Who says facts can't be fun? This book was written for those who
are of a conservative mind set but are still wandering aimlessly in
the world of politics and do not have a clue as to the policies,
missions and distinct differences between the Democratic and
Republican parties. Infusing sarcastic political satire into the
fray, the author has created a manifesto which is quite humorous
yet extremely informative. An absolute must for those who have
their hearts in the right place but have the political I.Q. of a
toaster!
Murray Schafer is one of Canada's few composers to have achieved an
international reputation. His innovative and often controversial
work extends beyond music into the areas of education, literary
scholarship, journalism, theatre, and graphics, as well as a new
field of his own making-environmental sound research. This
comprehensive critical survey of his life and works reveals the
unifying pattern within an amazingly productive and varied career.
Adams examines Schafer's extensive writings, which form the
intellectual context of his music. Though Schafer is both
avant-gardist and self-confessed romantic, his writings solve this
apparent paradox and show, as well, the central position of the
'soundscape' in his thought. Adam traces the development of
Schafer's music from his early works in a mild neo-classical vein
to his experimentation with various modernist procedures-serialism,
electronic sound, stereophony, graphic notations, and elements of
chance-all of which he fused together in his first stage of work or
'audio-visual poem,' Loving, in 1965. This volume includes a full
bibliography, discography, and catalogue of his works.
This volume chronicles the 16th Annual Conference on System
Engineering Research (CSER) held on May 8-9, 2018 at the University
of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia, USA. The CSER offers
researchers in academia, industry, and government a common forum to
present, discuss, and influence systems engineering research. It
provides access to forward-looking research from across the globe,
by renowned academicians as well as perspectives from senior
industry and government representatives. Co-founded by the
University of Southern California and Stevens Institute of
Technology in 2003, CSER has become the preeminent event for
researchers in systems engineering across the globe. Topics include
though are not limited to the following: Systems in context: *
Formative methods: requirements * Integration, deployment,
assurance * Human Factors * Safety and Security Decisions/ Control
& Design; Systems Modeling: * Optimization, Multiple
Objectives, Synthesis * Risk and resiliency * Collaborative
autonomy * Coordination and distributed decision-making Prediction:
* Prescriptive modeling; state estimation * Stochastic
approximation, stochastic optimization and control Integrative Data
engineering: * Sensor Management * Design of Experiments
This completely revised and expanded edition recognises the growing
importance of patent systems and documentation from Asia, South
America and Africa. The most prominent patent systems from these
regions are treated individually, together with revisions to
existing country coverage and an overview of IP developments in
general. This is an essential reference tool for librarians,
information specialists, data analysts and others seeking to use
patent information either at the document level or in bulk.
Arguing that the accomplishments of Jamaican activist Marcus Garvey
and his followers have been marginalized in narratives of the black
freedom struggle, this volume draws on decades of overlooked
research to reveal the profound impact of Garvey's post-World War I
black nationalist philosophy around the world and across the
twentieth century. These essays examine the influence of Garvey's
Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) in Africa,
Australia, North America, and the Caribbean. They highlight the
poorly recognized work of many Garveyite women and show how the
UNIA played a key role in shaping labor unions, political
organizations, churches, and schools. They also trace the imprint
of the movement on long-term developments such as decolonization in
Africa and the Caribbean, the civil rights and Black Power
movements in the United States, and the radical pan-African
movement. Rejecting the idea that Garveyism was a brief and
misguided phenomenon, this volume exposes its scope, significance,
and endurance. Together, contributors assert that Garvey initiated
the most important mass movement in the history of the African
diaspora, and they urge readers to rethink the emergence of modern
black politics with Garveyism at the center.
Since the publication of the 2nd edition additional countries
especially in Asia have become more prominent in industry. This
completely revised edition takes account of the changing
information scene e.g. in new chapters like BRIC nations (Brazil,
Russia, India, and China), Asia and regional patent systems or
Sources for legal status searching. This is an essential reference
tool for academic librarians and information specialists as well as
anyone needing to know where and how patent information can be
found.
The French Revolution had a marked impact on the ways in which
citizens saw the newly liberated spaces in which they now lived.
Painting, gardening, cinematic displays of landscape, travel
guides, public festivals, and tales of space flight and
devilabduction each shaped citizens' understanding of space.
Through an exploration of landscape painting over some 40 years,
Steven Adams examines the work of artists, critics and contemporary
observers who have largely escaped art historical attention to show
the importance of landscape as a means of crystallising national
identity in a period of unprecedented political and social change.
