Biomimetic Neural Learning for Intelligent Robots - Intelligent Systems, Cognitive Robotics, and Neuroscience (Paperback, 2005... Biomimetic Neural Learning for Intelligent Robots - Intelligent Systems, Cognitive Robotics, and Neuroscience (Paperback, 2005 ed.)
Stefan Wermter, G unther Palm, Mark Elshaw
R1,622 Discovery Miles 16 220 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents research performed as part of the EU project on biomimetic multimodal learning in a mirror neuron-based robot (MirrorBot) and contri- tions presented at the International AI-Workshop on NeuroBotics. The ov- all aim of the book is to present a broad spectrum of current research into biomimetic neural learning for intelligent autonomous robots. There is a need for a new type of robot which is inspired by nature and so performs in a more ?exible learned manner than current robots. This new type of robot is driven by recent new theories and experiments in neuroscience indicating that a biological and neuroscience-oriented approach could lead to new life-like robotic systems. The book focuses on some of the research progress made in the MirrorBot project which uses concepts from mirror neurons as a basis for the integration of vision, language and action. In this book we show the development of new techniques using cell assemblies, associative neural networks, and Hebbian-type learning in order to associate vision, language and motor concepts. We have developed biomimetic multimodal learning and language instruction in a robot to investigate the task ofsearching for objects. As well as the researchperformed in this area for the MirrorBot project, the second part of this book incorporates signi?cant contributions from other research in the ?eld of biomimetic robotics. This second part of the book concentrates on the progress made in neuroscience inspired robotic learning approaches (in short: NeuroBotics).

Emergent Neural Computational Architectures Based on Neuroscience - Towards Neuroscience-Inspired Computing (Paperback, 2001... Emergent Neural Computational Architectures Based on Neuroscience - Towards Neuroscience-Inspired Computing (Paperback, 2001 ed.)
Stefan Wermter, Jim Austin, David Willshaw
R3,055 Discovery Miles 30 550 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

It is generally understood that the present approachs to computing do not have the performance, flexibility, and reliability of biological information processing systems. Although there is a comprehensive body of knowledge regarding how information processing occurs in the brain and central nervous system this has had little impact on mainstream computing so far. This book presents a broad spectrum of current research into biologically inspired computational systems and thus contributes towards developing new computational approaches based on neuroscience. The 39 revised full papers by leading researchers were carefully selected and reviewed for inclusion in this anthology. Besides an introductory overview by the volume editors, the book offers topical parts on modular organization and robustness, timing and synchronization, and learning and memory storage.

Hybrid Neural Systems (Paperback, 2000 ed.): Stefan Wermter, Ron Sun Hybrid Neural Systems (Paperback, 2000 ed.)
Stefan Wermter, Ron Sun
R2,953 Discovery Miles 29 530 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Hybrid neural systems are computational systems which are based mainly on artificial neural networks and allow for symbolic interpretation or interaction with symbolic components. This book is derived from a workshop held during the NIPS'98 in Denver, Colorado, USA, and competently reflects the state of the art of research and development in hybrid neural systems. The 26 revised full papers presented together with an introductory overview by the volume editors have been through a twofold process of careful reviewing and revision. The papers are organized in the following topical sections: structured connectionism and rule representation; distributed neural architectures and language processing; transformation and explanation; robotics, vision, and cognitive approaches.

Connectionist, Statistical and Symbolic Approaches to Learning for Natural Language Processing (Paperback, 1996 ed.): Stefan... Connectionist, Statistical and Symbolic Approaches to Learning for Natural Language Processing (Paperback, 1996 ed.)
Stefan Wermter, Ellen Riloff, Gabriele Scheler
R1,673 Discovery Miles 16 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is based on the workshop on New Approaches to Learning for Natural Language Processing, held in conjunction with the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence, IJCAI'95, in Montreal, Canada in August 1995.
Most of the 32 papers included in the book are revised selected workshop presentations; some papers were individually solicited from members of the workshop program committee to give the book an overall completeness. Also included, and written with the novice reader in mind, is a comprehensive introductory survey by the volume editors. The volume presents the state of the art in the most promising current approaches to learning for NLP and is thus compulsory reading for researchers in the field or for anyone applying the new techniques to challenging real-world NLP problems.
