This book offers a comprehensive overview of the pre-modern economic history of Central Asia and the Silk Road, covering several millennia. By analyzing an abundance of sources and materials, it illustrates the repeated economic heydays of the Silk Road, during which it linked the Orient and Occident for many centuries. Nomadic steppe empires frequently dominated Central Asia, molded its economy and influenced trade along the Silk Road. The book assesses the causes and effects of the wide-ranging overland trade booms, while also discussing various internal and external factors that led to the gradual economic decline of Central Asia and eventual demise of the Silk Road. Lastly, it explains how the economic decline gave rise to Chinese and Russian colonialism in the 18th and 19th centuries. Detailed information, e.g. on the Silk Road's trajectories in various epochs, is offered in the form of numerous newly drafted maps.

Dieses Buch ist das Ergebnis mehIjahriger Zusammenarbeit der Autoren bei der Bera- tung westlicher Unternehmen, die sich in den benachbarten Staaten im UEbergang zur Marktwirtschaft durch den Kauf von Anteilen oder ganzen Unternehmen engagieren wollen. Es bildet einen kleinen Ausschnitt aus der gemeinsamen Tatigkeit, die sich von volkswirtschaftlicher Analyse uber Marktforschung und Feasibility Studies bis zur Mitar- beit bei der Bewertung oestlicher Unternehmen erstreckte. G. Fink hatte die Idee zu diesem Projekt, das dankenswerter Weise vom Jubilaumsfonds der Oesterreichischen Nationalbank finanziert wurde (projektnummer 3824), und uber- nahm die Projektleitung. H. Aigner steuerte seine praktische Erfahrung und die in vielen Jahren erworbenen theoretischen Kenntnisse bei und konzipierte die Rohfassung des Leitfadens zur Unternehmensbewertung. S. Barisitz fuhFte Interviews mit 25 Unterneh- mensberatern, von denen insbesondere GRTlPrice Waterhouse ein umfangreiches Fall- beispiel zur Verfugung gestellt hat. Die Bereitschaft der interviewten Wirtschaftstreu- hander, Wirtschaftsprufer und Unternehmensberater, die Autoren an ihren Erfahrungen teilhaben zu lassen, gibt diesem Buch die besondere Wurze. S. Barisitz konzipierte die Rohfassung der Kapitel 1-5, er trug somit die grosse Last des Schreibens. Das gesamte Manuskript wurde von den drei Autoren mehrfach gemeinsam uberarbeitet. Die aus verschiedenen Federn stammenden Texte wurden harmonisiert, erganzt und ver- tieft. Hilfreiche Hinweise der Professoren Anton Egger, Wirtschaftsuniversitat Wien, und Peter Swoboda, Universitat Graz, wurden eingearbeitet. Diesen bei den sowie allen In- terviewpartnern gebuhrt der besondere Dank der Autoren, die jedoch die Verantwortung fur allfallige Fehler, von denen sie hoffen, alle ausgemerzt zu haben, gemeinsam tragen.
