreiche Konkurrenten hinzugewonnen. In einer immer starker konvergenten Medienwelt bieten multifunktionale Endgerate neue Alternativen, Musik zu horen, doch auch die Angebote selbst dehnen sich aus und lassen junge Horer aus einer Fulle von Moglichkeiten schopfen. Computer, MP3-Player und Internet sind fur Jugendliche zu wichtigen Abspieloptionen geworden und auch das Radio macht vor dieser Entwicklung nicht Halt: mit dem Konvergenzmediu
