Die Menschenrechte stellen eine zentrale Grundlage von Erziehung und Bildung dar und sind zu einem padagogischen Leitbegriff geworden. Viele Fragen sind jedoch umstritten oder ungeklart. Dies betrifft den Geltungsanspruch der Menschenrechte, die Bedingungen ihrer Verwirklichung, aber auch ihre Bedeutung im Hinblick auf Bildung, Erziehung und Sozialisation. In der Menschenrechtsbildung besteht bislang ein grosses Theorie- und Forschungsdefizit.
