This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed conference
proceedings of the 6th International Symposium on Biomedical
Simulation (ISBMS) which was held in Strasbourg, France, in October
2014. Biomedical modeling and simulation are at the center stage of
worldwide efforts to understand and replicate the behavior and
function of the human organism. Large scale initiatives such as the
Physiome Project, Virtual Physiological Human and Blue Brain
Project aim to develop advanced computational models that will
facilitate the understanding of the integrative function of cells,
organs, and organisms, with the ultimate goal of delivering truly
personalized medicine. At the same time, progress in modeling,
numerical techniques and haptics has enabled more complex and
interactive simulations. The 27 revised full papers (including 16
regular and 11 short papers) were carefully selected from 45
submissions and cover topics such as training systems and haptics,
physics-based registration, vascular modeling and simulation, image
and simulation, modeling, surgical planning, analysis,
characterization and validation.
To celebrate its 5th edition, the International Symposium on
Biomedical S- ulation (ISBMS) was organized in conjunction with the
International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare (IMSH). IMSH is
the premier simulation in heal- care meeting and largestsingle
gathering of clinicians, educators, administrators and other
simulation stakeholders. This unique link-up aimed at bringing -
gether simulation users with those involved in its scienti?c and
technological developments in order to foster closer interaction.
The joint meeting was held in Phoenix, Arizona during January
23-24, 2010. Biomedical modeling and simulation are at the center
stage of worldwide e?orts to understand and replicate the behavior
and function of the human organism. The Physiome Project and
Virtual Physiological Human (VPH) i- tiative aim to develop
advanced computational models that will facilitate the
understanding of the integrative function of cells, organs, and
organisms, with the ultimate goal of delivering truly personalized
medicine. At the same time, progressinreal-timebiomedicalmodeling
andsimulationhasenabledmorec- plex, interactive simulations,
o?ering the possibility of highly sophisticated task trainers,
proceduralandpatientsimulatorsto supportmedicaltrainingandsafer
clinical practice. It is in this contextthat ISBMS seeks to act as
an international forum for researchers in this increasingly
important area to share their latest work, discuss future trends
and forge new collaboration

This book contains the written contributions to the International
Symposium on th Medical Simulation (ISMS'04) held in Cambridge,
Massachusetts, USA on June 17 th and June 18 , 2004. Manuscripts
are organized around five thematic sections relating to the
multidisciplinary field of Medical Simulation: Soft Tissue
Properties and Modeling, Haptic Rendering, Real-Time Deformable
Models, Anatomical Modeling, and Development Frameworks. The
objectives of the symposium are to gather researchers to present
their most recent, and promising work, to highlight research trends
and foster dialogue and debates among participants. Live
demonstrations are also included at the meeting, but cannot be
included in this volume. Finally, to address questions about areas
for improvement and future directions of the field, we organized a
panel of experts including technical, medical and educational
representatives. This event continues the successful symposium
organized by Herve Delingette and Nicholas Ayache, in France in
June 2003. At that meeting we agreed that it would be beneficial
for the community to have an annual gathering for the medical
simulation community where researchers can exchange ideas and share
their work in this emerging field. ISMS'04 is co-organized by CIMIT
/ Harvard Medical School and Rutgers University.
