Seeking to recover the sense of form criticism as understood by Gunkel, Reid compares three historical apocalypses of the second century BCE found in the books of Enoch and Daniel and inquires into their sociological setting. Reids investigation indicates that not only was Judaism of that period heterogeneous, but that even within Jewish apocalypticism there were different responses to the existing political and religious environment. An earlier version of this study was submitted as a doctoral dissertation at Emory University, written under the direction of Professor Gene M. Tucker.

This collection of essays is written by biblical scholars from around the world who are friends and students of the distinguished American biblical scholar Gene M. Tucker, who was President of the Society of Biblical Literature in 1996. His scholarly interest has been wide-ranging, from a passion to understand the biblical prophets to enduring probing of the theology that gave rise to the Hebrew Bible, and this book embodies these wide-ranging interests. Each essay probes the issues of prophetic studies and the theology of the Hebrew Bible. The essays include an examination of the role of W.F. Albright as a prophetic figure in the history of biblical studies and an examination of the superscriptions in the book of the Twelve.

The essays in "Psalms and Practice" explore how the notion of practice helps contemporary readers understand psalms in a new way. Practice, according to the authors, happens as faith seeks understanding through spiritual disciplines. These practices continue the work of the Holy Spirit - faith seeking understanding, understanding seeking embodiment through practice, and practice nurturing faith.

Practice and the psalms are never far from the formation of the soul which takes place in a number of ways. The essays in "Psalms and Practice" look at three aspects of formation: prayer, how the psalms shape our faith through the process of liturgy, and how the psalms shape the preached word.

Formation then occurs in contemplation, liturgy, and preaching, but it occurs in other action as well. "Psalms and Practice" also explores those elements of practice and the psalms by looking at the practice of translation as a way of practicing the psalms and examining other ways to relate the psalms to our modern lives.

"Psalms and Practice" is the result of conversations of scholars, who are also committed church people, at work in the field of Psalms research. These scholars came together for three days to share their papers and a time of prayer in both Protestant and Roman Catholic traditions. The participants noted that the combination of conversation on the psalms and the practice of reading and praying the psalms in worship enriched the conversation of reading the psalms in the discussion of the papers.

Stephen Breck Reid maintains that every reader of the biblical text views it through the lens of other contexts. That is to say, communal narratives, cultural myths and stories, and the reader's own experiences, influence what we bring to, and take away from, Scripture. Focusing on the Psalms--specifically what the Psalter has to say about what it means to be human--Reid demonstrates that many inadequate and harmful assumptions about the text, especially those drawn from the dominant culture, can be offset by readings from African American and Latino perspectives. Thus Reid draws on recent historical, critical, literary, and rhetorical scholarship of the Psalter, combined with an imaginative reading of African American, Latino, and other non-dominant cultural materials, to provide a compelling glimpse of a multicultural reading of Scripture.
