The topic of the study is literary criticism. The work shows how critical attitudes have taken root since the 17th century and how the uncertainty of those involved has increased as a result. One of the particular strategies used by authors and readers in reacting to this uncertainty is a certain form of attentiveness: the readiness to observe works exactly and extensively and to not allow oneself to be distracted by flaws in the process. At the same time, this attitude of attentiveness forms a characteristic of philology which arises from critical discourse.

At first glance, the category of 'sincerity' has little in common with 17th century culture. On the contrary, the desire to break with the aesthetic conventions and the artificiality of semiotic systems is regarded as a characteristic of the subsequent historical epoch - the Enlightenment - and its vehement efforts to set itself off from the Baroque. The book relativizes the incisive nature of this distinction in the history of ideas by inquiring into the forms and strategies of the authentic, the natural, and the straightforward in the literature, the arts, the behavioural doctrines, and the cultural history of the early modern age.

"Die Antike" als eine der zentralen Referenzen der deutschen Aufklarung ist keineswegs homogen, sondern zeichnet sich durch ihre Pluralitat aus. Namen und eben auch Lokalitaten implizieren auf kompakte Weise asthetische Konzepte, anthropologische Programme, ethisch-moralische Normen, Gesellschaftsmodelle, politische Orientierungen oder Ideale literarischer Kommunikation. Die antike Tradition verfugt uber eine interne Topographie mit verschiedenen anspielungsreichen Orten; und sie wird von bestimmten Orten aus adressiert und vereinnahmt. In Poetiken und Vorreden, in Bildprogrammen von Titelkupfern und Vignetten oder in Entscheidungen fur Gattungen, Sujets und Motive tragt der Rekurs auf die Antike dazu bei, wiedererkennbare Profile zu etablieren. Dabei interagieren literarische Projekte mit einer Vielzahl von Faktoren, die sich aus den regionalen Bedingungen herleiten. Die Beitrage dieses Bandes analysieren die Ordnungen, die dieser Pluralitat der Antike im 18. Jahrhundert zugrunde liegen. Sie fragen danach, wie die literarische Aufklarung auf das vielfaltige Angebot der UEberlieferung zugreift, um Positionen in den Konkurrenzen und Allianzen des literarischen Feldes zu kennzeichnen.
